View Full Version : 2010 Colorado State IDPA Match?
I'm considering putting on a IDPA state match here this year, probably on the Western Slope. Would like to get aleast 75 shooters. Would consist of 10 to 15 stages, NO STANDARDS, NO LIMITED VICKERS STAGES, straight IDPA shooting. Please let me know if you would be interested in shooting or being an SO. Thanks.
Millers range in Montrose?
Could we get a little more info?
Possible location(s)
Date range
1 or 2 day shoot
I am going to be one of those who will not be able to commit until I know when and where due to work. If I can, I will work as a SO.

Possibly Montrose. As far as the dates, we were considering mid-August it would be a one day shoot, Saturday.
Plaques would be handed out for division winners, we would also have shirts and a lunch.

O.K. As of today we do have a confermation on the range. The match can be held in Montrose at the San Juan Shooting Range(Millers Range). Spoke today with him and have a verbal approval. Our plan is we would like to get atleast 75 verbal commitments to put this thing on. Colorado hasn't had a state match for a while and this one promises to be a solid challenging match. So please tell all your buddies.
Match Info:
Date: Either August 14th or 21st 2010. Both a Saturday.
10 to 15 challenging stages
$75.00 Entry Fee/Includes T Shirt
Awards per IDPA Rules
Possibly a couple of prize drawings (for sure for the SO's)
Side match either a BUG match or Plate Racks(fastest time for bragging rights!)
Working out something for a lunch.
Please pass the info along. If you are a CO IDPA shooter here is your chance to shoot a local major match. There is a poll on the other post please vote and support your IDPA. Thanks,
Greg Brose

I wouldn't recommend Aug 21st. The CO State USPSA Championship match is that weekend.

I'm in. Most likely I can come up with 2-3 others that would be in as well. Will this be the official info site or do you have a link to another site that we can get more info and stay up to day on things as they unfold.

Thanks Jason,
I will keep you posted here for now. I'll know more in a couple of weeks. Thanks.

Yes you do need to be a member and classified. Cover garment will be required. The match will be held at the San Juan Shooting Range in Montrose CO
Thanks for asking. We are trying to get atleast 75 verbals before we commit on having the match.

Thanks for doing that Hoser. I did make it confusing with two posts.

Just throwing this out there from a some large match experience to try to help out. You may have issues getting 75 verbals in making a determination if the match will happen or not. There are always about a dozen and a half late entries, and most of the IDPA shooters around here don't necessarily paruse this site. You might want to send out a feeler at the next Clear Creek IDPA match and go off of that info.

Your right. I was thinkin about this the last couple of days. I have emailed all the clubs in 6 states surrounding us. I think I will attend the next front range match and try to promote it. Thanks for the advice. I'm confident I can make this happen.

That leaves me out of the running....Have you considered joining (or are just not classified yet)? A one-year membership is about 1/2 the cost of gas to get to Montrose and back--unless you live there, of course. :)
I am curious about the venue--is it a matter of facilities (10-15 stages, for example) and equipment availability? I voted 'yes', but a full day of saddle time sure makes it difficult (and expensive).

The San Juan range in Montrose is a world class range.
I am hoping to make it but I might be in Afghanistan by then.
If the match does go, I am sure FR IDPA will run several classifiers to ensure plenty of people can get that squard filled.

I am sure FR IDPA will run several classifiers to ensure plenty of people can get that squard filled....and I know for a fact that just a handful of shooters can set up a classifier at Clear Creek in very short order. By the July local match, we should be able to do it blindfolded (while field-stripping a 1911).
I take it there's just nothing else around central CO that could support a State level match. That's too bad but oh well, a great excuse to get to Montrose.

Hoser is right, it's a world class range. It also has a campground/RV area. I know it was pretty cheap to stay I'll have to get the specifics. I would use any excuse I could to get over on the far western slopes when I could.
Montrose is nice.
the Miller range is a great facility have shot their a lot in the past.
couple of great places to eat. hot springs down the road,

...hot springs down the road,Well there you are...it's a done deal. Plus I just got a new press up and operational and the ammo is flying out of that machine.
I know it's early for details, but are you guys thinking a 1-day or 2-day shoot, and would ya be wantin' to set up stages on the Friday before? I have two 4 lb dogs, so LOTS of logistics to worry on this end. :) If I make it, I make for stage set up or any other work that needs to be done.
I am hoping to make it but I might be in Afghanistan by then.So who's your CO? I'll write a letter. Senior officers have always been very impressed when I write letters.
Oh wait, no. That was in a bad way. I think it was Gen Cromer at the time who said, "This brings your fitness for senior duty into serious question." Or some crap like that. Golly, talk about getting all teary eyed and peeing your pants. Anyway, the point is, Afghanistan will probably still be there long after we're all dead and gone, but a state match is pretty rare near as I can tell.
Bongo,
This will be a one day shoot. Right now we are scheduling Aug 14, we would set up on the 12th, SO's shoot on the 13th. I will know more in about a week. Thanks.

