I had an old rocket launcher tube I'd originally had shipped from Poland via boat, for a really cool project. Back in high school I made a shoulder launched recoilless gun (black powder) from a length of PVC pipe that was kinda fun, but white plastic tube doesn't look very cool... this was STEEL painted olive drab, with sights, pistol grip, trigger, shoulder stock, and backblast cage... it looked awesome.

However, due to the constant fire bans in the mountains, I knew I'd never be able to safely shoot it off, so I never got around to installing the switches and wires, and it just sat in my closet, untouched, for years.

Last year I posted on here if anyone had any interest, dropped the price to $40 and still nothing. Then I listed it on craigslist thinking some hipster might want to turn it into a lamp or a vase for plastic flowers. Zero interest there either.

Was cleaning out my closets the other day, remembered I had it, then saw there was a gun buyback going on this week, so decided to see if they'd gib me a $50 grocery gift card for it. I knew if I threw it in a dumpster, within hours some hobo would be walking down Colfax with it, and SWAT would roll the Bearcats with a helicopter circling overhead as they blocked traffic for a quarter mile radius, and we just can't have that. People would be inconvenienced.

So I roll down there with this stupid thing in my trunk and was shocked by how many people were there. I got there before the event started and there were already a dozen cars lined up and about 50 volunteers in yellow vests... but they were all untrained and none seemed to know what they were doing, they couldn't even direct traffic properly. Another thing that surprised me was that there wasn't a single cop, nor a camera crew.

The very nice old lady told me everything was anonymous so no cameras were allowed, and the cops were not there because "some people don't want to go to an event if police are there." Then she handed me a form to fill out.

Form asked a series of survey questions:
Are you a veteran?
Why are you turning in the gun?
How do you store the gun?
Do you have gun training?
Do you have a CCW?
How did you acquire the gun?
Do you own other guns?

There were two men in orange vests who were removing the guns from trunks, inspecting them, then dryfiring them into something that looked like an oversized thermos, on the asphalt, while surronded by volunteers.

One car turned in a battered old 22 bolt action, another turned in a 36 caliber flintlock squirrel rifle, the third car, however, turned in three modern firearms: a Remington 700 with high end bipod and scope, what looked like a brand new PSA AR15, and a Ruger Blackhawk revolver. Then it was my turn.

He looked in my trunk and went pale.

"Is that a grenade launcher?"
"Rocket launcher."
"Is it unloaded and the parts that make it fire have been removed?"
"Yep." He stared at it for awhile.
"I don't think we're even legally allowed to touch something like that!" So I went full hillbilly on him.

"Ah, no! Am I gonna get in trouble? This was mah paw's and I ain't got no use for it! All I want is a grocery gift card because muh family ain't got no foods!" He stared at it awhile longer.
"I can do that."

A few guys came over to look at it, then directed me to park in another area where they had canopies and tables set up... with 8 brand new Dewalt circular saws, and they cut it to pieces, gave me a gift card, and sent me on my way.

Observations follow:

Demographically, the volunteers appeared to be 100% caucasian. Half were high school kids, the other half were mostly past retirement age, about 70% female.

Everyone seemed VERY NICE. Smiling, cheerful, polite... but not very smart. Most were just standing around doing nothing. Some seemed totally unobservant wandering into the path of moving cars, only a handful seemed to know what they were doing.

This event was VERY well funded... vests, tables, canopies, signage, fliers, table saws, and a box filled with thousands of dollars worth of gift cards.

The nice old lady with the clipboard told me "Guns to Gardens" has chapters in all 50 states and does these events every month. That's a LOT of money right there!

Anyway, here's what $50 worth of groceries looks like in Denver.

Great report, always wanted to check one out. Nice trade for a fake launcher! I can imagine the look on their faces. I like your choice of groceries too!

Ummmmm... wasn't entirely fake. Custom made to "Wild Arms R&D" specs with a small tube blockage easily removed with the right power tools. More like an "80% lower" that, once the blockage was removed (which I can neither confirm or deny, as "I can't recall"), I could've reactivated it in about an hour with a few electrical components I already had. After all, launchers are basically just a tube with a switch, battery, wires, and ignitor... that's simple... the projectile is the complicated part. Looked exactly like a WWII bazooka.

So they get to bypass background checks? 3-day waiting periods?

Should have called the CBI to have them all arrested for committing felonies in breaking Colorado's gun laws.

