View Full Version : A "Complete" Collection
I know there is never a "complete" collection as the myriad of possibilities is quite endless. However, let's talk calibers and what you might think would be a complete collection. A list with your rational will be sufficient.
.22lr
9mm
.45 ACP
.357
12 ga
.223/5.56
.308
.338 Lapua
With those calibers, there wouldn't be anything in North America you couldn't kill correct?
Your thoughts?

There are probably lot of things .22 is not going to kill, I may be wrong though.
And you forgot 5.45 x39 on your list.

Correct, hence the other calibers. Why do you choose the 5.45x39?

I got one cheap and the ammo is cheap as hell. Though most is highly corrosive you can get ammo that is not as corrosive as some of the older Russian stock that seems to be in surplus.
I just added it to the list because I thought we were looking at a complete list? did I miss the point of this thread?? I'm a little scatter brained today!
[Eek3]
What is the purpose of the list? Is it just to have the most common commercially available ammo? Or to have enough calibers so that if your pistol shooting friend, hunting friend, trap shooting friend, or prairie dog friends call you at various times you'll be ready to hang out at a moments notice kind of thing?
Purpose of the thread is because I'm bored.... Lol.
I was thinking along the lines of common calibers that you can do anything with but wouldn't have to drag around 40 thousand different guns.

Yea, my AR is definitely not common in 5.45 x39. Mostly I see .223 AR's out there. But there are some AK's that are 5.45 x39 too. I got one cause it was under $1000.00 and the rounds are uber cheap. I got a tin of 1000 rounds for $150 (I think, may have been more like $180 still it was less than $200) I know it was cheap. I got it from the guy that used to own the gun store up in Bailey CO. I took his CCW class too, great guy! I think he's on the forums but I forget his screen name. His class was awesome but I'm sad his store is gone!

I had had to choose and keep it some what limited this is what I'd have.
22lr semi auto rimfire rifle
22lr rimfire pistol
9mm centerfire pistol
12 ga shotgun
.223/5.56 semi auto centerfire rifle
30-06 bolt action rifle
What I actually have is way beyond that. :D

I don't think calibers define a collection, I think firearm types do.
What I think would be a complete collection is:
-pocket pistol (.22 or .380 .38 Spcl)
-Compact semi auto handgun (9mm, .40, .45, .357 SIG)
-Large frame revolver (.357 Mag, .44)
-Large semi auto (.40, .45, .357SIG, 10mm)
-Light Tactical Carbine (5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39)(SBR)
-Heavy Tactical Carbine (.308, 6.8SPC)
-Sub Machine Gun (pistol cartridges)
-Plinking Rifle (.22)
-Hunting/Bolt rifle (.308, 30-06, ...?)
-Light Sniper Rifle (.338 LM, .408 Chey Tac)
-Heavy Sniper Rifle (.50 BMG, .416 Barrett)
-Small pump shotgun (12GA)
-Long hunting shotgun (12GA)
I think that's about all you'll need.
my list[Coffee]
.22lr rifle
.22lr pistol
380 concealable pistol
9mm pistol (concealable)
45 pistol (1911 and concealable)
44 mag for wilderness protection (could substitute 500 S&W!!!)
5.56x45 AR platform
7.62x51 bolt gun (although I would prefer 300 win mag but 7.62 is more popular to find ammo)
50 BMG for very long range and taking down large animals...you never know how many people you might have to feed
12 gauge pump shotgun for protection and bird hunting etc.

I like this idea. but there is nothing in north america you can't kill with a good .22 but here is my list.
My .223 Ar with a wide variety of bullets and grain weight nothing it will not take care of.
A 308 bolt action for the very common caliber and those pesky shots past what My Ar. is capable of (past 800 yards on things bigger than people)
My .45 cal 1911 I think it is just a great all around round for dear sized game both four and two legged.
My 12ga shotgun for our flying and two legged friends that are within 50 yards.
And a .22lr for the fact I can fairly quietly dispose of and eat smaller game without having to break the bank and I can fit five hundred plus rounds in pockets or pouches without really weighing me down. I am also comfy using it on dear sized game within 75 or so yards.
Just my thoughts on the matter.[Beer]

I think this whole thread in in the wrong place.
This area is for alternate calibers AR-15's- does this need to be moved?
Most of those posted by the original thread won't even work in the AR-15 platform
Now it has taken a turn and listing all the cool guns you think you should have??
If it needs to be moved, feel free. Why do a lot of people want both a .22 rifle and pistol?
Hell why not.
Kel Tec PMR 30. .22WMR
Ruger 10/22 .22LR
Sig P220 or 1911 .45
AK variant 7.62x39
Saiga (converted of course) .308/7.62x51
Pump shotty or Saiga 12 12guage
Rem 700 30-06
And ammo you can swim in for all of the above.
No really I'm just kidding. This is all just a dream. I own no guns, I'm too broke.

the 22, 9mm and .223 do work on my AR platform. so does 5.45x39
i'm a 1) handgun 1) shotgun and 1) long gun per household member

.45 ACP works on it too. Along with some like .223 WSSM, .243 WSSM, .25 WSSM, and more.
I couldn't do 1 per household member. I couldn't limit myself that way![ROFL1]
I figure a complete collection is what you have in the safe(s) when you die!

But if I had to play i guess
22lr lever action fun/cheap/varmints
9mm semi auto pistol small enough to conceal
44 mag revolver for bears!
12 ga for birds
30-06 or 308 for deer/elk w/e

Why not? Do you have any rimfire rifles?
None. I grew up shooting it but it just doesn't do anything for me anymore.
The point isn't to limit or only be able to have certain types of guns etc. Belive me, I would own every single firearm in production if I could. However, I was asking what our definition of a complete collection (enough calibers, etc to do almost anything including competition/hunting/plinking/etc) but small emough that a "poor" (subjective, I know) person might be able to acquire the caliber/firearms and partake in the festivities.
Rifles
.22LR
5.56x45
7.62x51
Handguns
.38Special
9x19
.45ACP
Shotguns
12 gauge
I got rid of .30-06, .40S&W, 7.62x39 as I had no real use for them.

not bashing just and honest question, you wouldn't get a kick out of a suppressed .22 just for entertainment?
1 of everything, cause you can never have enough....

I won't ever pass an oppertunity to shoot something new. After messing with large bore guns, don't take it the wrong way since it's just my opinion but the .22lr just feels lame.

and there are some of us who due to physical limits or past injuries are unable to shoot larger bore firearms, not accurately for extended periods of time.
You forgot the mighty 45/70.[Coffee] I love shootin the 22lr, I have 3 pistols and 4 rifles in 22lr. My farorite rifle is an 1892 32-20 with tang sight. It has no recoil just like a 22 but a bigger bullet.

I like my .22's! But I also like my Winchester 1886 .45-70, and my AR in .458 SOCOM! (Never know when that rogue bulldozer is gonna sneak up on you....)
My GP gun is a .308, though.
