If you could buy or recommend your absolute favorite or dream handguards/rail, what would it be? What makes your favorite stand out to you?

Ain't gonna lie - I'm fond of the retro look. So for me, my favorite is the triangular A1-style handguards.

Noveske NSR is my favorite handguard I own. It's on my 3 gun rifle. Comfortable in the hand and stiff enough I can't flex it into the gas block on barricades. I had a similar one that was cheaper and it would make contact with the gas block throwing shots all over the place. I was also impressed with the Brownells wrenchman precision handguards. Unfortunately it looks like they were discontinued.

+1 used to roll with Acerbis. Perhaps literally... they do hold up very well.

Acerbis guy here as well.

As far as rifle handguards go, I prefer a small diameter since I have small, girly hands. The Aero Precision S and R series really agrees with me.

I'm not a fan of aluminum handguards. I like a2 handguards on a 20in rifle and m4 handguards on a carbine.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

Depends on the rifle, but I really like SLR Solo Lite and Solo Ultralite.

Thanks for all the input already, guys! I've looked at every single suggestion so far!

I have always seemed to favor the thinner profile too and definitely NOT a quad rail type style. Several of my rifles have Samson Evolution or Midwest Industries Lightweight models, but I don't want to just be a creature of habit and keep using the same stuff when there's so much out there I haven't seen or used yet. Carbon Fiber has of course crossed my mind... I think Hoser's idea of a PRI Carbon is high up on my list. It looks similar to the Coda Evolution carbon forend I've seen previously too.

One thing I should probably keep in mind is the fact it's going to be used on a 16" barrel with a midlength gas system, but running an Adams Arms piston system instead... at least for a little while to see if I like it/notice a big difference when running suppressed. I'm hoping to keep gasses from coming back into the upper and in my face, so having access to the adjustable gas block, even if only through the holes in the rail, is a must...

Been pretty happy with Geissle MK8 & MK14’s.

I agree, hard to beat the basic ergonomics, or look, of that tapered shape and triangular grip.

I've used a lot of iterations of the Midwest Industries handguards through the years. [EDIT: I thought these (https://midwestindustriesinc.com/mi-g4-one-piece-free-float-handguard-m-lok-compatible/) were discontinued; I like these better than the ones I originally posted.] I have a couple of their rails before keymods and mloks were the thing. Every one has been good, and their barrel nuts and lock systems are always intuitive and easy to install. I also have some of their two piece for my carbine and midlength for my FSB rifles. Those are excellent. They are extremely light, but lock in place perfectly with zero slop.

I've used the Aero enhanced and Atlas on my M4 and M5 builds. They work well once installed. Getting the Atlas screw/lock to work correctly is annoying at times. The enhanced handguard with the enhanced upper is great. The enhanced upper wit the barrel nut and shims can be annoying. Once it is all setup, they work well and look great.

Nostalgia: XM177/CAR-15 Handguards. Simple, inexpensive , lightweight, good at what they do.

Practical/Night Fighting: SOLGW L89 Rail. Solid, durable, rigid enough for MFAL use if you have one, plan on getting one, or think you might find one laying on the ground someday. Integrated QD swivels at the rear of the rail, and 7 sided MLOK.

Free.

Haha well I have a pile of OEM plastic two piece drop ins, but they wouldn’t be free anymore since you moved away from CO.

in case anyone ever wonders, the Coda Evolution carbon fiber handguards are not compatible with Adams Arms Piston conversion kits. Even the low profile gas block version. It's not a clearance issue inside the rail... that's sufficient, although it might make contact with the top of the adjustable gas block if something is pushing down heavily on the top of the carbon fiber rail... it's pretty close, but it clears. The issue is the barrel nut and trunnion are too "deep" into the rail.
