I?m gearing up this year to finally have my own equipment to ice fish with my son and I need a fish finder as one of my last pieces of gear. I?ve used my neighbors older Vexilar FL-8/10 ans it?s a very simple, accurate and dependable machine. The other option is the newer style of fish finders that use a flat screen such as Garmin and Hummingbird. These modern units can also be used in a boat or kayak in the summer unlike the Vexilar which is specific to ice fishing only. The models I?m interested in are the Vexilar FL -30BB Ultra Pack ($819) and the Hummingbird Helix 7 w/side and down imaging ($719). I like the tech of the Hummingbird but I?m not sure on its long term reliability unlike the Vexilar. Thanks.
