View Full Version : vehicle insurance
I switched my vehicles insurance to be the same as my homeowners 6 months ago. They had the best price...now all of a sudden it jumped up like $20 for the 6 month period. WTF!!!
I need to call them tomorrow, anybody got a clue why this happens?
Stuart?
nothing changed in the last 6 months...no tickets, no accidents, nothing.
Sucks was my first thought.... [Tooth]
After dealing with my agent yesterday, They all can take a long walk off a short pier...

Oh I agree....I would much rather not have to pay for insurance coverage at all. I think it is a total ripoff.
Did it change after you switched? Insurance companies change their rates at least twice a year. A change as small as only $20 per 6 months is probably just a rate change that affects everyone and has nothing to do with you. Insurance is a total ripoff, until you hop a curb into the front room of a street side cafe and are suddenly on the hook for the thousands of dollars it will take to repair their building, not to mention the business that they lost while everything was under construction.

Yeah, and after it's all done they'll drop you like a hot rock.
dont get me started... i had excellent rates (01 S2000, 92 Camry, 94 4Runner 100/300/100/500deductable = 13??/year). clean driving history. multicar and homeowners. got in 1 fender bender and got a ticket they raise my rates almost 50% ($2000/year).
so i am looking, stu send me your info so you can run a quote. it is still hard for me to find a company that can even match what i have now. just more upset that they don't have a accidents forgiveness policy. I've been with them for 6-7 years.
You're thinking of home owners Troubleco, they'll non-renew you for one claim I guess.
Also, it is illegal in Colorado for an insurance company to raise your rates if you make a claim (even an at fault accident) and they pay out less than $1,000. If you get into that same accident and they pay less than $1,000, but you get a ticket, then they can change your rate for the ticket.
My experience is with doing personal lines auto claims, but since I've come over to the agency side, I mostly do commercial insurance. Even though my claims experience is in personal lines, my agent experience isn't. Kwando, I'll send you my info as you are one of the very few people from HAI that I'm willing to get an auto quote for. Who are you with now anyway?

sounds good mister know it all![ROFL2]
I will give them a shout tomorrow and see what the deal is. i won't have a problem dropping them like a hot rock if they keep up this kind of BS.
Okay, but be prepared to drop a company like a hot rock once every year since they all do that.
Just got off the phone and see told me several things, but it basically came down to they gave me a new vehicle discount but since the vehicle is getting older (a whole 1 year old now), that my rate went up $20. She also mention inflation, the cost of business and they just go up.
For now it is fine, we will see what the rate goes to when I get married in June...better go down

No sir, my rates went up because we added another person to the insurance, lol. Her record was completely clean, never even run over a squirrel clean and it still jumped up quite a bit. Insurance is a ripoff all around. Mandatory taxing on unknown/supposed incidents.
On the other hand, I would probably be dead after my car wreck if I wasn't on my fathers insurance at the time....
Colorado has always been a little rediculous on insurance any way..
Several years ago (cough,,cough..) When I was at Ft. Campbell,, 1975 Camaro, I think it was about $34 a month to insure it.. Arrived back here 9 months later, for just about the same coverage,, it was almost twice as much..
Insurance is totally ridiculous, because I know that you guys have $100,000 laying around to pay for other people's damages.

I'm with you! I think the only way to understand and appreciate insurance is if you've worked in it, or have had it save your hide once.
What I never understand is twofold:
1. You get into a wreck, other guys fault, other guy doesn't have insurance. I'm still screwed on getting anything fixed... or if my insurance is happy enough to help my rates go through the roof.
2. insurance is means to be safe, blah, blah... want to do some work to the car to make it safer. Insurance won't help with car repair, etc....

No, I was saying Colorado was,, I do understand the necessary evil that insurance is..

That's because you don't understand insurance silly. :)
If some guy hits you, and he doesn't have insurance, there is no one to pay for your car. If you don't have collision insurance on your car, then you never had insurance, and of course your company isn't going to pay to fix your car, it wasn't ever insured. If you did have collision insurance, then of course they'd pay for your damages (minus your deductible) and your rates wouldn't go up because it wasn't your fault.
I don't understand what you are talking about in number 2.

