Right in front of Cherry Creek High School. He said I was doing 37 in a 25. He asked me for my license, registration and insurance. He went back to his car and came back with a good size piece of yellow paper and my paperwork he had collected. I thought I was getting a ticket for sure. He asked me if I had my weapon with me, I said yes. Then he asked me where it was and I told him it was in the console. I told him I had several rifles in the back seat because I was on my way to the shooting range at Cherry Creek State Park. He gets real serious and tells me I should watch my speed and says he is only giving me a warning ticket and it would have no points or fines. He said people drive way to fast in this school zone and he worries about one of the kids getting hit. I told him thanks for the break and he said have fun at the range.

What a cool LEO.

I wonder if my CCW is why he gave me a break in a school zone???

Good to hear.

Could be any number of reasons... probably because you were courteous and respectable?

That is awesome. Wish there were more out there like it.

Doubtful! At least in my experiance it hasn't appeared to help much. I've had a rough year and a half. 4 tickets from 09 to current. I've always been courteous, repsectful, advised them up front of the weapon, where its located and that I have no intention of reaching anywhere near it.

I should add though that I never expect to get a warning, but am usually hopeful.

first ticket I thought a warning could have been a good compromise.

Second I didn't expect for a warning, didn't hope for a warning, didn't deserve a warning. I will take what I got on that one.

third ticket, I got some slack cut but still walked away with a ticket. I don't feel the slack cut had anything to do with my CCW. Everything to do with my words and actions in the interaction with the sherrif.

fourth ticket - I think I definately deserved a break and a warning. Thats just my opinion. Further I will tell you that I got a direct compliment on having my CCW and that he though everyone should have them and actively carry. I agreed with him on that. Pretty cool guy aside from still writing the ticket.

KFinn, you should have screamed at him about how you pay his bills. I'm sure that would have helped.

Haha... umm yeah. I'm sure that would have worked. :-)

I should also tell them that the Insurance companies love me, even though they may say they don't, they do!

on top of the insurance company loving me and my taxes paying the officers! I also give them money via insurance companys for new equipement for speed detection which also results in more training days and time they don't have to do the daily grind. Wow.... why isn't this more of a Service industry serving me rather than me serving them??!?!?!?!?!

One advantage of getting old I guess. My last ticket was in 89. :)

Its pretty cool he let you off like that. School zones are one place we really need to watch how fast we are going. Kids dont pay much attention to things that could kill them.

I have never got a speeding ticket i didnt deserve.

I agree. I don't care if I am not very good at watchign my speed most of the time. School zones I am always aware and attentive of my speed, my surroundings and potential hazards.

THis also falls to to the parents responsiblity. I don't think it should go unsaid that this is ultimately the parents responsibility to take responsibility for raising their kids with the appropriate knowlege and good habits.

And yes, I have been hit by a car when I was a kid. I still believe that it was my fault, not my mom's (she raised me better, I knew what I was doing was wrong) and I also feel that the driver has 0 blame or responsiblity in that situation too. Doesn't matter how slow or who the driver was, they would have hit me based on what I did.

If you scream at me about how you pay my bills I will reach in my pocket and give you your nickel back.

KFinn just needs to slow down...

And a lot of cops will stop for 12 over just to check you out and run your name and give you a warning for your speed if everything else is good and write you for 15 or more over.

personally, I think you should refrain from screaming at least if you want to have any chance at all of getting a warning, I have found honest and polite is the best way.

Why? I don't speed,, The Blazer has all it's lights,, Can't think of a reason for them to pull me over till the end of April if I don't get the plates renewed..[Tooth]

And my last one was in a brand new car that I saw the man way up ahead...... Had the speedometer replaced the next day as it was 10mph off.

I did ASK for the ticket a couple of years ago that was not given by the new MP on post that had no clue how Colorado's tag system worked. tag said 08/08 and it was 09/02/08. He got his ass chewed later for that one. ;)

Shut up! [Tooth]

I have slowed down. Just seems that the rare times I find myself over, there is a cop there to see it. Where if you look 2 years go at my speed, it was far from a rare occurrence!

yep, I got pulled over in my fiances car...the guy went back, ran my license then comes on over the loud speaker asking if I have a weapon in the car...kinda stupid IMO.
I shook my head, he comes back up then lectures me how I need to tell him if I am a CCW (not true in CO). He just gave me a warning but had he given me a ticket I probably would have informed him he was wrong. the bad guys aren't going to tell the cops they have a gun in the car...what is the point of the good guys? other than a little piece of mind of the officers part I guess.

