From the editorial page:

"In 2007, a few high-profile violent crimes in Colorado and throughout the country led to a dramatic increase in concealed-carry permits. In Colorado that year, permit applications rose 50 percent; 87 percent in El Paso County.

The increase pleased Maketa, who told a Gazette reporter: “Actually, I wish it was a higher number, because I know from experience that offenders in the jail system tell me they avoid crimes against people because they know there is a very high concealed-carry rate” in El Paso County."

I don't know anything about the other guys running for the office yet, last time the blurb about the other candidate was that he was a strong supporter of CCW too. Hopefully all of them realize that it is a requirement for winning the election here.

Like you, I don't know near enough about the other candidates, but it's clear that Maketa gets it!

Maketa is a straight shooter. Spoke with him after he spoke at the PPFC meeting one time a while back.
He does "get it".
Good guy - he's got my support.

Well here is the jist of it:
Sheriff Maketa changes mind, says he'll run for a 3rd term
"Having been "inundated" with calls and e-mails and stopped on the street by people asking him to run for four more years, Maketa said he talked it over with his family during the weekend and changed his mind. The sheriff announced his decision to seek another term today following a snowy rally outside the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Bureau. (http://topics.gazette.com/El+Paso+County+Sheriff%27s+Office+Law+Enforcement+ Bureau/)"

Here is the initial article where he announces he won't run:

Now if the Country Sheriff's office would just come up with something a little better as far as the training requirement--having to be delivered by an NRA Instructor--we'd be all set. I find that really irritating, although I understand the desire to have some standard that's easily identified, even if arbitrary.

After seeing too many stupid things done with guns at Rampart Range, it honestly makes me a little nervous that anyone with a hunter's safety card can get a ccw permit.

Why? Anyone without any training can go to a store an purchase a firearm. The second amendment is a great thing. Personally I don't think you should have to have any training or even a permit to carry.

No shouldn't need training or a permit to carry... but if you don't know what the hell your doing your probably not going to be able to defend yourself in a high stress situation and you may injure a non threatening bystander. So required or not you should be properly trained.

Shirk is pretty pro 2A. He signs off on Form 1's and 4's without any issue. Plus he's got my vote to get more deputies on the road.
