View Full Version : Getting the most of my suppressor...Kali Key?

I recently got my can, an Optimus 9.
One of the main purposes was to shoot 300 BLK subs out of a 10.5" pistol.
However, it's still a little louder than I would like.
My understanding is that a bolt action would cut down the signature quite a lot, but finding one that is under $500 is proving challenging.
Enter the Kali Key:
It's a sad contraction for the California market that replaces the gas key, neutering the gas system so that your AR turns effectively into a bolt action.
Factoring a dedicated bolt we are looking at about $200.
For those more experienced with suppressors that I am, how much of a difference can I actually expect it to make?
Is a 300 BLK "bolt action" really that much quieter than a semi when shooting suppressed?

You would be surprised how loud the action is on an AR, 112-120 db by itself. There is several videos online dedicated 300 blk bolt guns and a 30 cal suppressor and sub sonic 300 blk. This is my favorite................. (though the can they use has a wipe so it sounds like it is quiet fart)

Also alot of what your hearing is your buffer system as well as the bolt cycling and going back into lockup. What buffer system do you have? And as stated above, anything with a wipe will be significantly quieter, however the wipes themselves are a nfa controlled item(which is a sick joke in itself, disband the atf!)
I installed a jp scs into one of my Ars and it did make it noticeably quieter, thats not the entire reason they are made but a good secondary effect.
But about 10 times outta 10, yes a bolt gun will be significantly quieter then a semi gas gun while both are running suppressed. because you also cut out all of the port pop with a bolt gun, run a can with a wipe and the colest thing is after you fire and then cycle the action, you get the "hiss" of the remaining trapped gas in the system bleeding out when you cycle the gun.
Why not just use an adjustable gas block and crank it down?
Put a switchblock (has a closed position) on your 300BO. If you work on the tune, you can have closed, subs and supers and get the most out of the 300 BO pistol without getting another gun. But a new gun is always a good idea.

Well, thank you for the suggestions, but my handguard is quite long [Coffee] and covers the gas block, muzzle and part of the suppressor, so adjusting the block would require removal of the handguard.
It just sounds way simpler to just switch bolt and charging handle.

IMO If you really want to optimize the 300 with a suppressor. Buy a bolt action, or go with the kali-key on the lower cost, investment end.

Well, I did get the Kali-Key.
Got me the bundle with the BCG.
It does work as intended, but, for noise purposes, not so much.
Whatever noise it eliminates from the action seems to make up for from the ejection port gas venting.
I am starting to wonder whether the .357 front cap is part of the issue, or maybe I just need to put the can on an actual bolt action with a 16" barrel.

Yeah your end CAP can make a difference on a CAN. I found out using my hybrid with .46 cap on an AR is louder than other 30 call CANs on a 5.56 but once I put on the 30 cap it quiets down. If I can find the 5.56 end cap for the Hybrid I bet it would be quieter.
shooting a caliber specific CAN you can tell does help with the sound and tone.
AN example is; My dedicate 5.56 CAN Turbo T2 on an AR is much quieter tone and sounding than for sticking my SANDMAN S on an AR and it is essentially the same length and amount of baffles. I grabbed the 5.56 end cap of the sandman and it quiets down a little. 3-4 db but typically the human ear cannot distinguish that small change.
If you have the Kali key the bolt is not moving but maybe you are getting noise and gas back through the gas tube anyway?

Yeah, you definitely get that gas exiting from the ejection port, the key diverts the flow, does not plug the gas tube.
I held my hand to it and it is not a violent blast, more of a puffy fart, but the sound is there and i can definitely hear it more on the right side than on the left
