I was wondering who all has supplemented their firearms training with any kind of martial arts training? Myself, i've trained in several martial arts systems like Muay Thai, Filipino Kali/Escrima, Indonesian Silat and Jeet Kune Do. I prefer the Filipino arts as they are more encompassing and suit me better than anything else.
I did martial arts before my gun training... and before I was in my car wreck and now all fat. HAHA.

LOL. You don't have to be skinny to train. I think it all depends on what you're looking to accomplish. I've worked with disabled people, on crutches and in wheelchairs, and people with different health concerns such as MS and Diabetes. I'm not skinny myself. I've put on quite a few pounds throughout the years myself. If you're interested in "jackie chan" moves, then yeah, it helps to be in shape. If you're looking for simple techniques to immobilize or to get out of a corner, there are systems to address that also. [Beer]
I know friend... just trying to be pessimistic cause I'm getting older and can't move the way I used to.

Yes you can. I am mid 30's and can move the way I did as a youngster. Even after an mcl injury and truck wreck/rollover. Just starting Krav and BJJ after a lifetime of hockey, wrestling and boxing. We don't get older, we get better.
Lol.. no I CAN'T move the way I used to, not by my own volition. There are a few fused bones and other oddities in my body.

Current Brown Red belt Karate/Korean Taekwondo, haven't been active for several months... one of my favorite things is to work escrima sticks.
Never had any formal self defense training. never had time...always had a sport going on throughout the year while growing up. I can't even remember a summer where I basically did nothing

I took some for 4 years, I cleaned the place and got to go for free. It is called Kempo Not to be confused with Kendo (women beating each other with bambo poles)

No formal defense training except for the Navy and usage of subdueing people with pressure points. I have an extensive background in street fighting though[Tooth]

I've had a hodge-podge of stuff over the years. Karate, PPCT defensive training for LE, Akido, Iaido, Krav, MMA... Some day, I hope to get back into akido and iaido. Just no time or money for it right now.

Many, many years ago I had training. I've wanted to train in Akido and escrima sticks for a long time. Like others, no time, no money, and can't move like I used to (and things hurt a lot anymore).
Actually, I took tons of martial arts, and Kendo was one of the hardest one.
It is funny that some arrogant people talk down on other martial arts....

Akido....
I took KR version of Akido, called Hapkido.
I personally do not have enough physical confidence to use Akido for self defense.
That is where OC Pepper spray comes in handy. :D
How about Koga? I think Koga is more of apprehension technique derived from Akido than a martial art.

Through middle school until 21 (<----yeah, I'm blame it on the beer lol) I was into one thing or another. Middle school was Judo, and wrestling, and a year of boxing, highschool was both plus combat wrestling, roman greco, and jujitsu until I reached my 20's. Now it seems I'm too fat and lazy to get back into the gym, I have however been lifting again lately.

I agree. I don't have anything against any 1 system. I think they all have their good and bad.

after looking it up, I believe a friend of mine has done extensive work in the Kendo, and I don't mess with him. Not sure why someone would think it's lame.
I've had my butt handed to me several times in classes, usually by teenage girls. :) ha

I spent about 5 years training at several different arts, mostly Tang Soo Do and I have found that the art isn't as important as the dedication and work the indivual puts into it.

Am not making fun of it. Its hard, but if you go to Japan I think, its mostly women that pratice it. and they beat the crap out of you

I bet tons of Japanese Kendo people can kick my butt in Kendo. :)
I haven't yet to see 1 female in my class/team. Maybe because I took it at state university.
Of course our school was/were never in top 25 rank to compete with Cornell, nor Harvard. We would've got our @ss beaten down. hahaha
I've seen people going to ER, because they miss the tsuki (neck thrust).
We have more than one guy per week getting a bloody feet per 2hr session.
Even at 80deg with entire heavy bogu (armor), I get tired and fatigue after 45minute.
I got my Taekwondo 1dan by sleeping on the dojang (dojo), but I had to work my butt off to just to get into it.
Well, when I was young(in Highschool) , I thought Taekwondo was the best martial art.
After taking more martial arts, I think every single one has a benefit and disadvantages.
However, I would not say I "know" martial art enough to say I am good at it. Most of martial arts changes a lot after 2-3 degree blackbelt.
Just like 2nd deg blackbelt in Taekwondo is totally different than 4th deg.
