View Full Version : Anyone on here a mail carrier?
I applied to be a fill mail carrier a while ago, and was selected, but passed due to working as an agent. Is a mail carrier a stable job? Desirable? It seems like now is a terrible time to try and be a mail carrier.
gotta watch them little dogs.... their MEAN..
I think I'm going to check out this job instead. I have a four year degree and it sounds interesting. Anyone have any insight?

Its well paying most times, there is no "action". 0132 is the job standard, most commonly called an Analyst. Its mostly research and compiling of information. You would work with others that collect the information. Those could be NCIS or Military intelligence.
Go for it.
I'm going to work on my resume right now.
There is this one as well, but I don't know if I would qualify for this. I am terrible at making resumes and tooting my own horn. Sounds like this link could be something to move into after you've spent some time in the first link.

The navy job would give you a nice head start for that job, but DIA is a weird place to navigate.

my dogs love to jump in the mail carriers truck, or UPS, fedex...they always think they are going for a ride![ROFL1]
I have been working on breaking them of that. if was funny as hell the first time two chicks from fedex showed up and they went full sprint in their direction, they got scared but the dogs went right by them straight into the truck![ROFL2]
Well, I applied for the first link, we'll see if I am contacted or not. I've run into some complaints about USAJobs doing searches. It sounds like people apply for jobs, only to find out that it was more of a feeler and the position was never available, etc, etc. Plus, the way that the application is set up, there are so many questions about being a veteran, that I really feel like I'm at a disadvantage for not having the honor.

I've applied to at least several hundred jobs on USAjobs.gov and NEVER heard back from a single one, not even a "we passed you up" email. I'm also finding that half of the times, when the job description is posted on usajobs I find I'm qualified. So I proceed to apply, only to find out the description on the actual dept's website and qualifications are different and I no longer qualify. Which is more annoying than not getting a response from the company.

I've gotten a couple of "we passed you up" emails... and one "sorry you took 4th... we only interview the top three". The rest were no replies.

Beware of the chinese delivery man then. He might just take them back and cross out two of the grocery list. [ROFL1]

I am a mail carrier and it was a very stable job...not so much any more...first, the post office is in a hiring freeze and wont be hiring any one for the foreseeable future...we lost over 5 billion last year due to shrinking mail volume. Second...we have a no lay off clause in our contract if you have 6 years or more of service...that will not be in the next contract which is up in 2012. We are also looking at serious wage and benefit cuts in the next contract as well. I have 16 years in the post office, with 20 more to go till I can retire, and my honest opinion is the post office like we know it will not be here for me to retire. That and I do not intend to stick around if my wages and benefits are cut...I waited 15 years to get an extra week of leave and our vacation time is one of the benefits on the chopping block along with my hard earned wages.
If you can find another fed job on usajobs then your better off there...especially with a degree...most of the jobs dont even care what your degree is, just as long as you have one.
Thank you for the insider insight. I'll keep looking. I doubt I'll hear back from the that link I posted, but we'll see.

no problem stuart....now after all I said, the job is still a good job, even if they cut some of the benefits and pay...compared to alot of jobs out there...especially if we retain alot of our overtime protections and such...(I just happen to have a fall back job, just in case.) so in a few years they will be rehiring again...it all depends on how many retire over the next few years....they have pretty much cut all the carrier jobs they can....just keep in mind, the carrier position is the ONLY position that will stay steady because the number of deliveries are growing each year, but clerks and mailhandlers are are slowly being fazed out....
