I am a middle aged white guy so this phenomenon is way out of my wheelhouse. I don't think I have ever heard a Taylor Swift song- if I have I could not identify it.
I have trouble understanding pop culture in general.
Is something popular because it's good, or do people think it is good because it is popular? It is often a self perpetuating cycle that can grow or collapse without warning.
I have read that if you can ingrain your product with girls 8-12 (tweens) there are billions of dollars to be earned throughout their teen years.
It was on every television news channel yesterday- often as the lead story.
When she landed in her private jet at Centennial, there was a helicopter hovering over to catch a glimpse of her getting into an Escalade.
She is having two concerts, sold out at Mile High. Some tickets were selling for $1000.
A bit of research and this current tour is expected to bring in $1.2 billion dollars.
Amazing.

My 13 year old daughter would probably enjoy just teleporting there for the show, but has zero interest in actually going to the event. We were talking about the ticket prices this morning.
Can't say I've ever listened to anything shes has done. I'll leave it at that.

Same here, no clue about her music. IMO, there must be a huge promotion machine behind her, with a LOT of people making a LOT of money off her popularity.
As far as hard working, talented, female musicians making it on their own, I'm a big fan of Samantha Fish, Ana Popovich, Alexs Sever, Joanne Shaw Taylor and quite a few other ladies that are doing it the hard way, and kicking ass. Artists that'll sit with ya after the show, autograph whatever you have, and take photos with ya. Samantha is great at taking selfies with YOUR phone.

Not a fan but I have listened to a bit of her music over the years. VERY talented and seems to be well grounded. She voices her displeasure of the ticket prices too.
She donated a bunch to a foodbank in Denver this tour. That's a good move in my books. I hope all the 'Swifties' out there had a good time, I hear she puts on a great show.

I've always said that Dido's songs have two themes:
1) You're leaving me and it's all your fault.
2) I'm leaving you and it's all your fault.

Her songs are everywhere, for the guys saying that they've never heard her they probably have.
They are your standard top 40, listenable but I'm not heading out to create a spotify playlist. The question in my mind is how much of it is she writing herself vs doing it country style where songwriters send you stuff to record and call your own. If she is writing it herself I'll say she is talented and deserves the hype, if she's just recording other peoples material then it is what it is.

She's well known as a talented song writer and has been doing it a long time. The messages in her songs are certainly questionable, but some are catchy. I can listen to some of them and not hate them. Actually, I may hate myself a little for liking them.

All I know is back in the 90s, I expected music to be taken over by slammed 100 spoke Geo-Metros blaring gangster-rap out of tinny base speakers while they vibrated apart.
I'm... quite fine with the direction the majority of popular music took instead. Teen girls listening to Taylor Swift vs back a few decades ago, teen girls listening to rap about screwing h@s and murdering bit$$es, at 100db no less, the moment their parents were gone.
Some things surprisingly... have actually gotten better.
Some of you amuse me.
While I don?t partake of everything in today?s pop culture, I am at least aware of most things.
Those of you who say you haven?t heard one of her songs probably have even if you didn?t know it was her or the cave you?re living in is so isolated from society that Bin Laden would be jealous.

I looked up what songs of hers were in movies and TV. I have, in fact, heard many taylor swift songs. I've seen Sing 2, Supernatural, The Secret Life of Pets, The Bear, You, Pitch Perfect 2, Always Sunny, The Hunger Games, and New Girl.

I can pretty much guarantee she isn't being played on any of my Amazon music stations, and I listen to audio books while driving.

Post Malone. Great music, great guy. He may look goofy as shit, but he is a down to earth dude who also happens to love firearms.

I know Taylor Swift well enough to know I'll stick to heavy rock.
She's a well produced artist that draws teen girls in with the dreams of making it big with auto-tune.

I know I have heard Tony Bennet songs.
Taylor Swift? I'd have to have it pointed out to me that it is one of hers.
I don't see many movies, rarely watch TV and don't listen to top 40 radio.
Do I live in a cave as suggested?
No. I have other interests that seem to have kept me away from her influence.

Yeah I was surprised when I heard him do.some covers of old outlaw country from the 70's, just him and a guitar. He has talent and a good sense of humor

I can't say I've kept track of her but her early stuff was very good and I can understand why teenage girls still go for her work. She is also an extremely hard worker and from I've heard gives her audience a great show.
I detest her politics but the girls going to her show are going for the music and the event, not her politics.
Boy bands made a lot of money when we were younger and it wasn't because teenage boys were so keen to attend.
