Ok. I noticed a lack of pump shotgun in my stable. (Right after I thought I had too many..)

So are pump guns still useful and relevant? Or are semis just good and reliable enough now?

What do you recommend in a 18.5? version? Semi or pump. Looking for something that will serve as a truck and camping gun. Tough and reliable, no beauties.

Been running pump guns for 40+ years. Mostly Mossberg and Rem early on...lately Benelli Novas. I still shoot them all periodically and all have NEVER failed, but the Benellis have become my favorites.

Pumpers are fun and will always be relevant. Even if for just the sound of the action.

Can't go wrong with any mentioned above.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

Also, since you mentioned a truck or camping gun, a good, reliable semiautomatic is probably going to cost three or four times the price of a reliable pump action.

Same here. Had long preferred the mossberg 500 to the Rem 870. Lately the Nova is the one that gets used.

They make the tactical nova with a 18.5? barrel.

The Benelli Novas are good. One piece stock so no stock bolt to get loose, although if it breaks you might be hosed.

As in stock and receiver are one integral piece?

Correct, the stock and receiver are one piece on a Nova. The SuperNova has a more traditional stock. It comes with a comfortech stock like the SBE. Add me to the list of people who love their Nova. I've hunted with mine for almost 20 years. I've also won my class in the pump gun event at Colorado State Sporting Clays state championship many times. Which in my opinion, is a testament to their build quality and how well they shoot. I've even used mine in manual division 3 gun matches (when a division like that exists). The guns flat out run! The only parts I've replaced are the right and left shell latches. Both 10 dollar parts. Both the Nova and Supernova are also 3.5 chambers if that matters.

Yes. But I would doubt if you can manage to break one. Super sturdy.

I?m going to find a SN and see how it feels. I think an 18.5 police version with the +2 from the factory might be the ticket.

You won't be disappointed if you pick one up!

I shoot the Nova in 3Gun Heavy. Much prefer it to the Mossbergs and Remingtons. But don't overlook the SXP. They have some tactical versions as well, in 12 and 20. Chrome lined barrel and rotary bolt. Fire them one handed and the empty auto-ejects. So technically, it can be shot one handed fairly well.

Maverick 88's (budget mossy 500) are a great gun as well. They can be had for around $200.

Great, basic no frills functional scattergun. Don’t expect a whole bunch from it but for an under the bed gun hard to beat.

If you want to up the ante to a rock solid performer snag a 590A1

500 on the left, 88’s on the right. I’m a fan.
