View Full Version : Weed Murderizer Pueblo?

Those of you who live in Pueblo or similar arid parts of the state, what are you using to kill weeds in xeriscaped areas (i.e. there does not need to be consideration to preserve grass?)

Notice I used the term "murderizer." My attitude towards these weeds is like Roberrt DeNiro as Al Capone in the movie "the Untouchables":

I want them DEAD. I want their FAMILIES DEAD! I want their HOUSES BURNED TO THE GROUND!

So any recommendations for a good weed annihilator are welcomed. This would be for the front yard so pets are not an issue either.

I'm ready to go scorched earth. Maybe literally? [Flame]

I just got rid of about a gallon of 2 year old gas drained out of an old Yamaha.

Could have been yours for free!

1. Vinegar-Based Weed Killer:

- Ingredients:

- 1 gallon of white vinegar

- 1 tablespoon of dish soap (to help the solution stick to the weeds)

- Optional: 1 cup of salt

- Directions:

1. Fill a container with the white vinegar.

2. Add the dish soap and mix thoroughly.

3. Optionally, include salt in the mixture.

4. Pour your desired amount into a garden sprayer.

Awesome! I will give that a try! Thanks!

They sell a stronger concentrate on Amazon. 1:8 mix with water.

Yo can also sometimes find higher concentrate white vinegar at farm/ranch supply stores, eg Bomgaars, Big R, Murdoch's, Tractor Supply, etc. I have only physically seen it at Bomgaars (in Burlington), but I wasn't really looking for it or been in the right departments at the others. Might be worth a phone call.

I use Dicamba for our large infestations of myrtle spurge. It's selective for broadleaf plants and leaves grasses alone. If you want to nuke everything, good ol glyphosate (aka Roundup) is the proven choice. A spray indicator dye is really helpful to see what's been covered--it disappears in a day or two. Don't breathe in any of this shit.

You can get the 20% (regular vinegar is 5%) at HomeDepot and Walmart.

Kilz All or 33% vinegar.

I use store bought vegetation killer. I think the main ingredient is glycophosphate or something that looks like that word. If you buy it at one of the farm stores it is usually about a 44% solution and a gallon goes a long way when mixed with water as directed.

They sell similar stuff at Lowes and Home Depot but the concentration is way less, it doesn?t cover as much, and generally doesn?t work well.

If I were you I would make a trip to your closest farm and ranch store and see what they have.

Sorry I posted that from the ER in a hurry. I am not a big fan of the herbicides that are complex chemicals manufactured by the big corporations. Some of these herbicides are probably not fit to be used anywhere, especially not around your residence.

I am sick AF from exposure to beryllium oxide during military service. I am not a greenie, but some products produced by the big corporations should be legally banned.

The stuff I've used for the last decade or so is Ortho Weed B Gone MAX, has always worked for me. Cut the weeds down and then spray directly on to the cut stalk. Buy the concentrate refill jugs and spray it straight up.

Avoid salt if near other things you don?t want to kill.

Watch spraying vinegar. I gave up as it always made my eyes burn and probably not good to inhale.

I think 5%of the population is sensitive to beryllium.

As a farmer I will tell you no product other than glycophos, aka Roundup, can be effectively and economically be applied. The California lawsuit that killed the Roundup name simply made weed control and farming many times more costly. Even so, glycophos remains less costly than concentrated vinegar.

If you use vinegar, tell us about the increased fruit fly activity around you house.

Weed burner. Just don’t start a fire. Don’t burn the weeds, just enough heat to visually wilt them usually kills them. Roundup does work very well

Weed burning works well to kill weeds above ground. I sometimes use it on my long gravel driveway. It stunts the growth but the roots allow the plant to re emerge. Periodic burning can be effective over gravel or barren ground where the risk of fire is miminimized.

That?s the stuff that starts with a G that is was trying not recommend in my earlier post.

I used to get a product from the big box stores that contained maybe 14%. You had to mix like a quart of it to two gallons of water and it cost roughly $30 for a gallon container.

I discovered that the farm store had the same stuff but it was a 44% concentration and the gallon of product still cost me about $30 but instead of mixing a quart of product to 2 gallons I was now mixing about 8 ounces to two gallons so much better yield for my investment.

Oh, and pro tip?. Be careful spraying it if it?s windy and there?s vegetation nearby that you don?t want to kill. Ask me how I know.

A lot of noxious weeds especially thistle requires Amine 2-4-D to actually kill it. I use a mixed concentrate that I spray on my mountain property to keep the thistle under control.

Rock salt. Buy a giant bag used for water softeners. Don?t get the pellets, but the rock salt. Sprinkle, water a bit and it will kill the weeds and pretty much make the ground sterile for anything growing for a while. Every time it rains, the salt dissolves more and kills more. Caution, will kill thing around it too as it seeps in the soil. Cheap and won?t cause health issues.

And as Ray said, farm stores for the 2 1/2 gallon jugs or local co-op for larger quantities.

RM43 brand has another chemical that acts as a binder to the soil and extends effective time.

Roundup jugs from HD for use in your yard in town.

Watch out for wind drift, only takes a little to wreck your lawn or garden.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

I use a mix of ground clear and 2-4d concentrates and a few drops of dish soap and water in my sprayer and it takes care of 99% of weeds.
