View Full Version : RV/Trailer alarm, GPS, security system?
Long shot but I thought I?d ask.
I will need to put my trailer in storage and keep hearing stories about theft.
Any of you gentlemen run a security system of some sort on your camping trailer? GPS? Door sensors? Let me know what you run or what you suggest.
Thanks.

Have no suggestions on what you may want to put in it. But wanted to mention that insurance for trailers can be purchased normally for pretty reasonable prices.

Curiously, I saw a video earlier today that stated that there are a very small number of camper door locks and that the keys for these are easily found/purchased off of places like Amazon. It suggested replacing the lock with a different/better lock.
A quick search on Amazon gave this as an option:

While expensive, your best bet against overall theft is a damned good hitch lock, like this:

My camper is currently is storage on a military base, the base I just retired from. I'm looking at moving my camper to one of 2 RV storage within 3 minutes of my house, or on my best friends property up in the mountains (not exactly convenient). If I use one of the nearby lots, I'll be upgrading the camper security too.
A Google search of "Camper Security" gave me this:
To improve camper security, focus on both preventing theft and deterring break-ins. Implement a multi-layered approach, including physical security measures like locks and alarms, and security-conscious habits like storing valuables out of sight and parking in well-lit areas.
Physical Security:
Upgrade locks:
Replace standard door and window locks with more robust options like deadbolts or keyless entry systems.
Secure entry points:
Install a coupler lock, hitch lock, and wheel locks to prevent towing and theft.
Consider a security system:
Install an alarm system, motion sensor lights, and consider a GPS tracking device.
Fortify storage:
Use sturdy locks on storage compartments and consider bolting down valuable items like generators.
Security Habits:
Secure valuables: Store valuables out of sight, ideally in a safe or with you.
Lock up: Always lock doors, windows, and storage compartments when leaving the camper unattended.
Maintain appearance: Keep your camper and surrounding area tidy to avoid appearing vulnerable.
Park smart: Choose well-lit and populated areas when possible.
Use visual deterrents: Consider decals, window films, or other visual indicators of security systems.
Consider a security camera: Install cameras with features like motion detection and night vision to monitor your surroundings.
Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to who is around and trust your instincts, according to a security blog

That might be true, but that's not my current experience. I just paid $1200 for the next 12 months of insurance with Progressive for my camper. OUCH!
Ok. So I did a Progressive insurance policy as the storage place wanted insurance. I got Progressive for 450 a year which was acceptable as a cost benefit ratio. Well just got notice it was canceled because it?s a conversion.
So. Any of you have ideas on who may insure a converted cargo trailer. I?m going to call a few places as I can but any tips appreciated.
