Headstamp question

I picked up 1000 rounds of mil surplus .308 at a good price because it was slightly corroded. A little time in my Dillon Case Cleaner did wonders on most of it (I didn't have any polish cleaner to add to the grit but have some on order and will vibrate it some more). But here's my question - the head stamp on this ammo says "DAG93A0307". There's also a small stamped mark that looks like a "+" inside a circle. The bullets are silver colored. Does anybody know where this ammo was made and what type of bullet is used?

What you have is German, manufactured by Dynamit Nobel A-G (Hence the DAG). The "cross in a circle" stamp is just a NATO stamp, US military ammo has it too. I'm not certain, but other info I've seen has said these could have a 146 grain bullet. Also, I'm fairly sure these are berdan primed. I've seen other batches of German 90's production tarnished 7.62 for sale recently here and there also. Hope this helps.

yep, german, berdan primed...I think corrosive...can't remember on that one. just make sure you clean up your gun after shooting it.

good quality stuff though.

Non Corrosive. DAG also has a bi metialic jacket that is known to fragment. I can post some pictures tonight.

For the price I got it, Berdan primed isn't an issue - I was looking for cheap 308/7.62 for my FAL. Our club has one of the new Swage tools for converting them to Boxer primed. It's the silver colored bullet that has me curious.

BTW, as I said most of it cleaned up just being in the walnut shell media for an hour. As soon as my polishing additive arrives, I'll try it again and see if I can't get all of it bright and shiny.

Found it. It's 147 grain FMJBT NATO BALL, bullet jacket material is cupronickel and looks like silver. Currently $279/500 on ammoman.com.

Here is a thought on the jacket. As I understand the combination of the material and the cut in the canular was designed to get around the Geneva Convention. Germans being the inventive lot they are came up with the bi metallic cupronickel jacket.

Very effective on soft targets. ;)
