Ever since we first saw some custom laser engraved stuff for sale, my wife has been bugging me to get a laser engraver. Well, after Christmas, I finally got one, a Laser Pecker 1.0 Professional (hey, I didn't name the thing!)

It's a pretty cool device and unlike some other lasers, that use a table and move the laser around with belts and motors, this one moves the laser with mirrors so it's very small and low powered.

The one drawback is that the max size it can engrave is 92 mm (roughly three inches.)

Anyway, I've been playing with it since I got it, it can basically engrave anything that is in the form of a line drawing or can be converted to a line drawing. This is a small, about 2" diameter, piece of wood to show what it can do:

Now I did "overburn" this one a little bit, so I know I have to experiment with the settings.

But what I was wondering about was if anyone knows of a place that sells gun grip "blanks" or unfinished slabs of wood (either for revolvers or 1911-type semi autos.) I was thinking that it would be cool to custom engrave some grips.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a source, please let me know.

Bought it for the wife, huh?

Ebay and Amazon both have unfinished 1911 grips.

I have done business with this place. They have been very prompt. I think most of the other grips are available as unfinished. the grips I have bought fit excellently. Scroll down a ways to get to the unfinished grips.

Hmmm...might have to buy a 1911 just so I have something to make grips for.

Now I'm looking for unfinished smooth revolver grips....

Just wanted to share my latest. I got some blank leather key fobs from Etsy to practice on. Laser does a great job of etching leather, only drawback is the smell - like burning hair!

Put my jump wings on this one but got a little close to the edge:

I figured you jarheads would like this one:

I actually don't like the dark leather for this, I think this works better on a lighter leather so I'm going to get some of those next.

Still, I'm having fun with the laser etcher!