That's what I was thinking; just wrong

Every gun was sawed to pieces in front of you, in front of at least 20 witnesses, just before they gave you the gift card(s).

$50 for rifles and shotguns
$150 for handguns
$250 for "assault rifles"
Only redeemable at King Soopers.

That person received $450 worth of King Soopers gift cards in exchange for the Blackhawk (150), scoped Remington 700 (50), and AR15 (250).

Absolutely no way for any volunteer to steal one.

I was told all the metal was taken by a local blacksmith, who was one of the guys in an orange vest.

$450 was probably the value of that scope alone.

I have looked into a bit and can't find a source for the funding.

Them Red Stripes ain't free- who is behind this nonsense?

Sawing isn’t an approved method of destruction. I’d argue that they still transferred guns at least twice illegally. In addition to I assume cutting barrels to a NFA length. God help them if they destroyed a serial number too…….

I believe it is the Presbyterian Church who funds this. The metal is used to make garden tools. Thus the name.

Their Bible must have left out the book of Joel.

Not a matter of someone stealing one. Or cutting them up. A transfer still happened. If it was documented with 20 witnesses...

Illegal transfer between parties. All transfers require a background check though an FFL and a 3 day wait before receiving the firearm...

Both the program and sellers are guilty. The anti gunners wanted this nonsense, so enforce it.

As much as we would like to see it, prosecutorial discretion would keep them from being charged with anything.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

I wonder if they take ammunition? I'm guessing someone on the staff was LEO trained and maybe even carrying.

I remember when they started some of these buy-backs years ago in certain s-hole cities and seeing lots of police at them. I'd love to see a list of what they take in in a year. There has to be some real jewels that show up!

LOL that's hilarious.

I have this old .22 that two gun smiths have told me that would cost more than the gun is worth to fix. So it sits broken in my safe. I always thought, what am I gonna do with it. I am tired of moving it every time I move, maybe I'll have it destroyed. Called local ATF and they said just take hammer and throw it out (basically). I'm like you want me to throw a gun in the trash? It's not functional now but I'm sure some ingenuity someone could make it happen. I don't have major cutting tools. So yet it still sits. I always thought if I came across a gun buyback I could at least get a couple of bucks for it that way. But there aren't any in my area that I know of.

As was experienced in New Mexico, it's not a violation of the law when done for the "right" (i.e., Left) reasons. No prosecutions, not even a negative article in the press.

Negative.

One of the top rules is no ammo of any kind. Proper disposal of ammo by someone who does not intend to shoot it would likely flummox them.

The other big rule is no compensation for homemade zip guns (which people were building out of scrap specifically for such buyback events).

I know a lotta guys have cheap nonfunctional handguns like broken Jennings, Cobra, Sterling, Raven, Lorcin, or RG "Saturday Night Specials" with cast zinc frames and brittle firing pins... and $150 honestly seems a fair price for a worn out Hi Point pistol.

Then there are cheap ARs with polymer lowers or bad headspacing which were damaged beyond repair, or maybe a beater AK with a corroded bore and bent barrel you stripped all the parts from.

Hell, feel free to turn them in for giftcards.

And when G-Money goes back to prison for his third armed robbery, maybe his moms will find da switched Glock fawty wit da stendo in his sock drawer and turn that nightmare into groceries as well.

The major issue I have with such programs is first, they had no EMT on site in the event of an accident (ND, MVA, saw related, or even sunstroke). Second, I'm sure some rare and valuable antiques are being turned in, and if an FFL was on site he could separate that original Colt Peacemaker from the junk, document it, place it on consignment, and give the organization 75% of the sale price toward more gift cards... that way everyone wins.

These can be candidates for donation to gunsmithing schools.

You know how you double the value of the old German Rohm pistols/revolvers?

Load them.

You know how you double the value of the old German Rohm pistols/revolvers?

Load them.

The first handgun I owned I bought on the schoolbus when I was 14 back in the early 80s... it was an RG-14 snubnosed 22 LR... smaller than an old Smith I-frame and functioned flawlessly... the only issue was there was no rifling left in the barrel so it literally shot sideways, like a 24" pattern all over the target (with a few fliers) at 3 feet... at 5 feet I couldn't hit the target at all.

I thought they were garbage too, but then I read some forum posts and watched a few videos and saw other guys getting decent groupings at 10 feet and now I kinda want another one, lol.

I heard the 38 snubs run well too, but they're a boat anchor due to the zinc alloy frame.
