View Full Version : Explosion on the Rainbow Bridge
Sounds like someone blew themselves up at the border checkpoint. News to follow!
Nothing to see.
The NY Governor said it is not terrorism.
But must admit for just some random accident the car estimated to be going 100 and flying through the air (video exists) is pretty impressive. I thought flying car and explosion was just a movie thing…

Curious about the NY gov intentions.
All news reports indicated "the car was packed with explosives" which would jive with the large debris field from the vehicle.
Of course, we'll learn more (of what they want us to know) as the story develops.
ETA: Got a chance to see the video of the wreck. The debris field is most likely due to the speed at which the wreck occurred, but DAMN, they were flying (at one point, very literally!).
I'd say it's still too early to know exactly what the cause of this was, but I'm definitely backing away from "probably terrorism" until I learn more.

What? Foot slipped off the brake.
That's some Evil Knievel air.
First I've heard of this. More details?

That's some Evil Knievel air.
That was one of my first thoughts as well, along with "That'd make them Duke boys proud".

Investigators believe the man who died had plans to attend a KISS concert in Canada, but when it was canceled he went to a casino in the US instead. The crash occurred sometime after the couple left the casino, the sources said.
My guess is drunk.
I don't know what the "ramp" was that got them air born, BUT they did get some serious airtime. WOW!
My first thought was that someone had a serious health issue, maybe heart attack, and lost self control. Will we ever find out, hard telling.
That thing left a Hollywood worthy debris field, all because of a cancelled KISS concert!

I always wondered if a an OBD2 reader could do this via bluetooth? If you are driving a 2022 Bentley, you definitely are wealthy. Security issues are mentioned in Wikipedia link below. Was the car parked by a valet service at the casino?

It is likely a "drive by wire" throttle instead of mechanical- meaning a computer operates the throttle valve based on pedal position.
I am tempted to blame good old British electrical systems but Bentley is owned by Volkswagon and there aren't a lot of stories about Jettas rocketing themselves through structures due to computer error.

Hell, aren't ALL modern vehicles controlled by electronic throttles? As in, no more cables or mechanical linkages? That's why I bought a Pedal Commander for my Silverado, to tune throttle response.

If the driver was intoxicated, as they're now believing him to have been, he likely could have been stomping on the gas, thinking he was on the brakes - wondering why the car wasn't slowing down/stopping.

I just did some preliminary searches, but it seems to fit a profile. The guy owns 7 Ace hardware stores. Has family connection to Palm Beach, Florida. Court records show ownership of a 47 foot go fast boat that can do 125MPH. Was on trial for tax evasion, but accounting showed they actually overpaid their taxes. Just strange factoids.
It is going to be really hard to prove murder with the car completely destroyed. 650 horse power turbocharged 12 cylinder motor. Yeah like the authorities said "DUI".

Terrible waste of fine machine.
If you're unarmed, you are a victim.
