View Full Version : My FL 308 die is gouging my brass

Lately my RCBS full length sizibg die has been gouging the necks of my 308 brass.
Obviously that causes all kinds of gas leakage (ha ha [Gas2]).

I have disassembled my die and tried to clean it with solvent and rubbing alcohol and it is still ruining my otherwise pristine brass.

Has anyone ran into this issue?

Any suggestions?

Duh!
Yes, but really, aren't dies supposed to be super duper tough steel?
It has to be some kind of deposit...

I threw away an entry level Hornady .308 die for similar reasons a few years back. I cleaned it profusely but the impressions from flaws or material on the inside of the die continued to create imperfections on my brass… it wound up just being better to buy a new, and nicer die…

So,
I used this die for years.
This issue just came up a while ago.
So it is not a manufacturing flaw, it is something new.
I can't imagine that something scratched the actual die.
I have taken it apart and cleaned it but, whatever it is, it's not coming off with regular solvent.
I will try tomorrow to soak it in a suppressor cleaning solution...

those dies need cleaning more than one thinks they do. I use hoppes #9 let it sit till i remember to wipe it out with a q-tip, rinse and repeat. A 223 die had the same issues, till i ran a bore brush through it with some white colgate toothpaste The colgate (white) is a mild abrasive that has worked well many a year for light polishing of gun contact points.
