View Full Version : .308 vs 6.5 Creed?
I want an AR-10. I guess technically I have an AR-10 because I have a stripped upper and lower. Nothing else.
I have no need for an AR-10. Hah! That?s never stopped me before, and it won?t stop me now. I?m trying to decide between.308 and 6.5 man bun.
Generally, every rifle I own has a purpose. I have several that were built for a specific once-a-year match. Haven?t shot that match in several years, but I have three rifles for it. I?m ok with having stupid stuff as long as I can conjure up a ?reason?.
So, what?s the purpose of this AR-10, Timmy boy? Excellent question.
#1 scratch the itch.
#2 fulfill the ?need? to deliver more energy on a target in whatever dystopian fantasy situation is in vogue today
#3 shoot Hoser?s tactical rifle match in the He-Man division
#4 shoot the occasional long range match with it just because I can
I don?t load for either cartridge anymore, but that is easily remedied.
308 seems a little better if I really need to put energy on a target at closer ranges. The odds of that actually being necessary are vanishing small, but I just need a reason. It doesn?t have to be practical. 65 Creed would be much better in a long range match. The odds of me doing that are about 1000 times higher than having to stop a pack of rampaging zombies.
In the end, I don?t actually care which way I go. Seems to me like it?s a fun discussion to have, and this site is sadly lacking in entertaining chatter lately.
What do you say?

Bonus to .308 is you can run 7.62x51 through it, and bonus to that is you can get some linked 7.62 and wear it like rambo.

Because .308 is .30 cal and 6.5 is quarter inch.
Because .308 is 3/4 ton 4x4 and 6.5 is Maverick.
Because .308 is He-Man and 6.5 is man bun.
Because .308 is whack and 6.5 is slap.
If you're unarmed, you are a victim.
308 is kind of like a 1911. Been around a while and lots of people love it but perhaps it?s long past its prime and there are better options but people stick with it because of nostalgia.
I?m sure there?s math and science involved but I bet out to a certain distance the 308 probably has some sort of ballistic advantage and I would guess once you get past that distance the 6.5 really starts to shine.
I guess you could just decide what distances you plan to do most of your shooting and go that route?
Or maybe it?s as simple as just deciding if you?re willing to commit to the man bun and sandals?
Can you jam a 45-70 into an AR-10 magazine? I haven?t seen anyone do that and a 450 grain subsonic round suppressed would be sweet.

More factory zombie loads in .308 than 6.5?

308 is kind of like that one pleasantly plump girl that is grateful you asked her out. Probably a fun time but is that really the life you envision long term?
The 6.5 is kind of like dating a stripper. Probably hotter than the plump girl and although she is less grateful for you asking her out it really doesn?t matter. Of course is dating a stripper really something you want to do long term either? Probably not.
What?s the third caliber option?

Do the 6.5. If you decide to do a lr team match you can share dope/wind/ammo with your bolt gunner more readily
My Large pattern AR has 2 uppers. 18" .308 for He-Man 3Gun and a 22" 6.5CM for anything else. I did shoot an Elk with the 6.5CM, but only because I had neck surgery and was limited. If I did not shoot 3Gun, I am not sure I'd even have a large frame AR still. But the 6.5CM is a lot of fun to shoot.
Some good points and some entertaining points. Thanks for playing along. I was rooting around in the cabinet where I store projectiles and found 1100 or so 142SMK's from back when I was shooting a .260. That discovery might have made the decision for me. I do also like the reduced recoil over a .308 for those occasions when I might shoot it in a LR match.
Surprised nobody has said this yet...

308.
So much easier to troubleshoot.
125 TNTs for close up stuff. 175 Matchkings or 185 Juggs for distance.
You are going to want those 142s for Cals boltgun.

Sweet Jesus, I thought I’d seen every meme ever, but I hadn’t seen that one. Glorious!

Good point.
How big a pain in the arse do you suppose it would be to develop a subsonic .308 load? Impossible in an AR-10?

Ask yourself, do you wanna Creamoore?
I built a really nice 260 AR. It was a beauty. I never shot it and it turned into something useful ;)

And have it function as a semi auto? You cant get there from here.
Good point.

AA 1680, 220g SMKs, a 1.5 ounce buffer and a JP flat wire spring.

Yeah but think of all the fun you can have reforming her from her stripper ways... It's not her fault her Dad didn't tell her he loved her. But if you show her you do... You will have glitter in your life forever. Even if she leaves
