Has anyone taken the CCW classes at the Tanner gun show? If so what did you think?

Where do they hold the live fire portion?

It's a very basic minimal requirement class with no live fire. Good if you know your stuff, but not so good if you really need training. They just skim through the laws and give you a certificate.

actually they do hold a live fire...the live fire is in the evening, says its located at 38th and wadsworth. Live fire is mandatory to get certificate
Live fire is mandatory to get certificate
When did that happen? Must have been after 2007 sometime??
He must mean mandatory to get a certificate through that particular class.

yes, I apologize, its mandatory for the class, not the actual permit...sorry for the confusion

Or if you live in Adams County at least that is what everyone is telling me.

I just applied in Adams County and the guy asked me if there was live fire in my class. I told him "no" (because he said he was familiar with that instructor anyway). He mentioned that he didn't think it was a big deal because I was telling him that I shot IDPA as well. I was/am nervous about if they will make a stink about that or not, but it doesn't seem like it so far. I'll be sure to post my full experience when the time comes.

I took a class at the tanner gun show last year. The guy that is running the class is name rob, an ex cop, he really a nice guy. THe class is only 4hr long, Three in the class and one at the range, the range we went to is silver bullet in wheatrige, getto ass range. They made you shoot a 22lr pistol and you had to hit the target, grouping dose not matter, they just want to know that you can shoot strate, they dont want to give a blind guy his ccw, you know what i mean. THe class is OK if you dont have alot of time like other people do, like them other classes that are a 30hr classes. THey just go over the basic on the ccw and some laws. They dont teach you how to holster draw or any run and gun stuff like other classes do. I think I pay $150 for the class, If you dont have time to take a real ccw class then this is the one for you, If you want to go over all the ccw stuff and teach you about the laws then i think you should take a real class not saying that the tanner one is not the real deal. One of my buddy took a real class and he told me that at the range they made him shoot and hit the bulleyes, and if you dont they will fail you.
My 2 cents

Im sorry but I have the hardest time reading your posts. Is your keyboard messed up or are you really that bad with grammer....my head hurts now.
Like Tbaby303 said, its a quick class to pretty much get your certificate for the permit. I went a different route and took a private 10hr class. I like to learn rather than scramble through a class!
I've noticed that tbaby has been making an effort to proof read his posts lately though. Good job tbaby, and thanks for the extra effort.
I've always wondered if I could pass the qualification of one of those CCW classes that make you qualify. I'm not as good of a shot as I'd like to be, but I'm not so bad that I'd consistently miss a man sized target at 20 yards.
Sure anyone can qualify. The shooting test is so that the instructor can see that you can charge, shoot and discharge a firearm correctly!
More to the point: State law does NOT require live fire AT ALL. County Sheriffs that try to add a live fire requirement will rapidly find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit. Adams "strongly recommends" live fire, but they cannot require it.

I appreciate the responses...I have signed up for it for this sunday....it was 125 bucks. I wanted to do the profire to be honest with you, but I am under a time crunch...this one happened to work for me because the class and live fire were on the same day. I have to get my application into the jefferson county office by the 25th or I wont have my permit when I go on vacation. I do plan on taking more extensive classes, especially those by profire, but that will have to wait till I get back from vacation at the end of June. Again thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I took the class @ Tanner in January. It is a VERY basic firearms class with a sampling of "America". There was a brief live fire section at the Silverbullet on 38th. You just had to "hit" the target at about 10 feet. You're given 2 magazines, 1 of 5 rounds and 1 of 10 rounds. The handgun is a basic Ruger .22 and believe it or not there were many who failed to put but 1 or 2 rounds on target. To toot my own horn I had 2 nice groupings as the light was so bad I couldn't see the sights at all. I told the instructor and just said to myself "Point shoot Dave!" Can't even see where you're hitting until they pull in the target.
To summarize it was an OK basic course but should NOT be considered a license to carry.
IMO: You need a good 50 more hours of training before you should ever consider carrying a firearm concealed. Practice after the kids are asleep "dry-firing" in front of a mirror. Practice a smooth draw with your weak hand in a safe place (DON'T COVER YOURSELF!). Read some books on Modified Weaver stance and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
Side note: when I sat down in the conference room and looked around I could tell there were people there with tons of experience and people with NO experience. There was a person in the class who not only has never shot before, but had already purchased their 1st firearm at the gunshow 20 minutes before the class, sort of freaked me out a bit, and honestly I was a bit nervous thinking that I'm going to be on a firing line with him. Luckily they have 2 instructors and utilize 2 lanes at the range so there's a qualified NRA Officer standing right behind the newbies.
73 days to go.....

I appreciate the info, but I am of the mindset that we should not even have to be licensed to carry.....its a part of our constitutional right to bear arms...requiring people to jump thru hoops to get a license is just a form of gun control.
I agree, which is why I disagree with people who are in favor of Front Sight style training for CCW. So what if half the people in the class are total n00bs? They have as much right to keep and bear as any of the rest of us with at least a couple $600, 3-day, 1000 round courses under our belts.

Extensive training should not be a requirement, but is still a good idea, IMO. The responsibility of carrying is too great to not train for as many eventual scenarios as possible. If you make a mistake, it could cost a life, even your own.
I don't know how to fist fight very well, but you can be damn certain that I'm not going to let some asshole smell and touch my bitch's hair...unlawfully...without giving it a try.

Well of course it's a good idea. No one anywhere has ever said it's not
well ok, I'm sure somewhere someone has said it, but I'm not

I took that class last year also. WASTE of time. Yes, the instructors were nice, but they spent as much time pimping their goods for sale than actually talking about CCW. If you don't need to know anything about guns, just want to get through with your CCW requirement, this is the class for you.
IMHO, this is the kind of thing that gives anti-gun nuts something to shout about. Not that I'm an expert of any sort, but some of the people who went through that class and got "certified" should NOT be carrying a weapon. If we're going to have a program to help ensure that people excercising their 2nd ammendment rights are somewhat "qualified", then there should be a more credible training program. If we're going to do it, let's do it right.
Ooops, went on a rant. Sorry.

If you are looking to save time and money by taking the gun show class you should check out THEPDI.org. When I took it the class was only $75.00 and three hours long.
There were no tips on how to get your Pert sniff fix, but if you email Dan ahead of time I'm sure he could work it in.

I'm a huge advocate of VOLUNTARY training and strongly against MANDATORY training required by the government...at any level. And I make a living teaching CCW classes.
AK and VT have the right idea. WY is on the verge of passing similar legislation. If you're a law abiding person you'll have the right to carry to defend yourself with no permit needed. A permit will be available to WY residents under the proposed legislation for carry in reciprocal states.
Does that mean that those assholes in Wyoming will start accepting CO CCW permits again then?

That proposed change by the WY AG was never put into effect. WY still honors all the permits they did before.
Oh cool, thanks. Sorry Wyoming, you're not assholes, just windy.

I also turned mine into Jeffco, on Feb 2nd and the lady there also told me it would take the full 90. While I was filling out the info sheet for the fingerprints another guy showed up to pick his up, I asked him how long he had waited, he said around a month. So the lady probably tells everyone that so people are not coming in and bugging, who knows, I hope they dont wait the 90 days though.
