Yes I am new this forum and too guns. I guess I have to explain why I want a gun. I am not into guns in the sporting sense. I want protection since I live in the city. It sucks not to feel safe especially in the parts of the city like Lodo area where you would think it would be safe. The thugs have taken over, and me and my girlfriend got beaten up, and being out numbered I couldn't really do much but take the beating. So my motivation is to find a hand gun for a good price.

Going out and buying a gun after getting beaten up is the wrong path man.

I've been jumped in Lodo as well.

Okay, maybe "wrong path" was a bad way to phrase it. I think maybe saying it is not the best place to start would have been better.

Welcome to the board. Have any immediate questions? Have you fired a gun before?

I have fired a rifle, shotgun, and a hand gun before in Oregon, that was when I was a lot younger. I didn't think a lot about guns before, and thought that it would be good to have stronger gun laws, but now I think I should be able to protect my self from thugs.

We all agree with you there. I'm just encouraging you to think about the big picture is all.

Don't let your anger at the situation get you so fired up that you are willing to pack heat all the time without a permit. You can say that you'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 (which is true), but the fact of the matter is that 99.99% of the time you spend carrying, you aren't going to be in a situation where you'd use it to defend yourself, so you're really just voluntarily putting yourself in a potentially bad position.

After I got jumped, I was pretty angry and entered a few fights I had no part in, and was generally more aggressive than I usually am. This lasted for a few months.

Welcome

Have you thought of mace/tear gas? Those things are a BLAST on thugs and won't get you put in jail or sued for man slaughter.

It's pretty funny seeing a street wanna be thug after they've been maced plus it doesn't ruin your evening with cops and statements and all

Welcome. Consider some martial arts training too, not the full blown black belt stuff, just a few classes over a few weekends or something to learn more defense and awareness. kickboxing class or something.

I avoid lodo just for all these stories you hear. I avoid denver too really, but i'm having to go back down there for work now... just have to pay attention.

Welcome.

Very sorry to hear about your situation.

While there are several non-lethal options available, if you choose to go the route of acquiring a firearm (handgun) for pesonal protection, I strongly encourage you to go the route of getting a Concealed Carry (CCW) permit.

Take a good class, preferably one where the instructor shows you samples of different types of handguns so you can find the best choice for you and your situation.

Once you have completed the class and submitted your permit request, get yourself the handgun you've chosen, then get to the range and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Without sufficient practice that firearm might actually be putting you and your girlfriend in harms way more than NOT having the firearm.

Bottom line though is that no weapon you can carry is as effective as the one on your shoulders - your brain! Maintain situational awareness and identify potential threats before you HAVE to react to them; avoiding them where you can. Even when you are confronted, you may not have to draw your weapon - at least not immediately. A member of this site (BigBear) had a situation recently where he proved this to be true - he used time, distance, a physical obstacle, and his voice against 3 muggers to evaluate other options. In the end he HAD to draw his weapon - but he never had to fire.

No matter what decision you come up with, good luck and (again), welcome to the site!

Welcome! What they're saying is true, a gun for personal protection is a good idea, but there's a LOT more to it. It's not a magic talisman, it's a tool that has to be learned how to be used properly, and you have to know the IMPROPER things about them too. You can't just own one, get a permit, and be prepared to fend off evil, there's a lot to learn. Protecting yourself and your lady is one thing, protecting yourself from lawsuits and prison time is VERY important too! Pull out a gun to protect yourself, and things can go downhill VERY quickly.

Besides, shooting for sport is very addictive. Do some practicing at a comfortable place, have a good time, and you'll be hooked too. Target shooting and hunting are two different things too, you don't have to kill anything to enjoy firearms.

Everybody here has offered some good advice...

My turn, just remember: "Two in the head and you know they're dead."

Flame suit on. HAHAHAHA.

Seriously, if you do buy a handgun, get a CCW permit.

Welcome.
