There are new regulations for shooters in these areas. The signs posted read "no alcohol consumption allowed" and you are only allowed to shoot at paper targets or metal swinging targets "designed for firearm use". If you shoot at someone else's crap they left, its now your target... which I'm assuming it means you can get a citation for shooting cans left by someone else! No shooting at glass, cans, electronics, etc. and if you get caught, you get fined.
Kudos to the Forest Service... maybe this will keep the trash levels to a minimum. The Forest Service and the Boulder Co Sheriff have been policing these area regularly...

Many folks take these areas for granted... and don't realize how lucky we are to be able to enjoy shooting on Forest Service land. I'm originally from the upper Midwest and we had nothing like these areas. There, you had to go to either an indoor or outdoor range and pay, or if you knew someone out in the boonies, they'd let you shoot on their private land.
Lets all try to pack out trash when you can. I have to say that Left Hand looks noticeably better this year since the May clean up. I know there are many people hauling out stuff... hopefully this continues...

At least we can still shoot there.
If everyone keeps it clean, and shoots responsively.
Imagine that.

Nice. Finally a sensible reaction to the situation.
For Now if it can be kept clean they will not shut it down.
Would be nice if we could organize a work force and create better
berms to shoot into. Maybe even a railroad tie retaining wall to nail the targets to....
OOOPS! There I go daydreaming again......[LOL]

i have wondered this as well. how much would they let us change, if anything? i think people would take the responsibility and make the range our own and put in work if everyone could get organized and knew it was legal

Does anyone know who to contact about the area? Forest service?
I would be willing to invest some time and labor (and some cash if it is prudent) if we were allowed to.
Maybe some of us could get together and try to come up with something.....
I am for it if someone could get us to the next level.....

I asked the Forest Service about making target bases and such. Their comment was is they can't make such "permanent" installations... Which is kinda bs because they've built a challenge 4wd trail with anchors for winches, etc. My personal opionion is that they put up with shooters where the 4wd folks are more pro active with the Forest Service rangers.

I can't see getting a citation for this.

I can't see getting a citation for this no matter what the sign says.

Why not? If you're shooting at bottles, cans or computer monitors it is considered littering, even if you intend to pick it up. Direct from the Forest Service " you can't pick up every piece if your shooting at tv's, monitors, etc." "If you shoot at it, it is YOUR target"
If it isn't a target as I mentioned in the first post they can write you a citation. Simple as that.
I think its great. I was up there this morning and someone left behind a shot up 27" tv and a computer monitor. I don't understand what the attraction is of shooting this type of stuff...

And how are they going to prove that you were shooting at something or not?

Well, go back, look at the picture in my previous post and read the second paragraph under
"IT IS PROHIBTED TO:"

:( Why the resistance? Am I missing something? Is it Big Brother syndrome? I don't think its ever been legal to litter (why would you want to anyway?) in a National Forest... shooting or during any activity

Sometimes I take other's trash out with me, sometimes I don't.

Yep, I'm guilty too... I'll take a pot shot at something I didn't bring, but I do have a paper target stand and a metal swinging target that I normally shoot at.

I hauled the largest part of the monitor out along with a giant garbage bag of stuff another shooter must have picked up. Thanks to those who help... Left Hand seems to be policing it self better than I can ever remember...

Has nothing to do with wanting to shoot things other than card board, but more with perpetuating the fear that you'll be persecuted for something you didn't do. How is anything supposed to stand without proof is all I'm saying.

Well I'm glad you can still shoot clay targets[Clays]

Here is my brush with the law concerning this... I was at the North Site and there was maybe three groups of people shooting in different areas. A Boulder County Sheriff walked up to each group and asked what, specifically, they were shooting at. As I was being questioned, another group walked over to see what was up. The Sheriff then asked them what they where shooting at. They were shooting at a gallon milk carton across the range that they said was there when they arrived. He said they were in violation and gave them a verbal warning and asked that they take the carton with them when they left.

So I guess the Forest Service nipped it in the bud by the rule of only discharging a firearm at an approved target. Discharge a firearm at a can, bottle, dirt backstop without a target is verboten... I wonder if I'm in violation if I miss my metal swinging target and hit dirt behind it. I'm in trouble!!

Well, according to the posted sign...

I would like to think that there is still Deputy discretion [Luck]

I'll never go there to shoot so I don't really care, just curios.
