A relative today showed me a pistol that he says he has had for years (1950s-60s?). It is a Star 1911 9mm. It has the following on it:
B. Echeverria
Eibar-Espana S. A.
405052

Can anyone tell me if this is/was a good firearm. What is it valued at today? Anything else that I can tell him about it?

Thanks,
MtnWalker

Not sure about the quality or pricing of it, but found this on gunbroker.com

I just searched for "star 1911" and this was one of the results: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=156839042

It has the same writing on the side of it that you wrote out. Looks to be a spanish company.

Wow! The one I saw was much better taken care of. I'll see if I can get some pictures of it.

I've seen a few Stars around, but they never seem to be in very good condition; they all look like the one in the link. I also believe that it is a Spanish company.

Go here: http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg00-e.htm
and scroll down till you hit Spain on the left hand side and there are a few Stars in there.

Well, without more info I can't be sure as there were about 6 different models made. There were a bunch of Star 9mm 1911 pattern pistols imported years back, Star model A's and model Supers. I have one of these, I got it about 16 years ago from one of the import companies. It's a Star model Super, in 9mm Largo. That's a 9 x 23 cartridge, the 9mm Bayard and 9mm Bergmann are the same cartridge. These were Spanish Army pistols, patterned after a 1911 but the working parts are different. External extractor, pivoting trigger, and so on. Mine is in decent condition, not perfect but I do have the matching number magazine for it. It's a pleasant gun to shoot, and it's fairly accurate. There's also some info at http://www.9mmlargo.com/ including pictures of the various models. Also, they take down like a Beretta 92 or SIG. That small lever on the right side of the frame just above the trigger is the takedown lever. I think the guy on gunbroker is a little high on the price of his, but you never know. I'd place the value somewhere around $250, but if that one goes for near $400 I may sell mine!

These are great pistols and usuallly built like tanks.

I have a Star Megastar in .45 and just picked up a Firestar in .40 today for the wife.

The Megastar is very accurate, still have yet to shoot the Firestar but built just like the Megastar. I'll see if I can get a few pics up sometime if you're interested.

Here are some pics of the one I've been talking about. Also, he has only one magazine. Is there a particular one I should tell him to get, other than Star 1911 9mm?

That does look much nicer than any of the Stars I've seen in shops over the years.

I found out some more info. At www.star-firearms.com (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/www.star-firearms.com) a guy has a lot of info. I found out that this one in, indeed, 9mm parabellum, made in 1953, and the internals are almost the same as a standard 1911. He also has manuals. There is information in the pistol butt as shown below

that will help narrow down data for your pistol. This one is a model B. I think he got a decent pistol.
