They are going to get up to 30"s of snow. They just showed the Safeway store and the shelves were empty. They have been predicting this for a few days. But the stores were empty in 48 hours. The snow is just starting to fall and the city is shutting down. It just shows when shtf you wont be able to run down to safeway and get food.

I hope there is another mass snowball fight broken up by the police.

I hope there is another mass snowball fight and it's NOT broken up by the police.

If SHTF in DC you wont have any guns...isn't the law still just as bad as it used to be (if anyone has any updated info on the gun laws there let me know).

That city only needs a half inch to be completely shut down, I wonder what they are going to do now?

What I take from this is how quickly things will get very bad if a real
situation occurs. It would not take much for real disorder to set in.
Too many people out there are completely unprepared for anything
and that can be more dangerous than the event. I would not want
to be in DC on a good day.

See, by being here, you guys are WAY ahead of 98% of the population. If you've got your stuff squared away with even 2-3 weeks of food and water, and an alternate form of heat, you are way ahead already.

We do need to recognize the problem unprepared neighbors and even friends/relatives may present. You need to be VERY careful how you broach this subject to the unprepared, or else you come off as a tinhattted lunatic. Trust me on this. Fortunately, we have good, concrete examples we can point out thanks to the activities of the current administration. You can use the economy as a way to bring up the subject of the importance of being prepared, or how close some of the calls have been lately with the recent terrorist attacks. Or if you're not a fan of the last administration, you can bring up Katrina.

Trying to get your neighbors on board can be tricky, but I've heard of some people doing it under the guise (initially) of setting up a Neighborhood Watch program. You can start there, then bring up other eventualities. One guy I know personally has set up a radio net inside his neighborhood ( I believe they are using FRS or GMRS base stations and mobiles) and they actually have tests every week where they all check in on the radio. Anyway, it's kind of neat since when they take walks around the neighborhood, they carry the mobiles with them and then can call whoever is assigned to monitor their base station that night if something pops up. Anyway, that's just one example. One thing you do not want to do is advertise what you've got to just anyone. I'll start a thread about some ways to deal with the unprepared tomorrow.

I lived in Prince Georges County for 7 1/2 years of my AF career. They don't have the snow clearing capability for the amount of the streets there for large storms. It will take weeks to get most of the burbs open again. The majority of the population knows this and so clean out all the food before a big storm.

Also, they get at least one big storm every winter. High pressure systems will stall just off coast and cause a strong low pressure system to rotate back west after picking up moisture from the ocean and dump and dump and dump until the high pressure system moves out of the way.

Movement comes to a standstill. Ironically enough, the worst storm I went through while there was the only time I ever saw neighbors helping each other out. We got 2 feet in 3 days with that one. Biggest danger is all the trees. The snow snaps limbs and knocks down the power lines.

I will say the last one like that for me was when I lived in Denver in 86-87? I think the largest I have seen at My place here in the Springs was about 15"

OK, so they're getting some snow. This is one of the reasons that I like to have a couple week's worth of food around. It took me a couple years to make my wife (who grew up going to the store every day or two) understand that to me, a couple week's worth was rock bottom. After a snowstorm or two where we didn't have to go to the store as the mess was underway, she got it. When I was deployed for the war in '03 and we had the big blizzard, she had plenty in the house for the three days she was snowed in. What's that old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? LET IT SNOW, BABY!

(Preferably on a Monday night or early Tuesday!)

taught my fiance the same thing.

currently I want to get a generator though so in case the power goes out as well we can run a few items. we have some propane powered stuff in the basement, but not enough to really keep things going for a good week....guess I need to go to wal-mart....or I could just bring the grill inside[Luck]

Keep a bit of food [ROFL2] in the basement, just got the genny cutover installed with the new service panel. No more extension cords! Fridge, deep freeze, furnace, and exterior lights all on backup if needed. Also have the gas fireplace - just need more ammo.

I need to get off my butt and install my gen switchover setup. Right now I'd have to use an extension cord, and that just doesn't work well.

There was a decent snowstorm in 99 or late 98..... i forget, but I was one of the few driving around when the entire city of Norfolk was shut don and if you had duty, was the only people who had to get to the ship. The city, base and everything else was shut down for 2 or 4 days IIRC.

Just like another poster, I displayed my CO plates with pride and had extra opride those few days no one could do this or that because they suckd donkey dick in driving in 12" of snow. [Beer]

Back during the Blizzard of '97 here in the Springs, (like most) my neighborhood was buried. For some reason or another, no one seemed to be prepared for being homebound. After the second day, a few neighbors dug through a 6 ft drift in the road to let me get my Toyota 4Runner through so I could take all of them (I had 8 passengers I believe; maybe just 7) to the nearest open store to get bare essentials. I was just having fun being one of the very few cars on the road!

It is like a mini third world country IMO. things get too expensive, people can't afford food for their kids, or it is a lack of money management.

I get very annoyed around here at the ILLEGAL immigrants kids that get free or reduced lunch. that just plain out pisses me off.
