Gents,

I thought I would go to the source for a couple answers. Sorry this is long but I need to explain what I have and want for you to understand where I am coming. I would like to have a proper sling setup on my carbine. First off, I have a Bushmaster "AK-Shorty" that was made during the ban. It has a standard fixed AR rear stock, standard short front hand guards. The present sling attachment set up is stock for older AR platforms, a downward facing front sling loop and the same mounted in the rear stock. I have an Israeli 2 point sling which I do like. It is wide, comfortable and has the metal clip type connectors very similar to the old LBE clips found on the LBE suspenders etc. I aquired a set of the webbing/Velcro sling attachment contraptions which have a metal D ring facing up. Currently one of the webbing D ring rigs is on the front and I have the rear of the sling just clipped to the stock’s sling loop (facing down). I tried one of the webbing/Velcro D ring deals on the rear of the stock and did not like it at all. The webbing interfered with my cheek to stock weld and when I brought the rifle up to fire the sling always got in the way. Not very efficient or “tactical”. So that is what I had and have.
You probably will all scoff at me but I do tend to be kinda old school. My ARs do not have the picatiny front anything so I am left with fewer options. My thought is to get a sling adaptor from Brownell’s that mounts between the rear stock and receiver and allows a “mid-point” sling attachment. I do tend to like the 2 point sling attachment as compared to a single point. So now I hear about the Blue Force Gear “Universal Sling loop”. They sound like just the thing to replace the front webbing/Velcro deal for the front attachment point. So here are my questions: If I go with the Blue Force loop should I get a long loop to actually wrap around the metal hand guard cap, or go with the short loop and wrap it through the front sight or around the barrel? I prefer an uncluttered simple and sturdy set up. It seems the mid-point sling loops are very popular and functional, thoughts? I know there are some very personal preferences for slings/attachment and I know things have changed greatly since I carried an M16 for real over 20 years ago. I should probably ask too, should I forget the whole idea I have and go with something else? If so what and why? Thanks gents I appreciate your opinions and expertise.

This probably needs to be moved to the Sling section of the forums. Personally,

1)I wouldn't want anything touching my Barrel. So I would get one with a hand guard cap.

2)I had a mid-point sling on my M4 when I was in Iraq. about a week of patrols both mounted and dis-mounted, I took it off. and went with the GI-sling, with 550 cord. I found that mid-point slings are more trouble then they are worth as the one I had didn't position the Rifle where I wanted it. I might as well carried the rifle without a sling, with the midpoint on.

3)It really comes down to what you want to use the sling for. None of my Rifles have slings, because I dont have to hold them more then 20mins at a time. If your looking for a sling to stablize for shooting. This wouldn't be my sling of choice.
