I had surgery last Tuesday and am currently tapering-off on my valid hydrocodone prescription.
Not driving (collar bone repair), but would still like to carry when out and about this evening- GO or NO GO?
Here's the book answer:
Hydrocodone is a controlled substance according to 18-18-102 (5) - as best I can tell since that section goes on and on...
18-12-106. Prohibited use of weapons - definitions.
(1) A person commits a class 1 misdemeanor if:
(d) The person has in his or her possession a firearm while the person is under the influence of intoxicating liquor or of a controlled substance, as defined in section 18-18-102 (5).
Possession of a permit issued under section 18-12-105.1, as it existed prior to its repeal, or possession of a permit or a temporary emergency permit issued pursuant to part 2 of this article is no defense to a violation of this subsection (1).

Sounds like the government is working hard keeping society safe from people with an arm in a sling taking 5mg of hydrocodone every 6 hours.
Too bad the perps don't have to follow ANY rules...

The key there is "under the influence".

No go. Can't drive? Why? Apply the same logic to CCW.

Can't drive because it might be difficult to manage a wheel when a large part of his shoulder function is fucked, not because he's smashed

Are you likely to behave under the influence? It would have to be proven beyond doubt. The risk of conflict and discovery seems slim. And if it were to happen, wouldn't it be better to be found guilty by 12 (of a misdemeanor!) than to be carried by six? Only you can decide if it's worth the risk of losing your permit.

This is America. We have only the infringements we consent to. Free Men do need not permission. If you are Female, ask your Husband or Father for advice.

To echo what others have said. Under the influence is the issue. In reality even being on OTC cold medicine, one can receive a DWI. Due to the DISCLAIMER : CAUTION MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS .
I would go in to a detailed discussion on the subject. BUT since the forum is now viewable to the public. eh.
Irrespective of the legalities involved, could you actually effectively draw and fire?
I had half of my collarbone removed last year and the mere act of drawing/firing was severely hampered for many many months after the fancy Rx meds wore off.

Weird that multiple posts since Dec 4th on this thread have vaporized. In answer to the above, I have transitioned back to strong-side carry and can effectively draw and fire lightweight platforms with minimal to moderate recoil, like my .22 317 snub.

Glad it's worked out, I'm envious.

I started weak-side carry as soon as possible after the accident, but was very happy last weekend when I was flexible and strong enough to re-engage with strong-side practice. Still can't lift a "duty" gun effectively with an extended arm, but I will take what I can get- a cylinder dump of eight .22 LR is better than "please don't hurt me".

Why do you need to carry this evening? Are you going to a dangerous area? I doubt it with a broken collar bone. What about just using common sense. I think you would probably just go out to dinner, maybe have a drink or so with your friends or family and come home. Nothing too wild and crazy. It is my belief that you would be able to handle yourself and your compadres safely and without incident.
I don?t know you, we haven?t met before, but reading into your post I am not sure why you would even ask this question. I don?t want to start a dumb Internet fight. That is not my intention at all. But can you go out for an evening without strapping up? I love guns I have tons of guns but I don?t need to go out packing every single moment.
Gun safety is and should be paramount to all that carry and use firearms. We know that as a forum and individuals. Would you be safe on opioids and pulling your weapon. Is there a possibility your judgment would be off and a horrible accident might incur? I think innately you knew the answer to your question before you posted or you would not have asked for validation.
I understand the argument, what if some Jack wagon starts acting the fool and you need to be armed for your safety. I get it but the bigger question is for a responsible gun owner, what?s the safest thing for the 99.9% of the people.
Im am sure this is moot because the event is passed. But, food for thought, if you did carry when you went out, was it the wisest move?

I?m not picking a fight with you and I?m someone who chooses not to carry a lot of the time and tries to rely on smart choices and decisions to keep me safe.
That being said, are there really places to go where there aren?t risks these days? I bet there are people in Boulder who thought buying groceries at King Soopers during normal daylight hours was a perfectly safe thing to do.
Although I make my own decisions about when and where I carry, I can?t fault anyone for carrying anywhere or any time these days. You just never know when that place or activity that should be perfectly safe is going to turn into a shit show in the blink of an eye.

No fight at all Brother. I agree with you, we could go from zero to defcon 10 in a blink of an eye. Anytime or anyplace. We have rights to carry. I guess my point was to emphasize good, common sense descision making. As some one who has been shooting and around firearms for 53 years, safety is a no discussion, no interperation, non flexible topic that can NEVER be taken for granted, even by shooters that "know everything". Myself included.
I had a friend shot because of poor gun safety and I would never want that to happen to any of our forum brothers or the general public. So the question was is it ok to handle firearms while on narcotics. In my opinion, just one guys opinion, that answer would be no. Just like if one had a bunch of drinks, smoked some weed or ate my wifes cooking, they would be impaired. Johnny Cash sings, "my Momma told me not to play with guns" Good thing my wife never joins us on the forum or she might start shooting.
Just thoughts, not trying to tell someone what to do. Unless it endangers others.
