Found a smoking deal on a Savage 110 in 243 for my daughter for hunting so I snagged it. This will also double as a fun range toy and coyote gun (I reload 58 grain Vmax for coyotes and have always preferred the 243 for long range coyote hunting)

Now I am wondering if I made a mistake and should have got a 6mm creedmoor. Since i reload, the 6mm creedmoor would be fun for long range and still have the light recoil for my daughter to use for hunting.

Thoughts?

I doubt you made a mistake. The 243 is a classic. Are there newer, trendier, and maybe ?better? calibers out there? Sure. Does that make the 243 obsolete? Nope.

Now, if you?re just looking to justify another purchase then I?ll have your back and say you made a poor decision and that you should run out and grab the 6mm.

Long range, like past 600 yards, will depend on the bullet and twist, not so much the case that hold all the cartridge parts. The .243Win is a breeze to reload and if you are sticking with 100 grain and lighter bullets, I doubt you would have seen any difference at all.

I don?t think you made a mistake. If you already load for 243, you don?t need to worry about new dies or brass.

A lot of these cartridges that come out are barely a change from others that are already there.

I would agree that you didn't make a mistake, 243 will do 90% of what a 6 creed will do. That other 10% is pretty cool, you can take advantage of the heavy for caliber, high BC bullets. But the 243 is still a solid cartridge. However, if you ever get the itch, a savage prefit barrel can be had from basically any barrel maker and replacing that barrel is a simple project!

243 Winchester is solid for . Buy good ammo if you can. Elk needs more.
