View Full Version : 2010 Rocky Mountain Steel Challenge, 28-29 May

Hoser
01-02-2010, 20:43
On 28-29 May Pikes Peak Practical Shooters will again host the Rocky Mountain Regional/Area 2 Steel Challenge.

Just like last year, the match can be shot on either day. Friday after noon-ish and all day Saturday. Shooting it all in one day is easy and many did exactly that last year.

Last year we gave away a lot of $$$ and a lot of guns.

People that shoot it again this year will save $10 off their match fee.

This year your match fee includes a match DVD.

Saturday shooters will get a lunch.

Multiple guns are allowed, but no more than two in one day.

I will get a PDF application out within a week.

We are going to have a max of 150 entries again this year. We sold out last year so get those apps in to me if you want in.

Well I guess thats a good thing.

Foot speed and splits wont/cant win this match. Steel is just a straight up shootin' contest.

Can XD's/XDm's compete in the IDPA/SSP division since this is Steel Challenge and not IDPA?

Sorry but no. Your gun and all your gear must be 100% IDPA Stock Service Pistol legal.

Your XD fits perfect in Limited Division. You will see many of them there. Steel Challenge isnt a capacity game so its not a big deal if your mags dont hold 20-22 rounds.

To prevent anything like what happened last year, please take the time to read through the IDPA rule book. Pay close attention to holster, belt and firearms modifications rules.

I was doing some searching around and came across this article. It's from Rob Leatham's website saying he used an XDm in the Production division at the 2009 World Steel Challenge Championship.

http://robleatham.com/blog/2009/08/18/rob-leatham-wins-production-division-at-the-2009-world-speed-shooting-championship-steel-challenge/

Is IDPA or USPSA the governing body of Steel Challenge or does it depend on who's holding the event? Because IDPA clearly says the XD is a single action gun and is in ESP but USPSA clearly states that the XD belongs in the Production division.

On a side note, what happened last year?

Last year IDPA and Production were combined. People were confused by this. They had Production legal gear with a IDPA-ESP legal guns. Thats a no-go. All or nothing. They simply assumed that the rules were the same.

USPSA "owns" the rights to Steel Challenge, but SC has their own rules. My offering of an IDPA division is my own doing and they are ok with that and have sanctioned the match as a regional tournament. One of about six in the US this year.

Just pick a division that fits your gun and gear then shoot the match and have fun…… I shot this match last year, double taping plates on some strings, shooting strong hand only or weak hand only on other strings trying all kinds of crazy stuff. I had a great time because I had fun with it. I knew I wouldn’t be in contention to win anything because I don’t shoot steel regularly so my main goal in attending the match was to support the match with my attendance and $$ then have some fun shooting with friends.

Lots of email confirmations were sent out earlier this morning.

Over 20 people already signed up already and 4 of them are Junior shooters. Very cool.

It filled up last year. Dont get left out.

Stay in one of the many places in Colorado Springs and car pool with the many shooters from that area. Lots of options of things to do in the CS area after the shoot.
Its about a forty minute drive from CS.
I'm shooting on Friday.

Theres a Ramada and a couple of other hotels on the north end of Pueblo, not much of a drive to the range from those. Restaurants close by as well.

Went through my pile o' apps tonight and we are about half full.

Get those apps in as I dont want to turn anyone away.

And again this year Smith And Wesson is the match sponsor. Last year they donated a bunch of guns for us to give away. The non-cash awards (like guns) are random so everyone has a chance to win something. If you want to win cash, start training last month.

Are the stages being set up Friday morning, and if so, do you need help with that?

I guess thats my fault. The correct address is steelchallenge2010 at juno.com Dont know how I missed that. Dumbass I guess.

We will be doing the final set up of stages Friday morning early. Come one come all. The sooner its set up the sooner we can shoot and get you on the road to start the long weekend.

Hoser
05-10-2010, 20:04
Update...

It is looking like we will again this year run with open squadding. In other words, you show up at the range, pick a group of friends, pick a stage, and start. No order to what stages you have to shoot. If you and your friends find an open stage, shoot it.

Like last year Friday will start anytime after 10:00 or so. No formal start time. We will start setting up around 7:00 or so. You are free to shoot anytime after 8:00 and we will be there till dark if needed. Last year two guys rolled in around 5:30 and shot all 8 stages in under an hour. Saturday however you need to be there by 7:30 for the shooters meeting so we can start at 8:00 and be done by 2:00.

Lunch will be provided Saturday, but Friday shooters are on their own for food. Friday shooters gain flexibility as far as the schedule goes, but dont get the free lunch.

I have had some questions come my way recently and I just wanted to see if I can
answer some of them before Friday or Saturday.

IDPA Stock Service Pistol Division seems to have to most questions associated with it.
Here is the deal. Your pistol, mags and all the mag pouches, holster and belt *must* be
100% IDPA SSP legal. That means the Springfield XD is out, 1911s are out, velcro under
belt are out, dropped offset holsters are out, loading more than 10 rounds in a mag is
out, ect, ect. Please do us all a favor and read the IDPA rulebook if you even think
there might be an issue with anything you are wearing. In addition to your equipment
being IDPA legal, you must also wear a concealment garment of some sort.

Just like last year we will start Friday as soon as we get set up and people are ready to
shoot. Last year we started shooting around 10:30. Saturday is a 0800 start for
everyone.

Lunch is provided Saturday.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

DocMedic

Not odd at all. The XD (HS 2000) is a single action pistol. SSP is for double action or safe action.

I'll show up to spectate, I don't think it's worth throwing $100 at a shooting competition when I've never seen one, let alone shot one. Maybe I'll bring my checkbook in case it didn't fill up. I have never practiced drawing from a holster to fire, either. It does look like my stock Glock 21 with grip-tape is SSP legal.

I just wanted to point out that the PPPS site, under Rocky Mountain Steel Challenge, currently says "no cover garment required". Now, it's absolutely not a problem to bring a vest and throw it in the bag...I'm just saying these little discrepancies may be one source of confusion.

Hoser
05-27-2010, 21:16
Not sure where you are seeing that, might be a leftover from 2009.

I have sent out several emails to all that have signed up for the match and hit all the forums telling people that a cover garment is required for the IDPA Division.

earplug
05-27-2010, 21:42
Then I would shoot IDPA.

Just having fun. I shot this match last year and I'm shooting it this year. Its a great place to shoot and Steel Shooting is very fine.
The Pueblo Wednesday matches are good for people who have never entered any pistol matches and want to try action type shooting.