I always laugh at The Hartford's three legged deer. In the more detailed pictures of it, instead of being able to see two legs, it just has a cock instead. So silly.

I don't understand it. I had some guy hit me once, I have "full coverage", he didn't have anything and didn't even speak english. Long story short: my car damage was greater or less (whichever one it is) than my deductible so I would have to pay for the fixing... no insurance help even though I pay for it every month, but rate still went up because now I had an accident on my record even though it wasn't my fault.
By number 2 I meant to say that insurance is there as a safety net, you pay into it every month never knowing if you'll need it. Well, my car transmission goes on the fritz and it'll cost x amount of dollars to fix. Insurance won't help out on regular car repairs... so I cna drive it and be not safe, or get it fixed and be safe. ... still not sure that makes sense. I'm not talking about using insurance for like adding chrome tail pipes or something, but actual mechanic fixes.... hope that makes sense...
Your rate shouldn't go up for a not at fault accident. You should probably call your agent and have them look into it.
Insurance is for unforeseeable accidents, not maintenance, that is why it will never cover repairs to vehicles.
HAHA... my transmission going out was unforseeable!
I understand though. I just don't think I like it.
If insurance paid for repairs, no one would be able to afford it and no one would make any effort to take car of their vehicles. Kind of like how health insurance works now.
oooh.... very good analogy. I hadn't thought of it like that....
It would also destroy the used vehicle market. Would you want to buy a used car when 9 out of every 10 used cars was treated like a rental car? I'd never change my oil again so I could have a new engine every 40k miles. I'd go through tires and clutches like underware also.
That is the point of deductibles as well. If you put a deductible limit, people are less likely to make claims for things that they should be paying for in the first place. Think of it like owning a home. When you own a house, you are supposed to save 1% of it's value every year in a saving account, so when your furnace or A/C goes out, you are prepared for it and have minimum down time. People should treat owning a car the same way but they don't (I sure as hell know I don't). Especially in an economy like this where people are just barely hanging on. The point is, if you squirreled away some money each month to pay for maintenance for your car, you'd be less likely to make a claim on your insurance, and depending on how much money you had saved, might even be able to take off your comprehensive coverage.

Really. that sucks. The lady told me when I got my quote that when we got married it should drop by about $100 every 6 months. hopefully that happens.
I will go with them another 6 months and see what it looks like...right now they also insure my home so I want to see what my home owners insurance would go up to if I keep the home insurance but switch vehicle insurance.
I understand why the insurance is there, my dad rolled his truck and got a new truck for nothing (truck was only 1 year old), my sister last year rolled her saturn vue in the mountains, she got more than she owed on it and bought a brand new one.
Hopefully I don't have to go through that. But looking back I just see the money and thousands of wasted dollars out of my pocket...you just never know when you will need it.

I'm running an insurance agency (please don't hate me for it) and I have warned several clients who switched about this tactic. Most of the online companies have a business plan to get you for one renewal. They lure you in with a teaser low rate so you will leave a company where you have built up longevity discounts then start to raise your rate at each renewal until you leave. Then they start the cycle over again.
From my experience it's best to pick someone you trust who will look after your interest and then stick with them. The worst I've seen are the elderly who go to Hartford with their AARP discount and then get their rate jacked in 6 months.

Sounds like I need one of you guys to hook me up with the COAR15 discount! [Beer]
Stu - I am with Travelers. But i know several people including you in the insurance business and my company paid out 14xx for the accident. I've received quotes at statefarm, allstate, farmers, and safeco... what company do you work for?
I don't work for any company. I can quote you with
Allied
Bristol West
Safeco
Travelers
Mendota
Progressive
The Hartford
I can't remember any more off the top of my head though.
I'll keep that in mind, also had a couple members IM me as well.
I am going to renew them for the next 6 months, I get married in June and then i will see what happens...they told me my rate should go down pretty good on my truck, if that doesn't happen I will be searching for auto insurance, and possibly home as well.
