Whoa Stuart, you got lucky since you only had 15 min left. They say to get there early, but I think AC is pretty lenient anyway and are not all that busy. My uncle went and applied about 2 weeks ago and he said there was hardly anyone there when he went too.

I had to drive all the way up to Brighton from Wheat Ridge and left at like 3:20pm. I called about 15 times trying to get a hold of someone and make sure someone would be there. I eventually left a message. I was totally expecting to either completely miss them, or to get attitude for coming in with only 15 minutes left till 4:00pm. Instead, every one I spoke with was very nice. The guy who took my prints struck up polite conversation the whole time I was there, which was longer than usual since the computer didn't like my prints and we ended up going through the whole process two times.

How long did you have to wait anyway? Still whatever the going rate was for the county?

Support the cause of being ripped off to carry when it should be legal without a permit?

How long did you have to wait anyway? Still whatever the going rate was for the county?

My rationale was strength in numbers. I support legal CCW for everyone and felt I could add another name to the pile. The more WE are, the stronger WE are. ;)

Later, I realized its extra insurance if I switch departments or go on admin leave for a work issue, etc. At least I can still carry that way.

Mine is a JeffCo permit and I waited as long as everyone else. Had to donate $152.50 to Sheriff Mink's campaign fund as well. I did get to skip the CCW class though. Helps being a POST Firearms Instructor.

Irving
04-01-2010, 13:49

Still had to wait in line for prints and then I had to answer a million questions about why I wanted a CCW if I am a LEO, blah blah blah.

Pretty traumatic, actually, and now I'm on the grid!

My first day CCW I decided I needed some new shirts to hide the gun better. While putting on a new shirt, in the changing room, my gun fell on the floor[Bang] If somebody would have been in the next both they would have seen it. That was a frighting moment. I kept rehearsing what I will say if something like this happens. “Move along... Nothing to see here...”

In theaters Saturday, the gun kept “clacking” on the plastic arm rest. I was squirming a lot watching Avatar (what a liberal wet dream). CCW is definitely a learning experience and at times unconformable.

haha, once at a theatre there were a bunch of jerks talking way too much and too loudly behind me... in the middle of the movie I stood up and stretched (they saw the holster) and you could hear an audible gasp. I turned around ask politely asked them if they could keep it down. Didn't have any problems for the rest of the movie.

I know, I know. I could've gotten into trouble for brandishing/threatening, whatever/etc... It was funny to me.

Well, I figured I'd read the door before going in, and ask when I got there. Thank you very much for the tip. I'm going to feel very unsafe while I'm unarmed and surrounded by cops.

Also, I'm not positive on the price yet, but $25 for finger prints was thrown out there. What the hell is up with that? I should be able to just do the thing myself.

Why would you feel unsafe?

As to the prints, they need to be sent to CBI. A sworn person has to affirm that the prints taken match the name given. Around my parts, all of the money collected for fingerprinting goes to victim services and pays for child seats, stuffed animals, stickers, plastic badges, etc.

Irving
05-10-2010, 21:09
I was being sarcastic about feeling unsafe while being unarmed in the middle of a police station.

I see your point for the finger prints, in most cases. I don't think these prints are going to CBI, although I'm not sure. I have to submit prints with the application for this Texas resident license I'm getting. I've done the same thing for Wyoming, but apparently they don't share the data base and I have to do the prints again (hence the reason I assume they don't go through CBI).

Why are you getting these different state residence liscenes? Most of them do have reciprocity... Explain please Sir.

Mine is orginally from Texas, transfered to Wyoming during school, and now based in CO.

Irving
05-11-2010, 11:29
Texas has the most reciprocity. Colorado does not require a license to adjust claims.

When I worked auto claims, I did claim for Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Only Wyoming required a license, so that's what I had.

On a more on topic (to the thread) note, where do you guys carry your CCW card? I'd carry it in my wallet, but that would require putting my hands into my pockets to produce it, and I don't always have my wallet. I just went and bought a lanyard so I could wear it around my neck, under my shirt.

I assumed you were referring to CCW permits when we were talking. Print cards do go to CBI for CCW applications in Colorado, but you are obviously talking about something else. That is what I get for posting from my phone and being too lazy to read back a few pages!

If you think about it, it makes sense. If Joe Shit the Rag Man, a convicted felon, decides he wants employment as a (insert job here) which requires prints on file and lack of a criminal history, all he needs to do is roll off some prints fromwhoever, send them in on his $2 print card and he is G2G.

While you may be a law abiding responsible adult, not everyone is. This is designed to keep bad people out of positions they SHOULD NOT occupy, like LE, medical fields, insurance, etc.

