Help Me Identify This Mini 14

Just aquired this Mini a couple days ago and had never seen this type of brake/ sight before and was wondering if you guys could help me out...


The brake and sight are all one solid piece.
Its a 181 series
The sight does have the protective "wings"
Post is painted red
It was purchased from an LEO per the guy I purchased it from

Could be an aftermarket one.. I put one on mine that had a muzzle brake attached.. It was way better than the stock Ruger sight..

that has to be it, they are almost identicle. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a weird model. Thanks guys!

Oh and if anyone has any trigger time with the mini, I would just like to know what your favorite "series" is, and possibly what the actual differences are/ things you need to look out for.

That's an aftermarket pin on muzzle brake. I had the flash suppressor version on a mini about 15 years ago. Made by the same company, but I'm not 100% sure if it was choate or not. Don't have enough trigger time on them to have a favorite series but they all tend to be overgassed pretty severely. If your brass is landing in the next zipcode as it often does, I might look hard at upgrading to some type of adjustable gas system. Also advise that you stay far away from pro-mag, the ruger mags run good but have a price to match, just be sure you give any aftermarket mags a good evaluation before stocking up on them. Beta is making a C mag for them now though for whatever that's worth to you. Enjoy it, they're great little rifles.

I don't know anything about Mini-14 "series", but I owned mine (before the tragic boating accident I had last summer where I lost all of my guns to the bottom of the lake) since August 1983. I've also shot the 2 that my dad used to have (I pray he still has one of them at least).

Yes, they are definitely overgassed. I often find some of my brass 10+ ft away.

The biggest problem I've had is (as someone already mentioned) finding mag's work right. Ruger mag's are definitely the best and they (and all retailers) know it and remind you of it in their sale pricce.

Finding an affordable after-market magazine that will lock in without binding, that is to remove, and feeds properly is always a chore.

But, as a child (okay, a teen) of the original A-Team TV series, having a Mini-14 to shoot is really cool!

I have 2 30rd promags for my mini and they fit and function perfect for me. I had to load them and unload them a few times so the spring was not so stiff but after leaving them with the full 30 rounds in for about a week they worked great. they did feed just fine but the last round would pop out of the action because the spring was so stiff.
