I've been watching the Magpul Art of the Tactical Carbine DVD (pretty good to anyone who hasn't seen it)
But I was wondering, what is this device Christ Costa is running on top of his AR?
My first guess was a laser... but why would you have a laser and a red dot?

Lasers are only good at like 25 feet in day light.

Uh, no... I can see the TL-3 laser on my G35 on a 50 yd target in the middle of the day. The more power, the easier and farther you can see it.
The APTIAL is primarily made for night combat with a PVS-14. The PVS-14 and Aimpoint M-2 combo is a nice idea, but sucks ass in reality. Looking over the top or to the side of the M-2 at a big bright glowing dot on your target with a PVS-14 is fast, accurate, and terminal for the other guy. AND... really helps out the air cover put big nasties on target.
I believe it's one of the (many) variants of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/PEQ-2
These types of devices seem to have many possible configurations depending on the model, but these are what I've seen available:
* Visible red light laser
* Visible green light laser
* IR laser
* IR illuminator

Picture yourself in the middle of the An Nasiriah, Iraq city residental area. It's 0200 and you are standing guard on the back side of the block that surrounded by Iraqi and US troops. The Special Ops are about to blow open the gate and front door to a house occupied with known insurgents in it. They have been funded, equipped, and trained by a foreign government to do nothing but cause problems and kill US troops.
It's still 95 degrees outside, you are sweating your balls off with 80 lbs of gear on. Not a single light is on for miles, there's no moon, and only starlight to see with. Every structure around you is two stories high, and Iraqi's live on their roofs in this heat because it's cooler than inside their houses. When the charge goes off everyone will be awake and watching. Someone may even decide to take offense to your actions and start shooting from the roof, the alley, the gate in front of you, or any one of the gates around you. The only way you can see anything is with your night vision goggle, PVS-14.
The first C-4 shape charge goes off and you know everyone is awake for miles now. The second charge goes off and the team is inside. Every Iraqi in the neighborhood is definately awake now and watching you any way they can. Does the guy on the roof have a gun? Does the guy looking out the gate have a gun? Is anyone squirting out of the target building? Shit, is that shooting? OK, here we go. Then brick around you starts fragging from impacts.
How expensive was that gismo? The one that's a combo IR flashlight and IR targeting laser that can only be seen with NVG's on so you can see it and they can't. Worth every penny.

True. But Chris Costa hasn't been involved in military operations for over 12 years....
So why does he need it on his Magpul Dynamics demonstration AR? haha.
I can't blame him though. If I had the spare cash and the access, I'd probably have one to.

Military and LE are their primary market. Showing capatibility with what's being used in the field and their equipment is essential. Showing their market they develop and test with the same mentality as their customer ensures trust in the purchase of their product.
plus since they cater to LE and military they are just spending YOUR tax dollars, so price is irrelevant. usefulness and sometimes the cool factor are what sell.

Laser at night, red dot during the day?
I had a peq-2 on my M4a1.. nice for night ops and signalling for extraction (IR only)
that's not Costa, it Travis. Just because the tool isn't used every time you shoot doesn't mean it's not necessary. How many of you have a light on your weapon system? Do you use it every time you go out shooting? I don't, but it is a tool I have to use and practice with. Why do I leave my IR lazer on my rifle when teaching civilians? Because it's on my prefered gun & its zeroed. Why remove something if you don't have to?
How long are we going to keep assuming the enemy doesn't have NVG?
To answer your question, when they start using it more. If we find more NODS on the bodies we search, then we need to adjust ourr tactics. For now, as much as I hate remaining stagnant, the methods & tactics work. There are new methods/technology being developed now, however the need has not been sufficient to release or use them (by every soldier). They do have and use NODs against us however they are not common and usually outdated/broken/insufficient.

Oops I meant to say 25 meters not 25 feet lol.
I still don't understand why there is an import ban on laser with more than 5 mw. I want something that will burn through plastic.
