I took my truck to the dealership for warranty work and decided to get an oil change, air filter and the fuel filters changed. I knew it was going to be expensive, but sometimes time is more important. A little over $700 for all. What got me irritated was a $75 "environmental fee" for disposing of the oil and filters. This was at a Phil Long dealership in Trinidad, working on a '19 Ram 3500 with a 6.7 cu94160mmins.

About a month ago, I changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter in my 2005 Ram 3500 for about $150 and 30 minutes of my time… all in.
Ouch.
I couldn’t afford half of what I have if a paid retail for everything.

Holy shit, 700$ thats straight robbery.
I keep a spreadsheet of how much money I save from not paying for gas and oil changes. It looks like I'm going to have to dramatically increase my cost of oil changes so the data aligns w/reality. I think I had $50 for an oil change. It seems as though this data is very outdated from this thread. I may double it.

You can’t buy your own oil and filter anymore for $50 bucks for most vehicles let alone pay someone to do it.

Environmental Fee’s
Just another means of fleecing the consumer out of their money.
Curious just where those fee’s end up.
Sorta like the Plastic bag fee- 10 cents per bag, out of which 6 cents goes to the local municipality and the remaining 4 cents goes to the retailer.
Just how is that saving the planet?

The three gallons of waste oil has to be dealt with according to EPA standards.
The dealer has to pay a company to collect the waste oil. That means a guy with a haz-mat endorsement on his CDL, driving a specialized rig to suck it out of the EPA approved container. The driver is likely making a decent wage and the waste oil company has all it's bills to pay as well, regarding transportation and disposal.
$75 is likely excessive but the shop is paying thousands of dollars to deal with the waste. Someone has to pay for it.

The waste oil is sent to the refinery. Same place they take the crude oil. Then we buy it again.

I've been out of the oil changin' game for 5 or 6 years now (thankfully) so my spreadsheet figures are obviously outdated. When I used to do it I would use mobile one motor oil that I'd get BOGO rebates on and factory filters from Kia and Toyota that were only a couple of bucks each. In all they were pretty reasonably priced using high quality materials.
Side note: even though my cost estimates for oil changes (and probably gas prices) are woefully below actual costs, we've still saved north of $16k on gas & oil changes alone driving EVs. That's a pretty high number and we were previously a very low gas consumption household since I work from home and my wife has only a short commute 4 days a week on average. It's not the perfect solution for everyone but it's been WAY better for us. Topics like this are but one example why.

10% for supplies and dumping of oils, not out of the ordinary. We were charging 5% back in the 80's & 90's for shop supplies. Which covered brake cleaner, shop rags, oil dry, oil & battery disposal. That sheet isn't cheap, wasn't too bad then. Forget about todays world, where everyone's under a microscope when it comes to climate and environmental oversight.
Right now it's running $38 for mobil 1 syn, filter and tax, with me doing services, maintenance, tires, brakes etc at home. The up side for me is. Have a lift, climate controlled shop and, i don't have a deadline when it needs to be off the lift, having 2 other vehicles as needed.

Get Mopar or Fleetguard filters at Genos Garage. The quickserve kits are $165 (order ahead of time.) Baldwin or Donaldson also acceptable. I'd avoid WIX, their micron spec is not as good as Fleetguard.

That's insane they charge $480 for an air, oil, fuel, and fuel/water filter.
It's tricky to get the oil filter out of the 19+ Ram, this and a gallon ziplock bag help if you're inclined to do your own.

You need a 28mm socket for the engine compartment fuel filter. https://www.genosgarage.com/product/ram-cummins-lisle-20mm-low-profile-fuel-filter-socket-13290/tools
You can make you're own no mess rear filter catch. https://hdrams.com/forum/index.php?threads/guaranteed-no-mess-rear-fuel-filter-removal-tool.12577/
Honestly, I just don't trust the dealer to do it right. Likely they put the wrong air filter in anyway. There's quite the debacle over using the correct filter. For all 19+ Cummins trucks it's 53034051AB and accept NO SUBSTITUTE.
https://hdrams.com/forum/index.php?threads/6-7-engine-air-filter-confusion.13140/
BTW, the 19+ Cummins cannot use 15W-40 oil due to hydraulic lifters. 10W-30 dino/blend or 5W-40 full synth. I run Rotella T6 5W-40 year round. 2020 3500 HO.

With a vast majority of the food containers made from plastic, it still astounds me this (paying for bags) is a thing.
Fukn politicians.

How does Jiffy Lube and other places manage to get by without charging a disposal fee then?

That cost is offset by the cost of the engines they have to replace..[Coffee]

Can't you get a synthetic oil change at Walmart for less than $75?
I had 180 gallons of waste oil picked up this morning. Cost me $50. We charge $5 per vehicle for waste fluid disposal, and make a little at the end of the month. If a dealership is charging 15 times that amount, that's profiteering.
I've taken waste oil to the local O'Reilly Auto Parts store for years... they just have me leave it on the counter and say thanks... no charge. Maybe I should tip them next time.

I often seem to hit mine when they're full up.
Huh. I keep my used oil and filter it for use with common fuel rail diesel engines. Off road use only of course.

I just left O'Reilly where I bought supplies for oil change on my commuter, $72 and I will have to dispose of used oil. It will either be in the shop oil furnace or my neighbor pours it over his recycled asphalt driveway.
If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

Same here. $700 is completely ridiculous. I just had my 30k service done to my 2018 Cummins Dually at Christopher Dodge world and I said no to $300 for oil; $700 is total BS so I did it myself. for the cost of three gallons of Rotella synthetic and a Napa gold filter. I dropped off the oil at the O'reillys here in Conifer. It's somewhat of a PITA because you have to go through the opening in the wheel liner to get to the oil filter, but definitely not worth the extra money to have it done.

Check out Phil Long's maintenance plus deal. I've used it for the last several years, I can't buy the oil and filter for my 6.7L PSD for that price. (279.95/4) And every Black Friday they knock $30 off the price. https://www.phillong.com/car-maintenance-package.htm

I did buy this package now. $70 for an oil change is much better. The question will be the fees, which would double the cost.

And if they can get you in...chances are you'll need to schedule it well in advance to get your preferred time/date.

I've never been charged a fee on top. The new 'books' are digital and attached to Phil Long's app. My long time service advisor at Chapel Hills told me nothing has changed. Scheduling has never been an issue, but expect that they will send your truck through Quicklane if the dealer has one.

Sorry to see that encorehunter, it's a shame they charged you an arm and a leg.
Did you get a discount because you were a finger short of a full arm?[Coffee]
*Sorry brother, I had to. I hope all is well.

I went to the bar a while back and ordered a Left Hand beer. The bartender only filled it 4/5s the way full, looked me in the eye and said "it doesn't look like you are used to a full one." The guys I was with all looked and asked, what was that about. None of them had realized I was missing a finger. She turned out to be a great bartender with a good sense of humor.

Wonder if it was for the fuel from the filters? I know on my duramax I was told 125-150 for my fuel filter. As it takes less than 10 minutes to swap out and the part at full retail shouldn?t be more than $50, I assume most of FHAs charge is in the hazmat fee for the fuel.
