Monday- $1300 for new BFGs on my FJ Cruiser.
Tuesday- Get on the highway to go to a Sally Beauty in Cheyenne (work- not pleasure). TPMS light is on. Pull off at I-70 and Peoria to check pressure. Missing valve caps. Pressures from 34 to 39. Worried about the lug nut torque. Call Discount to tell them about the issue and I will bring it in tomorrow. I ask the kid several direct questions about the issue (having been a mechanic and parts guy for a decade). He has no idea what I am talking about...
Wednesday- I set them all to the same cold pressure and the light was still on.
Went back to Discount. Different kid says the left front isn't working and admitted it may be their fault. Popped off the tire and said it looks fine, battery likely dead. $60 for a new one.
I said no thanks, a piece of black tape over the light is free. He put it back together and tried to drive it out but doesn't know how to drive a manual.
I jump in and stop right away. I get out and walk over to him to tell him... great job- the light is out!
His buddy laughs and says "Toyotas are like that, kinda weird sometimes".
My takeaway- Life is like that, kinda weird sometimes.

tpms is a general pain in the ass. I hate yellow/red on the dash.

Remember when being able to drive a manual was a job requirement for working in any kind of automotive shop?

TPMS drives me nuts. It's super sensitive in my HD truck. Rears at 80psi drop just enough when it's cold in the morning to light up the dash. By the afternoon it's off again and sitting perfectly at 80. Cool weather shouldn't light up the warning.

They recently wrote me a check for $1200. Overall, it was about as good as experience as it could be. Of course, I had them dead to rights on video, so that probably did a great deal to grease the wheels.

In tractor trailers, some of the old ones had three stickshifts and more switches than a 747.
Today they're all automatic transmissions with just 2 buttons for the air brakes, and a rear facing camera to record the driver.

Having used Discount Tire on several occasions, I would love to hear the stories. Should they be avoided?
The last time I used them was for tires on my manual trans Jeep. It was fun watching the first guy go out to get my Jeep and immediately go back to get someone else who could drive a stick.

2023 F-250 XLT, 356 miles.
I wanted to get rid of the craptastic OEM Bridgestones and put Michelins on it. I bought the tires on TireRack and made the appointment for install at Discount Tire close to my work.
Cool, get the confirmation email and we are good to go.
Appointment day and time arrives- I arrive, go to check in and the dork at the counter tells me he has no idea what I am talking about, they don’t have the tires in stock. I show him the confirmation e mail that shows the order and appointment confirmed for that location and he looks at me and says “I don’t have it in the system-it’s not my problem-don’t know what to tell you.”
I leave before I earn a felony charge and get back to my office, call their corporate offices and unload on the guy who takes the call. He is furious and apologizes up one side and down the other. I hang up and about 5 minutes later I get a call from a very, very apologetic regional manager.
He tells me he has the tires I wanted at another store but they are a higher speed rating and he will eat the difference.
Fine, I go back to the original store after work to get them installed.

Every single wheel gouged down to the bare aluminum.
They wanted to repair them, I told them absolutely not-the truck was brand new and only had 356 miles on it-I wouldn't accept "repaired" wheels.
3 e mails back and forth with quotes from 2 different Ford dealers and and 4 days later a check showed up from the highest quote.

When I went in on Monday, there was a cute little blonde chick that drove it out to me. I told her I was surprised she can drive a manual. She laughed and said a lot of those kids can't but her Jeep is a manual. I fell in love...

I'll continue to go there. I've always had good service, and this is something that was a simple mistake that they took ownership of and worked to make correct.

Every time we have a cold snap all the women at my school come to me all scared because the TPMS came on while they drove into work. They don’t know what the light means and I have to repeatedly explain what happened.
I will usually top off the tire to spec and I’m the hero of the day! Thanks Craftsman.

I have been living without TPMS on my winter tires because Discount Tire said they couldn't get the new TPMS to fit the wheels. They said they could try shaving the TPMS to get them to fit and I just said, "no thanks, I'll take the car now."

What brand?
My 3500 RAM has TPIS (pressure display only, no warnings or idiot lights) by factory default though I could change it to TPMS used on the 2500's. I can also adjust the pressure thresholds using JScan or AlfaOBD. I can also just completely disable it if needed.
If you drive a Ford, I know they use Forscan and can probably do the same. Can't say for GM but I think you're boned if it is.

Ram 2500. I have the pressure display for all four tires AND the TPMS warning light. Worst part is the center display defaults to the tire pressure screen on every start if the sensors think the pressure is too low. Which drives me nuts having to turn it back to my preferred speed display each time I start the truck when it's cold.
I may have to try to adjust the pressure threshold as you described.

If you don't already have the setup, you'll need a security gateway module bypass cable if it's 2018+, decent OBDII reader, and either AlfaOBD or Jscan. AlfaOBD is Android or Windows only.

DO NOT get the 12+8 cable or modules they use for the 1500's. The SGM on the HD's are up behind the instrument cluster. The cable I linked plugs into the canbus blocks behind the headlight switch.
TPMS on my 08 Xterra has been messed up for at least 6 years. Didn't work great before . . . and I'm not really inclined to fix it. Dealer has told me "we can probably fix that for $xxx if you want". Nah. I'll save the money and the very real chance they stop working again anyway and I'll just check the pressure myself regularly. Drove the vast majority of my life without TPMS.

You do know that it's just f'ing with you now; right?!
TPMS is bluetooth in tires rotating at a million miles per hour.
BLUETOOTH, enough said.
I took my truck into the shop for an oil change and tire rotation, and after I got out I was going to read them a riot, when the same "low" pressure tire was still on my right rear.
By the next morning, TPMS had figured out that it moved to the left front.
And, just to clarify something, you will absolutely get TPMS lights as tire pressure changes due to temperature. This is what it is made for... too little, too much, tire pressure (which fluctuates by temperature.)

Toyota TPMS Sensors are not that expensive. You can get a whole set for less than $40. Paying a Tire Shop $60 for one is prison rape status.
