I call it shopping around. The forums are a good place to look.

Is it accurate?

Anyone used another 'blue book' type thingy?

The "Blue Book of Gun Values" is the reference book most dealers use to get an initial idea of the value of a gun. It's very similar to the KBB or NADA Blue Book for cars.

However, it's just a guide. Economic conditions, geographic area, time of year, etc...will all affect the value of a gun (in addition to the gun make/model and the condition of the gun, of course).

The other guys are right...you can look at some online resources to get a better idea of the actual selling prices of a particular gun. A guns value and it's actual selling price are oftentimes miles apart.

just look on gunbroker and do a search and you will find a rough estimate on what a gun is worth or a relative value or asking price.

Tom,
When using a place like GunBroker to value your firearms, do not pay attention to what they are "listed" for, to get your value. Some of those overpriced auctions have been re-listed for years.

If you want a "real time" value.

First click on "Use Version 2" in the top right corner.

Then go to the "Smart Search" and type in your firearm, then check the box next to "Exclude Reserve Price items" then click the down arrow in the box "Show Only" and select "Completed Auctions" (you have to be registered, and may have to do this 3 or 4 times for it to show the completed auctions)

Now you are ready to search. Once the page is up, look ONLY for auctions that have a bid. There is what the firearm actually sold for. A "real time" value of what buyers are willing to pay.

**********

I can not find a way to search for "completed auctions" in Version 4, hope to get that resolved soon. And, there are auctions that have a reserve, that sell at a good price, but cutting the reserve auctions out REALLY speeds up YOUR search for a value. If there are not many of your firearms listed, you may want to look at the reserve auctions, but then you have to open the auction to see if it actually sold for the bid price. Pain in the butt. Good luck.

Blue book is good, but don't ever forget the value is ultimately what someone is willing to pay for it. Although a gun might be worth $x, if nobody is willing to fork out a price around blue book...

I see this mistake a lot on the web.
