Self-Defense Reform Bill to be Heard on Monday, March 15
Please Contact the Members of the House Judiciary Committee Today!
An important pro-gun bill (House Bill 1094) will be heard by the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m.
Sponsored by State Representative Cory Gardner (R-63), HB1094 would extend Colorado's self-defense law to places of business. If passed, this legislation would permit all employees to defend themselves by any means of force, including deadly force, if they have reasonable belief that an intruder has committed, or intends to commit a crime, during unlawful entry. The exclusion of businesses in the current self-defense law has been a noticeable omission, which this bill would rectify.
Please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee TODAY and respectfully urge them to support HB1094. Contact information for the committee can be found below.

What would be nice is if they could write the law, so businesses couldn't take away our constitutional right to protect ourselves. So in my first job, carrying isn't such a big deal. But my second job is delivering pizza. You'd be surprised how many pizza delivery guys have been killed in the past year.
Nothing more fun than having to delivery in the ghetto fully knowing you will not get tipped, and knowing the chances of getting robbed jumped up greatly over the delivery to the nice neighborhood. Oh ya, but you can't carry your gun because we (Pizza Hut Domino's Papa Johns) are more worried about a lawsuit from a criminal, than we are for your life.

I couldn't disagree with you more. You're advocating for MORE government control of business. Here you're trying to say that you have the right to carry but a private citizen that is a business owner doesn't have the right to say what goes on in their place of business? I'm sorry but I'm all for less and less government intervention in business and if a business doesn't want guns in their store so be it. I will continue to let them know that they are making a bad choice but I'll stand up for their right to make that choice.
I use to carry a hammer in the bag when I delivered pizza. It fell out on some lady's porch one time. lol
Those private businesses can't stop you from carrying, only from working there. If I ever delivered pizza again, I definitely carry.

No I'm asking for government to force businesses to not take away an individuals right to defend themselves. They don't have to allow us to carry inside the store, but they shouldn't be able to force you to be unarmed in your own car, and outside while delivering pizza.
Pizza drivers stay outside on public areas like sidewalks, driveways, and front porch steps. And yes, walkways to a persons front door are considered public unless no trespassing signs are posted.
So yes I want the government to force businesses to follow the constitution.
You can be fired for absolutely any reason in Colorado. There are virtually zero protections for employees. Carrying a gun isn't a protected class and will not be defended by the government, nor should it.

Is it that hard to understand? We as individuals have the legal right to bare arms. A business shouldn't be able to make you not carry in your personal vehicle, and on public property while they put you at risk while doing your job. And on top of that, they make you have a lighted "rob me" sign on your car advertising that you have food and money.
While carrying a gun isn't a protected class, it is a constitutional right, and the government should defend your right to carry to protect oneself.
Just carry a gun then. I would. A private business should have to right to decide who represents them. If they want a bunch of victims, then let them. I'd take getting fired over defending myself any day. They'll fire you if you defend yourself and you aren't armed with a gun anyway. Most companies have strict (i.e. stupid) policies about just rolling over and playing victim.

You all may recall a member of this site who was fired from a major CO grocery chain a few months ago because he visited this grocery store after his work hours with a firearm.
While I think we are making inroads in re-establishing our right to carry across the state, the pervasive ignorance and fear of legal liability has resulted in a number of businesses taking a decidedly anti-gun stance.
There will always be those who will give the public a reason to point to firearms as the problem and to possess an irrational fear of guns themselves instead of the bad people who choose to do evil.
What we, as gun owners and Second Amendment advocates need to do is act as good stewards of representing firearms to the public. We need to get people to realize that guns are NOT the problem and, when they are in the hands of the right person.
Perhaps, eventually, the businesses who have the anti-firearm postions will slowly start to come around and allow their employees and customers to possess firearms.

Is this bill the "inroads"?
I was actually thinking about this thread on the way home tonight. I was thinking that since the company is paying you, then they can tell you to do whatever they want to earn that paycheck. Then of course I realized that there are many labor laws that protect employees from unsafe work standards. So I'm a little torn. It'd be nice to not have to worry about losing your job as long as what you were doing wasn't against the law. On the other hand, invite the government deeper into private business, and good luck trying to get it to leave.
