Serious question. Have you noticed an uptick in male and female Karen?s?
I had a guy insist I put away my phone at the gas station because it made him uncomfortable to be around me (10 feet away) because static could cause doom!!!! I laughed and continued on the same as before to which he called me a name.
Seriously I have never encountered that level of superstition fueled fear before.

I think the issue is inattention. So many times I see erratic driving on the interstate and the driver is engaged in cell phone use. Modern cell phones are fairly safe around gasoline fumes. The old landline phones had a electromechanical system with coils and bells. Hope I don't sound like Karen.

I bet Mr Static has a head full of knowledge, a regular genius.
Deranged people are always trying that 'wag the dog' nonsense. I spent some time in a big city, it's everywhere in the cities.

Back in the day you didn?t get as many Karens because butting into someone else?s business could lead to being punched in the face.

Now that we live in such a litigious society they are catching on that butting in where they aren?t needed or wanted won?t result in a weeks worth of eating soft foods so they are becoming more brazen.

Sounds less like a 'Karen' and more like a Californian.

Californians are afraid of everything. Karens are angr more than afraid, and would have asked the gas station manager to have you banned for life.

I'm starting to think there's been a major drop in average IQ and it shows as being a Karen.

Seriously. For example, the number of people wandering around the grocery store who truly look like they have no idea why they are there or what they are looking for is astonishing. They look like zombies. They are lost and confused. I see confused people everywhere these days. There weren't this many confused people before. Not sure what changed, but it's obvious.

I hire people, young people, who have the lowest energy level I've ever seen. Like sleep walkers. We have bar code scanners that are nothing more than Android phones with a trigger and laser that confuse the shit out of them. My 4 year old could use them. They all quit within a week.

People have gotten VERY strange these last few years...

Perhaps consider paying them a little more?

People will put up with all kinds of crap in the workplace if you pay them enough.

I cannot believe the amount of people willing to flip you off, tailgate you or call you names in this country of ours...
I mean, every day you read of someone getting shot over bullshit like this.
Are people really this stupid as to risk things spiraling over nothing?

Of course not.
Additionally the man continued to pump his gas in silence within my blast radius. (Sarcasm)

Well he was silent after I suggested he perform lewd act upon himself. But in all fairness I did suggest he not go picking fights with strangers. [emoji23]

I wonder if the man knows that the phone is still on and functioning even when you are not actively "using" it. Kind how that whole built in GPS thing works... or why your can answer the phone when it rings...or email refreshing... or receiving texts..

But you could have told him one way to keep the dangers of sparking from happening is to shield in a dissipative material such as a bung hole. SO if he would be so considerate as to drop his pants, bend over, and you will shove it up his bung hole while you pump gas... everyone will be safer....

Karens always ask to see the manager.

Is the freedom to go about one?s business unmolested that important? Yes, absolutely.

eddiememphis

You consider that molestation?

Every gas station in the country has signs saying do not use your phone while pumping fuel.

Some hall monitor points that out and you equate that with molestation?

I question who the Karen actually is.

I agree with both sides of this scenario.
1. To the hall monitor tool bag - Mind your own business and stop being a drama queen.
2. To the OP - you were breaking a well established rule for pumping gas and were in the wrong. Plain and simple.

He probably exceeded the posted speed limit going to or from the gas station as well.

I fell like there is less Karens out there lately. Maybe it's cause your Boulder adjacent Erni. I live around all the self entitled, tactical-cowboy blowhards in Douglas county. I should have opened a Grunt Style-Yellowstone Cowboy clothing and sticker store.

I cannot believe the amount of people willing to flip you off, tailgate you or call you names in this country of ours...It's bonkers out there. I had a crazy road-raging tailgater yesterday while I was in the far right lane on a 4 lane highway while I was doing 65. WTF...

The reason, IMHO, for the no-cell-phone at the gas pump is the distraction it causes with resulting gasoline spillage. The odds of a cell-phone battery fire are so small that it's forgettable.

When smoking was more prevalent, it was common to see people smoking cigarettes while pumping gas and no one complained.

No judgement here. I think a male 'Karen' is referred to as a 'Ken', per Yahoo. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/male-version-karen-220326163.html

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw a sign at a gas station saying you can't use your phone.. I'm going to have to look and see if they are still around, I know they existed in the past. As far as cell phones go they are all sealed and can't spark an explosion.

Just because they post a sign doesn?t mean it is correct. Even the American Petroleum Institute doesn?t consider this a danger. Much more dangerous is sitting in you car while filling in cold weather and then getting out to stop the pump. All our high tech fabrics generate more static energy than a phone. I don?t typically like USA Today but this article appears accurate. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/06/16/phone-gas-station-explosion/7490115001/

I was at a Kum N Go and a private street sweeper was at a pump, the kind that does small parking lots. After the guy pumped the gas, he turned the motor and it started/died. He hops out, goes to the battery tray and swats at a terminal with a lead, spark spark and the motor turns. Old guy, pit stained shirt, my new hero.

Seriously though Ray nailed it pretty well. Most “adults” now days have never tasted their own blood because their brain wrote a check their ass couldn’t cash.
Amazing how much you learn about respecting others when you get that taste and your eyes water really bad.
Add the fact that ever since social media became a thing EVERYBODY thinks they have to voice their opinion and be heard.

An old saying that fell by the wayside and needs to be reintroduced-
“Mind your own goddamn business, nobody gives a fuck what you think, shut the fuck up and go away before you taste your own blood.”

I keep my phone in the truck when I pump fuel.

Not because I am frightened by the prospect of immolation.

Having a phone in my ear and a watch on my wrist is a great invitation to get a brick in my head.

The less attention I draw to myself, the greater the chances of making it home intact.

This begs a practical question.

If CCWer was a accosted while pumping gas and in fear of their lives..

Should they worry about the flame from the cartridge being fired igniting the gas station? If so probably too risky to carry a gun around a gas pump.

Wait. What happens with an accidental discharge around a gas pump?

Probably safest to no have a gun around a gas pump…

Watched my dad smoke countless cigarettes while pumping gas. He was one of those real good smokers though. He could smoke while riding motorcycle, hanging off of heavy construction equipment while working on it, or in a rain storm.

Too bad he blew himself up....

Been away for almost a week and trying to catch up. So far in this thread this response is a total WINNER. As Ray said, when there are no consequences for sticking your nose in other peoples business, the Karen's come out like flies at a picnic.

Then again, Bert used to post some wonderful responses he's had with Karens and I haven't seen any of those in a while (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you missed some golden responses by Bert aka BPTactical).

ETA:

This is what I was talking about right here. Nothing but love for Bert!
