Free Air!

Never thought I would see it again but walking into Lowes today, I spied a sign over in the corner of the parking lot. The installed a free air compressor for their "pro partners".

Looking around online, it seem they have been doing it for a couple of years but this is the first time I noticed it at the Lowes near me.

Apparently, Air Compressors are becoming handheld today. I bought one for like $70, that promptly broke. but I see ads all day for new revisions. Let me know if/when they have it all straightened out, because it is too cool to have your own, portable, air compressor.

The 'free air' thing is something I noticed after moving here. Seems to be common and I usually don't even pay attention to it any longer. But, it's still nice to see a company do something for it's customers...even a small token like this could be helpful.

How many still remember when gas station attendants would routinely wash your windshield and offer to air up your tires? Fortunately, tires nowadays are much better than in the 50's and 60's, and don't need to be aired up every week or two.

Free air is something I don't see at stations around here but Ill have to check out the local Lowes. If needed, I usually stop at Discount Tire where they do it quickly, and free.

For a summer and more in high school, I worked for Goodyear doing tires, batteries and brakes. The better tires weren't only rubber, but had steel belted tread and fiberglass in the sidewalls (Polyglas). Radial ply tires were just coming into the market.

Grandpa owned a service station in Texas. Dad grew up working there.

So, although I barely remember "full service" stations, I know all about them.

I have yet to find any self-serve free air that can inflate to 80psi.

Remember, heck I worked at a full service station when I was in vo-tech. I had cash and a coin changer on me and I wouldn't even consider doing that these days.

I used to see the full service island and think to myself why would anyone pay 10 cents or so more a gallon for full service?”
I would do that all day long today. Gas hovered around 85 to 95 cents a gallon.