I don't like having it at the touch of the button for them...but oh well

Last one I got was in the fall of 96'...

State Patrol got me doing 91 in a 65 zone in my bright orange 79 Scout II. The judge yelled at me A LOT and I paid a big old friggin' fine. I deserved it and they got me fair and square, so I didn't bitch. Took 8 points off my license. Scared me straight though, I've been good since.

Your Scout must have the 345 in it, Lord knows I could have never gotten my 304 to do 91. Damn I sure miss that old Scout

Yep, 345 with an Edlebrock sitting on top of a spreadbore 4bbl manifold off of an old Loadstar. I've had three Scouts in my life, I miss all of them. I sold my 77' to a guy here on this board. I was sad to see it go, but it went to a good guy.

I spent some tax return money on a 42' IH Farmall model H the other day, so I'm feeling a little better.

2 years ago - rarely was I at or below the speed limit and rarely did I get caught. Yes.

No I am rarely speeding in excess of 4 or 5 mph but usually trying to keep it at mark.

* one can dispute the sensibility of a speeding ticket in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming though

A few years ago, I found myself on a road in Montana, Just after they had changed all the speed limit signs to "Reasonable and Prudent." All I could think of was "Damn, I wish I had the Camaro" Just wasn't the same in the Blazer...

KevDen....(question for you) How do you decide if you're going to light someone up for "Following to close behind?" That's my biggest peve about driving, I'm doing 68 in the right lane, and some buttsmeller wants to get so close my exhaust goes straight in his face. Times so close I can't even see their headlights. I'd love to see people pulled over for that. I saw 3 accidents in 48 hours on HWY 36 and all appeared to be for that reason.

No one should ever be tailgating in the right lane, ever. I'm much more likely to brake check someone who is tailgating me when I'm in the right or middle lane and can easily be passed.

I've gotten three I've deserved. I've gotten one I didn't, and that one still irritates me just because of how it happened. And I've gotten a warning on two occasions, one of which I believe I deserved a ticket.
I got hit as a kid too, but not in a school zone. I was riding my bike across a crosswalk and a lady ran the stop sign. She was nice enough and loaded me up and took me home, though.
I do agree, school zones are not the places to speed. If I'm careful anywhere, it's there. I also am very careful when I'm in residential neighborhoods, even more so when I see any kids running around. I've had 'em pop out from behind cars too many times not to be.

I got pulled over outside a little town called Lusk out in East Wyoming.
We took a little vacation to visit Mt. Rushmore and The Crazyhorse Monument.
Got clocked at 73 in a 65. The trooper spun around in his Charger and caught up quick.
He saw the Glock sticker on the rear window and asked about guns in the car. Of course I explained thats why it was there and Im glad it worked.(Need to find a AK DRACO sticker as well, had that slung behind the seat!!!!!)
He did the usual and went back to the Charger....you know the waiting is the hard part.
My drivers license is expired but good w/ a Mil ID card and my printout of car insurance EXPIRED the day before!! NO LIE.
My son was asleep under a blanket in the backseat with no buckle but did not move a bit and he never knew he was there!!
Well the trooper comes back and explains the laws of Wyoming regarding Drivers License and ask me if I like the Glocks. I told him I was more of a Springfield guy and he says he wishes he could afford one!!
He let me off with a warning............BUT MY WIFE DID NOT FOR THE WHOLE TRIP!!!![Rant1]
He thanked me for my service and we where on our way.
If you are ever in Lusk when you get to the T intersection to head North make a little turn to the right and head down the street to the Diner near the truck stop.Excellent food and really friendly service. Even gave the wife a rose for Mothersday.
Gas is a few cents cheaper at the truck stop to.
I sent him some Army stickers and a few Army souvenirs the following week to thank him for HIS service.

If you have not been to South Dakota to see these monuments it is a must!!!
We had a great time staying at the KOA camp ground cabins near Hill City!!

If anyone is planning on going anytime soon let me know and I can let you know what you can expect and what to see. Oh and eat lots of Buffalo when you can!!
Cheers, Rico

I get away with WAY too much. Last ticket was Aug '07. Every time I've driven my old Mustang further than 6 miles I've gone triple digits. Now with the Mustang's replacement I've most recently gone through Morrison PD's usual speed trap at 86 in a 45, just got a friendly wave. Last week the Troopers had a speed trap at 470 & Bowles, got the friendly wave for 15 over. Damn I love my P71 Crown Vic. Still miss the special service pursuit Mustang.

Hehe... Both my grandparents lived in Lusk till their deaths or old home move. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. Funny that some people know of it. Its definately out of the way and a hole in the wall.