Make sense?

Irving
05-11-2010, 17:21
Oh I agree Cochese, and that would be easy enough to do if they'd just make you submit to CBI or whatever. The electronic prints I took for the CCW were way better and will forever be in that data base. Instead, I had to pay $20 to get the prints, then $44.20 to have some other company look at them, then send me a receipt in the mail. Then I have to send the receipt in with my application and $50 for the application. Seems like a process built into the system to waste my time and line wallets to me.

Also, it seems like it'd be easy enough to fake a finger print card, then fill it out with info and bad prints on your own. I suppose most people aren't willing to go quite that far to get a job.

I set off my first alarm off yesterday. I went into our post office carrying a package and CCW. The alarm went off and I froze in shock, as I just realized why it went off. The workers just looked at me and said, “It's OK. Come on in.” They thought it was the package that sent the alarm off. Now on my way out, without the package to blame, I was trying to think of what I was going to do. Because I knew it wasn't the package that caused the metal detectors to go off. So, I just tried to walk confidently and when the alarms went off I just kept walking. Yikes, the HP station is right next door. But I kept reminding myself of what my CCW instructor told us, “The Post Office is not a government building and you can CCW there.”

I was at a party with some family recently, seeing how many stairs I could jump up at a time when my full size CZ came out of the holster and bounced down the stairs. That got people's attention. Good thing it was mostly just family. Talk about a party foul.

That same holster holds my M&P just fine, but when I put the CZ body on there, I can never get the tension correct, it's always either too tight to draw, or so loose the gun can fall out. Actually, it usually starts at too tight, then ends up at too loose.

I was under the impression that post office's were considered municiple building, therefore you could NOT carry in a post office.

Post Offices are Federal buildings -- and are definitely on the no-go list. You run the risk of breaking Federal firearms possession laws, not just muni or state laws... best to just leave it in the car there.

Cheers!

Congratulations to all that are waiting on their permits, and don't forget to do the MANDATORY "Wally Walk" and public restroom visit that is required within 48 hrs. of receiving your permits. [Beer]

Yes, the Wally Walk is mandatory.

If you really want to push your comfort level -- try your first walk in Whole Foods or, if you're like me and were coming home from Boulder, Sunflower Market!

Wal-Mart will feel like a piece of cake once you've braved the Gauntlet of Granola!

The more hippy of a place you go, the less likely someone will make you carrying a gun.

If you want a rush, carry into a bank WITHOUT your permit.

Go there and remind them that they are held to the laws they enforce and MUST follow the provisions of CRS 18-12-206. They, by law, MUST issue your permit immediately or have verifyable reasons not to.

(1) Within ninety days after the date of receipt of the items specified in section 18-12-205 (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpext.dll?f=FifLink&t=document-frame.htm&l=jump&iid=COCODE&d=18-12-205&sid=3e560e4d.76343909.0.0#JD_18-12-205), a sheriff shall:
(a) Approve the permit application and issue the permit; or
(b) Deny the permit application based solely on the ground that the applicant fails to qualify under the criteria listed in section 18-12-203 (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpext.dll?f=FifLink&t=document-frame.htm&l=jump&iid=COCODE&d=18-12-203&sid=3e560e4d.76343909.0.0#JD_18-12-203) (1) or that the applicant would be a danger as described in section 18-12-203 (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpext.dll?f=FifLink&t=document-frame.htm&l=jump&iid=COCODE&d=18-12-203&sid=3e560e4d.76343909.0.0#JD_18-12-203) (2). If the sheriff denies the permit application, he or she shall notify the applicant in writing, stating the grounds for denial and informing the applicant of the right to seek a second review of the application by the sheriff, to submit additional information for the record, and to seek judicial review pursuant to section 18-12-207 (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpext.dll?f=FifLink&t=document-frame.htm&l=jump&iid=COCODE&d=18-12-207&sid=3e560e4d.76343909.0.0#JD_18-12-207).
(2) If the sheriff does not receive the results of the fingerprint checks conducted by the bureau and by the federal bureau of investigation within ninety days after receiving a permit application, the sheriff shall determine whether to grant or deny the permit application without considering the fingerprint check information. If, upon receipt of the information, the sheriff finds that the permit was issued or denied erroneously, based on the criteria specified in section 18-12-203 (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpext.dll?f=FifLink&t=document-frame.htm&l=jump&iid=COCODE&d=18-12-203&sid=3e560e4d.76343909.0.0#JD_18-12-203) (1) and (2), the sheriff shall either revoke or issue the permit, whichever is appropriate

Yep, for real. IMO, if you know a gun is a POS you disclose that RIGHT UP FRONT!! I have no tolerance for people like that. I paid $350 for the gun, and sold it for $200 2 weeks later with FULL DISCLOSURE to the new owner, its only right.

