I just got my deer hide back from Rocky Mountain Tanners (http://www.tanhides.com/) and they did a superb job on it. It's my first hide I have had turned into leather.

I see why you had to shoot him, Devil Eye!
At least he didn't blink. I hate when they do that.
So what are you going to do with that leather? Bathrobe or something? Apron? Deerskin eye cover so yo can sleep late on the weekends? New shift knob? Trampoline cover?

I haven't decided yet. I'd like a nice leather jacket, but I'm going to need a few more hides. A new shifting nob cover sounds pretty cool.
You should save a little to make a new bandanna so you don't look like such a thug wanna-be in your avatar. ;)

LOL...I knew I'd get a comment on that avatar eventually. Notice I'm wearing a tux in it, what thug do you know that wears a tux. Also when trying to look like a thug always remember gun safety first! I need a Tommy gun to make it work though.
I noticed as soon as you put it up, but was waiting to say something about it so I didn't seem like too much of an asshole. Also, you're wearing that T-shirt with a tux pattern on it. Isn't that what thugs wear? ;)
Okay, I'll leave you alone now. heh.

Picky picky...LOL...thugs wear really long white t-shirts to hide their pants that are falling off...btw you couldn't pick me out of a crowd because of my avatar, the same can't be said for you though hehehehehe
I've always wanted to shoot an idpa/ipsc match in a tux. How fun would that be?
that is awesome! what did that run you to get it done? I have always wanted an elk hide
of course it is pretty tough to get that done when they are 5 miles from camp and 5 miles from the nearest road...just the head and cape are enough for one guy to carry on an elk.

Yeah no kidding, I carried two elk hides over 5 miles of rough terrain. My elk head wasn't worth caring out, but I did take the antlers. I'm currently working on those two elk hides myself(first time, so the're not going to be as nice as the deer hide).
The deer hide cost me $72 to get it done. For an elk hide they charge $144 with hair off, and $244 with hair on.
How long do they usually take?

The place that I had them tanned at took about 4 months. The elk ones I have are preserved with salt and waiting for me to start working on them...I've been to busy to get around to it.

I haven't had one done for about 3 years (of course, I haven't harvested an animal inthat long either).
The last hide I had done (hair on) was an eld hide and it cost me $165 and took somewhere between 4 - 6 months to get it back.
I had it done through a place called Timberline Taxidermy here in Colo Spr. I say "through a place" because they prep the hide and send it out of state for the actual processing of the hide.

wow that isn't too bad. I would love to have an elk hide blanket or something, or make gloves out of them.
If I ever get an elk in a good enough location to save the hide I will give it a shot. I don't think I want to pack one out.
