If you haven't heard, here's the story: http://www.gazette.com/articles/county-94110-range-shooting.html
At first I was a little torn, thinking a nice public range so close to my house would be cool, but then I started thinking:
I know of the area that the county wants to build the range on, and unfortunatley, I live there. Myself, along with many others in the area have purchased new homes behind the Pikes Peak International Raceway.. (http://topics.gazette.com/Pikes+Peak+International+Raceway/) We moved out here knowing full well that Fort Carson's bombing range was a scant few miles to the west, however, the county had purchased land between Ft carson and us, to use as a buffer zone. Now that Rampart is to remain closed, and because they have caught wind of some of the home owners occasionally going out to said buffer zone and doing a little target practice, they want a piece of the pie, and decided they want to build a range there.
WHich we DO NOT NEED OR WANT. We moved out here to get away from the city, not to have 40,000+ people a year drive down our streets (which btw, is the only access to said property), and we certainly don't want that nice area turning into another Rampart Range trash dump. Myself, and a few other home owners here, do occasionally shoot back there, but we always take out trash with us, and take great care not to damage the area (we made a makeshift range on a hillside, facing AWAY from the housing development). As of yesterday, I assume some county asshat, went back there and took ALL of our stuff, I.E., the nice range table that I built (they smashed it into pieces) Took all of our hay bales and targets, and other things. (It was not crapily thrown about, we had a nice target range, 25, 50, and 100 yds)
I suppose I can't complain since it's technically county owned property, but we have been doing this for years now, and now all of a sudden the county morons want a piece of the pie. Kiss my little secret goodbye I suppose.
I guess it was only a matter of time before they figured out we had a nice little semi-private gun range down here. I understand the need for a public gun range, but they just need to re-open Rampart and pay someone to police it. Either that or open one up in that wasteland property they have out east, where there's no homes.
Is the local city dump in a location that it would be reasonable to suggest they set up a small range there, instead of turning the forest into a dump?

[Cry] I bet you bitch when you can hear the track from your house too...
Hmm, that sounds like a shitty situation either way.
I wish they would start listening and re-open rampart. if they are going to go forward with this, then do what you can to make signs and whatnot to make sure the place stays clean and keeps the thugs out.

I can definitely see why this information is bittersweet for you.

Did you even read his complaint?

I am thinking not.
It would be nice if the city and fort carson could workout a partnership and put together a range just inside of carson. I am sure with all the red tape and "security risk" this will never happen but its an idea.

For what it's worth, Pueblo West Sportsmans Park is only a few miles south. Behind the berms is either Fort Carson or Walker Ranch and then Ft. Carson.

[Rant1]When did they close Rampart?
When that guy died after being shot in the chest last year...

I guess, I should've seen that coming. There were a few times that I chose to leave, due to the fact that there were a lot of unsafe people in the firing lane.

If this is ran anyway like Range 1 is ran, you'd never want to shoot there.

If you are referring to the POW range on Ft Carson, I beg to disagree....

Eat shit Noob. I actually like the racetrack. However, we didn't move here to have a million people drive up and down our streets every day. I understand the need for a public range, but as the saying goes, not in my backyard.

Update as well, my father, who devloped this area, got an email reply back from the county commissioner, and this is what he had to say:
Mr. Wolfe
Thank you for your comments regarding the proposed shooting range in the buffer zone next to Fort Carson’s live fire area. It was unfortunate that this was reported before we had the time to sort out all the issues as this is just one site under consideration, each with its own set of issues but none have been fully studied. The county would maintain any road into a shooting range should one ever be constructed. As you are aware this development predates any modern sub development standards and there is nothing the county can do to require adequate roads but it is a shame homes are allowed to be built with no proper road maintenance plan in place either private or public and as a long time realtor/builder in this area you know the road situation better than most. The county will be happy to take over maintenance of any road in unincorporated El Paso County as soon as it is brought up to county specs. I did not look up your particular home on the Assessor’s web site but I did pull up one of the stick built/stucco homes in Pioneer Village and found that it paid less than $5 in Road and Bridge fees and less than $87 into the general county for the other services required to be funded by state statute such as Sheriff, DA, Coroner, Treasure, DHS and the list goes on. As I am sure you are aware the bulk of our property taxes goes to the local school district.
I don’t know if you meant 40,000 trips or really believe there would be 400,000 trips a year but even the low number far exceeds what the traffic would be at a shooting range. When and if a site is selected it will be after a public process including neighborhood meetings, the range will be manned and maintained. The funding is yet to be worked out but we are committed to not using taxpayer dollars to either build or operate the range.
The Army has worked with us to provide contiguous property so the county would have the ability to find meaningful use for the land it owns in the buffer zone. While the property may remain open space the only commitment that has been made is to not use the land in a way that would interfere with Fort Carson’s training which is why we are working with command staff at Fort Carson on any proposed activity within the buffer zone.
Again thank you for commenting on the proposed shooting range. Should this site receive serious consideration we will do our best to address your concerns as well as those that live in the area.
Dennis Hisey
Commissioner Dist 4.

You did realize he's been a member of this board for a year and 3 months longer than you right? Sorry, the noob comments to someone with more time on the board always makes me grin.

If that's so, he's a lurker with his whole 17 posts. Never says a damn thing, but then tries to insult me with the few words he speaks? Fuck that, just don't say anything if you don't have anything to contribute.
Aparently he's good at that.

I think you need to let it go.
you're pissed because the county is going to do what it wants with the land it controls and you are losing your secret shooting spot.
from the letter it looks like there are a few options so no point in getting worked up when a final location hasn't been picked. But I bet they lean toward this one as it will cause the least amount of noise problems be so close to the base and in the buffer zone where small arms fire won't be a large factor.
It sounds like they are really thinking this through and if they do pick that location it will be manned, high quality and won't have trash there in no time that you will ultimately get pissed about later down the road.
the traffic will probably moderately suck only on the weekends and even then I doubt it will be the huge number you are proposing.
In the end, no point in getting worked up until the final location is picked.

Oh I agree with that. Just the noob comment made me chuckle.

I would be thrilled....if I actually believed any of that would happen. You know as well as I that it will more than likely just turn into another Rampart trash dump. Cause you know, the county had such a good record with that one.
Oh, and FWIW, whu can't the just build a god damn indoor range? I'd gladly support at tax payer funded initiiative to supprt that, and would pay a small nominal fee to use it. I WAS a member of Whistling Pines, but I couldn't afford that anymore, it got way too expensive.
It's not the Range noise or saftey issue I would be concerned with. IT's a bunch of wiggers with junky Romaks that think they're cool bumpfiring in all directions. (I've seen this several times at Rampart)
