So I have been thinking of being a non-productive citizen and getting a new console to replace my ancient PSII. I have been too busy doing other things to care about the newer consoles that have come out in the last few years.
which one should I get and why? I'm into shootem up type games. WWII and such. Not into sports other than hunting and to play that on TV is gay.
in my opinion, 360 > PS3.
more and better games.
but if you want to get a blueray you might as well get a PS3.

I have a 360 and I like it so much more than my buddy's PS3, with the only advantage being the BR Player.
For shooters I would recommend PS3. IMHO better than XBox 360. Also too many XBox 360 console's die and you have to send them in, they send you someone elses refurbished. Wii cool, but more if your into sports games. All this coming from an old time PC gamer who mostly plays tactical shooters, BF2, COD etc. [Beer]

Also, since I've been out of the loop for a while, are these things about to be replaced in the near future with the next gen of even better consoles? I would hate to buy one of these things in the next few days and hear that PS4 or say XBOX 720 is coming out next month.
ETA: I don't subscribe to any gamer mag so I am clueless about these things.

Both platforms x360 and PS3 are several years old. There is a lot of speculation when next gen boxes come out but have not seen any launch dates. Probably will be at least a year out. My opinion only.
You have to pay $50 a year to play Xbox Live (online) and it is free for PS3.
Start by asking your friends which system they have, some times I hear people saying that they have such and such system, but all of their friends have the other one.
I have a Wii so I can't join in on this conversation.

What Irving, er, Stuart said about the cost of Xbox Live is true and I don't have any experience with the PS3, but my 17yo son is constantly on his 360 in the living room where I sit and surf on my laptop. He loves the first person shooter games and the ones he has are amazing.
The 360, being a Microsoft product, can also link up to your computer and play images, movies, etc from your computer through the 360 on your T.V. (may require Media Center or Windows 7 on the P.C.).
BUT, the PS3 will play BluRay discs, and I think it comes with Wi-Fi capability straight out-of-the-box. Of course, I'm not buying into the whole BluRay thing (yet) so this feature has had little sway with me.

I'm with Irving on this one - I have a Wii. If I was to get another (not likely) it would almost certainly be a PS3.

BluRay is sweet, put a good war movie on your HD set with your surround sound system going! I should admit I am biased as I weighed 360 vs PS3 and went with PS3. 360s are cool too, and I like Wii for the fun factor.
I'm IT savvy but know nothing relative to gaming systems. Always hated that crap and with the little casual time I'm able to carve-out I much prefer to be livin' real life (on my mountain bike, cruisin' powder, running, under a squat rack or at a range), but...
I've had a Wii in my household for all of three weeks now and damn...this thing is pretty cool/fun FWIW (it was a birthday gift). The visual experience is rather childish in my opinion but at least it has you physically engaged to an extent. Bought some add-on fitness hardware (Wii Fit Plus pad, etc,), workout software packages and a few misc. games and I have to admit, I like this thing. I presume the more realistic systems are better for the true gamers but I'll never spend the time to find out.
I bowled a 246 the other night...I'm a stud! [Weight]
Now all I need is to find some shooting games.
I went PS3 over a year ago and really like it. Its wifi ready, blue ray player, plays older playstation games also. You can also hook it up to the netflix on demand movies (if you subscribe) but you have to put in a disc they send you everytime before you start the download of a movie. You can put up pics and crap like that also. My kids and I have a great time with it (more so me than them).
NINTENDO FTW,,,, Oh, I guess you want something a little more recent.....[Dunno]
I have both, and my 360 is much better as far as games go. I picked the ps3 for blu-ray and now that I have a quality player I don't even use it for that much as I put it in my bedroom if I wanted to watch a br in bed (HD in bedroom pwns - w00t!). The games on the 360 are so much better and visual quality is on par when used with an hdmi cable. The blu-ray feature on my ps3 isn't the greatest compared to outer players.
Marlin, you can down load pretty much all of the original Atari and NES games, you can also download an increasing number of Super Nintendo, Sega, Nintendo 64, and even Nintendo Gamecube games on the Wii.

360, better games and graphics. If you are worried about $50 for a years worth of internet access with the 360, then why are you looking at gaming systems?
Then
Wii, serious fun gaming but different enough you can't really compare to the rest of the systems out there
then
Blue Ray player.
no PS3 required.
I have a 15 year old step-daughter, a 13 year old step-son, and a 6 year old son. We have the following game systems: 360, Wii, PS2, two DS's, a PSP, and a Gamecube... Ya, I got game.

Have a PS3, Wii, and DS. Got the PS3 because the controller is the same as PS2, no online gaming fees, and the Blue Ray. Wife won't let me play her DS and the Wii sits till the kids are old enough to play it. Any MW2 fans want to mix it up add frank_da_tankk.
I've experienced a hell of a lot more problems gaming on the ps3 network than I have on xbl bad company and cod: mw were the games I've tried on both. I guess you get what you pay for.

I'm drunk right now, so you will have to show me this stuff somehow. I want to get some N64 games...we just got a Wii for chirstmas
I've played them all, have a Wii currently, like the Xbox but will be getting a PS3 instead.
also have PSP PS2 and a blackjack poker game for playing on the toilet.[ROFL2]
Get a gaming computer... You can custimize it so you can have the Blu-ray (PS3) and you won't have to pay for online gaming (Xbox LIVE), way better graphics than other consoles (Wii), plus it'll have more uses than just "gaming"... AND, you can also download a lot of the older games cross-platform on a computer... my two cents.
BTW, I'm a BF2 gamer as well to whomever mentioned that, lol. Need a pilot, hit me up! HAHA.

Well.....for its intended purpose of wasting time..... yes. I vowed to myself that I would not become one with the couch on a regular basis.
