Anyone ever order a McMillan stock directly?
I am thinking about ordering an A5 for a Savage build that I am working on. The only after market stocks I have used are the Choate.
So do the McMillans come drop in ready when you call them and tell the options you want or is there still work that needs to be done when it arrives at your door?
They do not come ready to bolt on an action to. They need to be glass bedded at the minimum and piller bedding is best.
So yes, they do require gunsmith intervention.
And, I would order a Manners over a McMillan any day of the week.

Mine came ready to drop in. No glass bedding. No gunsmith.
Still shots 1/2 MOA out to 600

What makes the Manners better than the McMillan?

The fact that Kelly McMillan is a total prick.

3 inch groups at 600? Thats cool. You should go shoot some matches and make some $$$.
So your only mitigating fact of Manners over McM stocks is you personally don't like a owner?
Have done matches ,no longer wish too, takes all the fun out of it.
Other things that make a rifle shot well is training of the shooter.
Barrel and action being trued, using proper ammo,a well tuned trigger.
Oh course a good barrel helps,as does a properly mounted scope.
Just because the rifle can hold 1/2 MOA doesn't mean I can shoot that ,all the time.
Reading the wind is a must, shadow on sights,mirage....
just guys are funny. 1/2 MOA who needs that. full auto and walk it in until you hear the cries! [ROFL1]
I have no opinion on either stocks as I don't own one, I like the looks of the McMillan but that is about the extent of my knowledge.
I am hoping to get a nice 300 Win Mag gun one day for long range. Not at the top of my list at the moment however.

Yup. There is more to it than that, but yes.
I own a mcmillan but can agree with Hoser (I dont know the owner of McMillan) but sometimes thats all it takes is a bad person in the business to steer me away excellent product or not. But I dont know him and I like my mcmillan (A4).[Tooth]

That would be enough for me too.
H-S precision is also another to watch out for.
search for them with Lon Horiuchi in the search field.