Things are looking real good for the match which is going to be held on Saturday, Aug. 14 2010. We have a lot of positve emails and phone calls from shooters and a great response from local area match directors. Action Pistol Group from Whitewater CO will be the sponsoring club and Paul Miller's San Juan Range will host the shoot. Today I met with Paul at the range and we have secured 10 bays and now we are looking at 13 stages. Greg Brose(GmanCDP) will be acting match director. Greg Brose has been a Match Director in Mississippi for 5 years. He has also worked as a CSO/SO for several other state matches. Greg and I want to put this match on to help promote IDPA in this region. We will have a web site/email along with application posted by the end of next week. Keep your eyes open.

Sounds good. I've blocked around those dates. Now to update my classification...
BTW, I've gone through Montrose a lot but never stayed there. Are there any campgrounds for RVs nearby?

Well, now that you mention it. There is RV parking and camping spots at the shooting range. There's room for I think 15 RV's. The range is an awesome place. I will get more info on the hookups/cost for you.
Thanks
G19man,
I was planning a trip to see some relatives in Grand Junction this summer; so I could plan around this match! I am in Laramie, WY and I shoot often with the Northern Colorado IDPA club. Just wondering if you've gotten ahold of anyone from that club--I'm sure there would be some interest.

I don't believe I have. I will put them on my list. We will have a site and application ready by the first of next week. Thanks for your interest.

...and just to highlight, about 70 shooters were classified in Clear Creek on Saturday, many I have to think for the first time. So surely at least a handful will sign up for Montrose.
Does anyone know if this means the match at Clear Creek on the 14th is cancelled or still on?

Most likely it *will* be a go as not everyone will be making the trek to Montrose.
Shooters,
We are proud to present to you the first annual Western Slope Regional hosted by BXST and Action Pistol Group. This is the first major IDPA match in Colorado since 2003. Thank you all for signing up and supporting the sport of IDPA. We have put together for you a safe, fun and CHALLENGING course of fire. There will be 13 stages for your shooting enjoyment. The actual round count for the match is 174 rounds. Please bring a minimum of 250 rounds for the match.
We have managed to put together an excellent prize table for you. Total value of prizes is over $3500. Prizes will be given out in a random drawing.
Lunch will be provided by local Boy Scout Troop 491 for a minimum donation of $5.00. There will be hamburgers, chips, beans and water. There will also be plenty of water on sight for you. Please show your support for these kids.
Our major match sponsor, MGM Steel, has provided us with an Attack Target for the match. We will be using the attack target as a side match, THE FASTEST GUN IN THE WEST. Cost to shoot this will be $2.00 per turn. All proceeds will go to support Boy Scout Troop 491. The side match will consist of two divisions Master/Expert and Sharpshooter/Marksmen/Novice. Winner of each division will receive a trophy and bragging rights as the fastest gun in the West!
Below you will find all match specifics. Please show up on time. The San Juan Shooting Range is a COLD RANGE. Please respect all rules of the range.

Just wanted to give a huge 'thank you' to Greg and all the many, many other folks who made this historic match a possibility in the first place, and a big success when it was all over with. I saw a few folks from the FRIDPA team there, and also met shooters from New Mexico, Alabama and Arizona.
I think we averaged about 9-10 shooters per squad, most of the bays had a single stage and a few with 2 stages...so things moved fairly quickly all things considered.
I believe 84 shooters in total showed, about 79 finished, and the weather could not have been more beautiful and accomodating. While my own shooting was downright horrifying, I finished my last two stages in very good form and so had a nice uplifting finish to ease the pain a bit.
To all of the SOs who volunteered from (relatively) near and from very far, another round of applause for running a safe match and a well-regulated one in terms of ensuring folks understood and adhered to the rules...without any unnecessary cruelty in the matter. A tough job, and one very well done.