Well, I called them last tuesday and the lady said that it had gone to the manager for approval on monday and that I should get the letter in a week or so. Bonus was that when I mentioned it was day 92 she said "that means nothing to me."

So, still not having gotten the letter on Friday I actually went down to the station. The cop at the window said without my letter I can't get my permit. I explained that I had called and they said it should be ready by now. He checked a little box and said it wasn't in there. I politely mentioned that the state law says they must issue in 90 days and that this was day 96 and he just shrugged and said they had a lack of resources.

Looks like I will be hitting triple digits since today is #99 no letter came in the mail.

Update: I left a message on the CCW hotline and then decided to call the Manager of Safety directly. She transferred me to the actual CCW office where I left yet another message to a particular detective. Hopefully one of those 2 messages leads to them getting back to me and issuing.

Also, to anyone in Denver, going down to the station on day 95 to pick it up before they send you the letter doesn't work; I tried it. Politely reminding them of the law just prompts them politely remind you they are short on resources.

Thats what they told me too... but mine only took 75 days! When she gave me mine she had a stack of them she had to sort through to find mine. Maybe I just got lucky.

Arapahoe took around 75 days when I got mine a couple years ago. I think it has more to do with the way they conduct the process than anything else. They were very friendly when I went in to turn in the paperwork, prints and the same when they called to say I could come pick it up.

Another thing everyone might want to think about - when I picked mine up they warned me to laminate it to keep the finish from wearing off, as it's all just printed on. I used some of that self-adhesive plastic sheet to protect mine, and it's worked well.

First Conceal Carry
Har Mart Asian Market in Aurora with a side of McDonald's

Momma needed Talapia, Mackerel and Rice.

On the way home I had the unfortunate instance to meet with Aurora PD after I hit a Christmas Tree rolling across 270 in high winds.
Destroyed the grill on the Blazer, minor/insignificant damage to radiator (I Hope)

After the Officer removed the tree from the road he came up and chatted.
I Voluntarily identified as he approached.

If it weren't for Bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Turned mine in to Denver today, finally. Det. Jones gave me some shit for having a copy of my certificate, and not a copy with original signature (I guess I didn't understand what that meant on the website) but she went ahead and processed anyway and gave me an envelope to put the original in and drop off at the front window.

Here comes the wait...wont be any different than the wait for me to have a free day to do this.

There is a Lao Market at 78th or 80th and Federal. I don't know how good it is, but it is sure a lot closer than Aurora.

Were you self conscious for your first time? Did you load up in the car in the police station parking lot?

Just got back from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's office.

They wouldn't process my application with my certificate from Front Sight, because it doesn't have an original signature.

I've written to Front Sight to see if they can get me a certificate with a signature. I don't anticipate they'll object to doing so, but it's just something for people to keep in mind.

Maybe I'll just print out my IDPA classifier results and submit that tomorrow instead. Anyone ever done it that way?

The guy doing applications was pretty gruff and unfriendly.

I'll update as the situation develops.

Edit:
Hell, I'm foing, this time with the IDPA classifier results.

Edit 2:
I had to talk to one of the deputies in charge of CCW permits, but my (IDPA classifier results from the national IDPA website + my IDPA ID card + a printout of an FRIDPA scoresheet) worked for the competition requirement. I don't know if a lesser combination or if a single one of the above would have worked, but they OKed the above. The gruff dude from earlier seemed friendlier when I came back - maybe he was just swamped this morning.

T-90 days.

DFBRews: When I was applying for the police and other government jobs, I had to find out where I lived the last 10 years. It was such a pain in the neck that I created a Google doc and keep it updated with all my info. MUCH easier to apply to government jobs now.

So...here's a PSA for everybody.

The CBI does not accept money orders older than 6 months. I received a call from Det. Deirdre Jones of the Denver CCW unit (great woman!) on Monday morning saying she received back my money order because it was 6 months and 2 days old.

Thanks CBI...so that afternoon I got a new one and made arrangements to drop it off with her this morning. CBI is full of surprises, the "rejection" form they sent along had all kinds of confusing stuff on it. Some boxes checked, others checked and then whited out, random stuff highlighted...real fun. So she had filled out two new fingerprint cards for me and re-did my prints just in case they had a problem with my originals but couldn't quite spit it out to tell me.
