In order to take my sons with me shooting prairie dogs I have gotten two basic Marlin 917V rifles for them to shoot.
The first one I shortened the stock so they could shoulder it correctly.

Well even with the shortened stock my boys were having a hard time acquiring targets due to the low check weld.

I looked for a solution to raise the check weld but none were high enough so I made one.
Bought some 3/16" kydex
Cut a piece to 5x10.
Heated it up with a heat gun a molded it over the comb of the stock.

Sketched a basic saddle shape and used a belt sander to sand it down to form.

Cuts some slots in it, drilled holes in the stock, and secured with some carriage bolts and knobs. The black kydex didn't really go with the walnut stock so I painted the stock with Rustoleum green textured paint, it's actually a darker green than the photos show.

The knobs are a little bigger than I wanted but I didn't like the smaller ones I could find.

My older son can now use a standard sized stock but also needs a higher check weld so I did his too.

We have not been out since the mods yet but will be going very soon. Testing in the basement yields thumbs up and smiles from both of my boys.
