https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/us/power-outage-moore-county-investigation-monday/index.html

"The mass outage in Moore County turned into a criminal investigation when responding utility crews found signs of potential vandalism of equipment at different sites ? including two substations that had been damaged by gunfire, according to the Moore County Sheriff?s Office.

...the sheriff on Sunday addressed rumors circulating on social media that the attack was an attempt to thwart a local drag show.
Fields said investigators ?have not been able to tie anything back to the drag show,? which was scheduled in the town of Southern Pines at 7 p.m. Saturday, around the time the power went out."

I think this shows the fragility of our power supply system.

It also shows how media outlets are quick to point the finger at anything that may be anti-gay.

There was an attack on a substation in California a few years ago that was never solved. Basically a team of shooters acted in a coordinated attack cutting communications/alarm lines and then shot up the sub station.

Metcalf Substation near San Jose, CA. Technically this did not cause much of an issue on the grid if I remember correctly.

Incident is fairly close to Fort Bragg. Wonder if AP rounds were used? Makes me think it might be an attempt to disrupt operations. Euro theater or just local vandals? I would't be surprised if utilities add cameras and various sensors to sub-stations soon.

Police and some locals are speculating, it was kids who wanted an extended snow day. Unfortunately everything in todays instant gratification 40/7media is domestic terrorism. Which usually when the truth comes out was nothing close. Like the still pushed.. hands up, don't shoot.

Back in the early 90s I worked in a screen printing shop for a guy that was a former "NRC Armed Responder" at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California in the mid 80s (he was also a former AP). Basically he patrolled the grounds with an M16 keeping an eye on things.

He said he routinely found holes cut in the fences surrounding the reactor building and every time he reported them he was ignored by both the security and the maintenance people.

Our power grid has been vulnerable for decades. I'm honestly surprised we haven't had a serious "grid down" event by now.

...Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California...
Trivia: I was going to Cal Poly while that was being built. Know the guy that planned the rotation of the nuclear fuel for startup and steady state.

I would like to know the details. What equipment was shot and how precisely? What weapon was used? Was it just random shooting "spray and pray" that happened to hit something important, or is it someone with knowledge of the sensitive, high impact, non replaceable equipment?
In other words, how much knowledge and skill would it have taken to do this. Seems like those details will sort out the bad guys from the riff raff.

News articles have the sheriff saying that the shooter knew exactly what they were doing. Two dozen shots to take out power to a large area does not seem like someone who got bored of plinking stop signs.

Back in the 1980s, Loompanics used to sell sabotage manuals explaining how to damage power stations, railroads, even nuclear power plants. Many ecoterrorist groups have access to such information, as it's been reposted as pdfs on various fringe online forums.

Both of those books sucked.

IIRC, "William Powell" was a pseudonym of a Senator's son who hated subversives. Most of the information is utter horseshit, and the IED recipes will either fizzle out or blow up in your face.

PMJB is a little better, IIRC written by a leader of the "Minutemen Militia." Drawings look like they were made by a small child with a broken crayon. Most of the data is loosely based upon the Improvised Munitions Handbooks from Frankfort Arsenal, but will silly shit like making grenades from aspirin bottles covered with Bondo. lol

I've worked in telecom for 36 years, most of it as a travelling installer or a field tech. Had a bunch of remote sites that were small prefabbed concrete buildings with small stones cast into the external surfaces as decoration. Bullet pockmarks on the exterior walls were common. I was in one little sheetmetal hut in Wyoming once, if you turned the lights off the sunlight streaming in through all the bullet holes was impressive! How they didn't hit the electronic equipment inside is beyond me.

^^ To be fair, in Wyoming it might've been the wind blowing small rocks thru the concrete walls... If you've ever lived there you know what I mean.

Seven power substations attacked. North Carolina, Oregon and Washington.

FBI blames right wing extremists. Claims it is a protest against drag shows.

Those were probably bullet holes. In Wyoming, the wind picks up big rocks.

In Ore? doubt it. Copycats wanting to throw more towards the " extremist" Which if one reads in to what they say, deeper. It's anyone who's right of center, a gun owner, male heterosexual, registered as a R voter. for a start.

Hey, getting that freak freed represents a LOT of "D" votes! Money in the bank for the D's.

That former Marine that's been imprisoned there for 4 years? Yeah, he doesn't represent D votes. Yes, we want him home, but that won't win as many votes for the D's.

If it truly is a protest over Drag Queen story hour, they could have at least hit DSA Chapters. That at least would have made sense.

Most likely protest over electric vehicles. But that makes too much sense. Probably an act to commit other crimes. Made your baby cry...
