View Full Version : Laser genetics
Anyone have or tried one of these? Seems like it might be a low cost alternative to night vision scopes for up close

You know, I love to hunt coyotes. Almost as much as I like shooting prarie dogs. I would love to be able to hunt predators at night. If decent night vision scopes were not as expensive as a decent used pick up truck, I would buy one.
This product looks promising, but my concern is that since the beam is visible for up to three miles, I worry it would spook coyotes. Maybe not, but in my experience, yotes will bug out at the first sign of something alien to their environment. A bright green light after dark seems pretty alien to me...
Ironically, I have shot coyotes at night when I caught them getting into the hen house. In both cases, when I put a light on them, they froze for a couple seconds. Both coyotes taken after dark were with a shotgun at less than 40 yards..
I tend to agree, I also think the green light might be an unnatural distraction, even with the aid of electronic calls. From what I've read so far, it seems the jury is still out on this item. In addition the company still does not have a scope mount for 30 MM tubes.

I have also been considering picking one up.
Biggest complaint I have heard is that is does not work when cold.
I found a few brief reviews online.
Finally a dark night. Called up two dogs pretty quick and the green light did not bother them. Good enough to identify coyote at 100 yards. I much prefer my 3 million candle power brinkman spotlight with red lens for finding eyes but that requires two people. Whoever said that 250 yards at midnight with one of these things was like 25 yards at noon wasn't using the nd3 I have. That might be true if you were looking at a fixed target and had it on its highest intensity but those dogs just wouldn't stand still so I could turn the dial on the light to make it more intense and keep them in my scope at the same time. I will be doing more research in the next couple of weeks but I certainly would not recommend that anyone rush right out and buy one. If $300 is no big deal go ahead and get one, they do work but not quite like the writeups portray. Imagine that. I will have mine at the rendezvous so you can see for yourself if you care to wait. I will have more info in the next couple of weeks and I will wait until tomorrow to go look for the dog. Didn't make a drop it right here shot and I'm not traipsing all over the pasture looking for it tonight. Tried that before, not worth it

And this one concerns me the most.
I am a dealer for the BSA Laser Genetics, and used to carry the ND3 and the ND5. I personally had 3 defective units in a row that I removed a surefire light from the top of one of guns and replaced it with the ND3. I was highly upset at the fact it failed, not once, twice, but 3 times. You had to know being made by BSA, but I thought I would give it a try. I since then had a customer bring one back for failure, and had to send it off for repair. I have since pulled every one of them from the shelf, and will no longer carry them. To all of you thinking about one, RETHINK IT. Stick with what works and do not deviate, as your night out might become ruined from faulty equipment that is brand new and not proven.
