Hey Everyone, I am going to the Tanner on Sunday, and I will be looking for one of these two rifles and I wanted to get peoples opinion. I have read up on both and I am weighing the pros and cons of both. This will be my first rifle, my very own first rifle. I am not new to shooting but I have never owned one and I am pretty excited about it. So any feedback is greatly appreciated, hope I am not opening a can of worms this being, an AR15 site, lol. So all you AR15 guys keep an open mind, thanks again everyone. [Coffee]

Given the choice between the two, I'd go with the socom - I looove mine! I think there are better options for the money you're going to pay on the Ruger as far as AR's are concerned. Honestly I'd jump on an AR (5.56) now and scratch some coin together for the socom later, it's nice to have both and I find myself shooting the AR a little more offten than the socom - it's cheaper and easier on the shoulder lol.

Squad Scout M1A, 18in barrel + it's cooler.[Beer] I'm not sold on the piston guns, (YET)

Be ready to spend some money on ammo if you go the socom route. 308win isn't as cheap as .223

Between these two, I'd have to go with the SOCOM. I like the piston aspect of the Ruger, but I don't like that they have done things like pin the fore-end on with roll pins. I also think the Rugers are overpriced. The socom will be more expensive to feed, but it'll also hit harder. Just a choice you'll have to make. BTW, you can get mags for the socom for around $21 from 44mag.com. You can also scope the socom about as easily as the AR, you'll just need to get the scope mount for it which are available from several sources.

m14 type rifles are the best in my opinion. Personally I would go with a scout due to the fact that it doesn't take a modified gas system.

Are they ever! Somehow Ruger think that their version of the AR is so much better than everyone elses. I ain't buyin it!

I think (given the simple choice options you've given us), I'd go with the SOCOM.

OK, does anyone else find it somewhat humorous that on an AR site, out of 6 responses, 5 said go for the M14 variant and 1 was sort of ambivalent about it???[ROFL1]

Yeah, sorta....but again, we are talking about the RUGER version of the AR...

Yep. I couldn't see myself ever wanting one over the SA. Or at all for that matter.

the socom would be my first choice...but I already have an AR or two!

ammo will be cheaper for the ruger...keep that in mind, and you can add all kinds of tacti-cool stuff to the ruger. An AR platform is awesome, and the ruger is a great gun, nice piston set up and a very nice looking rifle

Personally, I'm a full size M1A fan. While I love my Loaded model dearly, I'm just not a huge fan of the SOCOM. Thats just me. When it comes to my 7.62 carbine, I'm gonna have to look at a FAL; I think that the ergonomics would make it a better carbine. Perhaps the SOCOM would be a better carbine with an aftermarket stock, but those are pretty prices in they're own right.

I'm undecided about the Ruger. I recall someone breaking down the price though on parts, and from what I remember, you're actually getting a lot of gun for the money. Look at the rails, the sights, the piston, things like that.

What is 5.56 going for these days? I'm pretty sure that 7.62 is more, I just don't think it is a whole lot more. Thank God I reload!

I'd say really look at what you want the rifle to do. Honestly, I think you'd be hard pressed to do wrong with either one.

Ruger makes a great gun.... but IDK about their AR. I'd get the socom personally.... but I also have a few AR's already.

My thoughts exactly, for what you are getting with the Ruger it is a pretty good price, also, I really think they did a great job on this Gas Piston AR, by making the gas adjustable. The Socom is nice though, I like the hard hitting aspect of it, and it is a very nice platform. I appreciate everyones input though. I dont know if you any had read this article on the Ruger SR556 but it is a good read, check it out when you have time.

They are both great guns, I have the SOCOM II. I shoot the Ruger 10x as much. If I HAD to get rid of one, it would be the SOCOM. I had 5 AR's when I got the SR556, I'm down to just 2 now.
Hell, come down here and you can shoot mine before you spend your money, and then you will know which one to buy first.[Beer]

The socom is sweet but I think about the price of ammo every pull of the trigger and the price of mags. The ruger looks cool, but for the price am looking hard at the Stag Piston AR I think its called the 8 or something

Prices of mags aren't too different; CMI mags for $21. What are PMags these days? Just sayin'. I have no interest in paying $40 for USGI issue, when I can get CMI, which are new USGI issue. I could care less if it says TRW or W or whatever else is printed on them; just as long as they work.

These are some of my reloads. I called that one flyer but it kept on going....[ROFL2] 1 inch group @100yrds with a no NM modifications except a trigger job. Mags can be had for $20-25 and it packs one hell of a punch over the .22http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo267/brycom1/DSCN1433.jpg
