What are the fair market values for a used S&W Model 29 (44 Mag) with 4" barrel and a Model 610 (10mm) with 5.5" barrel? Both are in excellent shape.
Would firing 44 Magnum cartridges out of a 4" Model 29 be too painful? My friend said he never fired the Model 29 more than a couple cylinders at a time. Or he just shoot 44 Special to enjoy the revolver more.
I don't know, but I bet that 29 would make a dandy carry piece in bear country!
Though I know jack about value, some more good questions is if the 29 is pinned and recessed and if the firing pin is on the hammer or in the frame.

I'm not a big fellow but I loved shooting the 4 inch model 29. I could easily handle 20-50 round sessions of hotter loads. I would sometimes carry it when hunting, camping and doing field work. I finally sold it because it was too darned heavy to carry on the hip.
Mine was a 29-2 with the pinned barrel, and it sold for ~1250, 7 or 8 years ago to a forum member.
The M-29 is easier to shoot with factory loads then a .357 J frame.
If you want to make a large basketball size ball of flame shoot some PMC 185 grain loads.
Value is dependent on which model number and condition.

Are they pre lock guns?
The 610 has a lock. The 29 is pre-lock.

This 29 has a pinned barrel as well.

On the 29: yes the barrel is pinned. The cylinder is recessed. Not sure where the firing pin is mounted on.

Since it’s pinned and recessed the firing pin is definitely on the hammer. That should be no later than a 29-2. Depending on condition and accessories value can be anywhere from $1000-$2000 also depending on the pocket depth of the buyer and how bad it’s wanted. Post up the first 3,4 letter/numbers of the serial to get help on the year shipped.
I have a 29-2 and 629-1 both 4”. Tons of fun to shoot with .44spl. I practice now and then magnum in the 629 as it’s my camp/hiking gun and that’s what it’s loaded with.
Not sure where the firing pin is mounted on.
As Doc45 mentioned, if the barrel is pinned, the firing pin is on the hammer. Cock the hammer and you'll see a pointy thingie on the front of the hammer. :)

Count the screws and hope for a #5

Those are good looking revolvers you have!
You convinced me, I decided to pick up both the 29 and 610. Thanks for all the info. Learned some interesting bits of info about the 29.
Thank you and congrats, good move to grab both! I might be able help date the 29 if you’re curious. Feel free to pm for more.
