Does anyone here hunt snakes?I just bought 52 acres and wanted to see if someone would be intrested.TY.Would prefer a 22 over a 12 guge, but don't really care. When is the season for hunting them in CO?
I'll put my number on here when it gets closer to season,if you find any bull snakes where you live bring them on down

I would love to hunt some rattle snakes. It's just a long drive for me. If I'm ever down there i'll email you. [Beer]
I've never hunted rattle snakes, but I've got a shotgun. I'd love to walk around and shoot some snakes. Did you want their bodies as intact as possible so that you can tan the leather?

a real shotgun is overkill.. I use a .22 loaded with shotshell.. they're not that dangerous..
any handgun with shotshell ammo is plenty to take down rattlers..
you've also got to ask what the rattlers are eating, and address that, too... that's how I handled my rattler problem here in Penrose
Oh cool, I have some handguns then that I could get shotshell for.
I am in to hunt rattlesnakes, I typically hunt them out in kit carson, and damn are they good eating. I grew up in SC chasing copper heads, mocassins, and eastern diamond backs my whole life. The first year my father n law invited me to go dove hunting out at kit carson, the all the ole timer guys told me if I saw any rattle snakes get'em, and we'll eat them that night, Well it was about 100 degrees out, and with no ice I didn't want the meat to spoil during the corse of the day so good ol me from the south, rounded up 6 of them ranging from 18" -36" and brought them all back alive. Man those guys shit a brick when I dumped a 5 gallon bucket full of live rattlers, and with them being that warm, they acteed like they had just drank red bull. Man I laughed my ass off, I thought cowboys were suppose to be tough, they danced like a bunch of damn girls, when they got turned loose. I am now known as "the dumbass hillbilly from south cakilaki"

I have been known to hunt them in NE CO. I usually use a bow, but have been known to use my 308 for the flat lands. And what ever carry pistol I am using for the tall grass.

If you want to take them alive, poke a few small holes in a five gallon bucket lid use a pole or catcher thing (dont know what they are called) and put them in, you can use a large bag like a feed bag etc and put them in and tie it but I prefer the bucket. You can catch them by hand (I dont reccomend it), I know guys that do. I would kill them in the field then they should be safe to handle by the time you get home.
before my daughter was born I was a hands on type of guy, now its bucket, and my homemade golfclub/snake stick

Sounds fun to me I have been wanting to try that for a few years now. Wish that wasn't so far away. My buddies just think I'm crazy.
Check up around the North Shoot site.. I know a couple of years ago there was at least one..
He was kind of young also, So I would guess that there was at least 3...

If you just want to get rid of the rattle snakes, go catch a bunch of bullsnakes and turn them loose on your property. I guarantee your rattler problem will be solved. Bullsnakes will also take care of any mice and other small rodents.
The season is June 15-August 15 Daily limit 3 possession limit is 6, I'm not sure if rules change on private property but a simple call to the dow will answer all question (303)297-1192 .
I would also enjoy shooting a few snakes and dont mind driving let me know
if anyone is up for it and wants to take a newb rattlesnake hunter out i would love to go. i do lots of small game and big game as we as upland and waterfowl but never snakes. sounds like fun!

Hi Brokenscout..
Is that broken as in not running IHC Scout? Just curious..
I have 40 acres south east of Pueblo and 2009 was a bumpercrop year for prairie rattlers. You can do a forum search to see pics of a large one I shot back in October.
I use a 12 guage with #7 or #8 trap loads. These will atomize a rattler from 20 feet, or if you get a little closer, you can take one's head off pretty clean.
I hunt them as a safety measure as I have small children and dogs. Non venomous snakes are always welcome at my place for rodent control, but rattlers are shot on sight.
If you are interested, you are welcome to come out to my place to hunt them for their skins or meat or whatever. As long as you are a safe hunter and observe all proper firearms handling protocols, I would welcome the help. I shot six of them last year within 50 yards of the house.

Its true bullsnakes will out compete rattlers and even occasionally eat them, but at my place I have plenty of both. "Red racers" too. Biggest bull snakes I've ever seen in abundance around here. They crawl out onto the road to sun themselves in the spring and sadly, a lot of them get run over by cars. These red racers, which I had never seen before moving out to rural Pueblo county, are bright pink when they shed their skins for a day or two. Interesting creatures.
I have a seven footer on my wall.
And yes they are damn good table fair. Deep fried, smoked, broiled. even good on the grill.
.22 through the head doesn't mess up anything, except their day.

I'd go
I'd love to tag along with someone to learn the rattlesnake ropes and maybe get a skin, try some meat, etc. Let me know if anyone is going and wants company.

GreenScout, I'd LOVE to take you up on that offer. I would use a firearm as a backup to using a snake stick and machete.

Cool, I wouldn't mind inevitably taking a shot shell round of 9mm in the ass at some point in the day.
Ain't nothing like going to a rattlesnake roundup and looking at a pit full of snakes!

Wow, dumbest looking invention yet. How do you find these Stuart?
Only cool people get told about them. I turn around and tell you guys.
Going up to Pawnee Grasslands area tomorrow with my grandpa. Apparently there is at least one rattler up there right now. I'm bringing my shotgun with some 7 1/2 field loads in case I see him. Should I try and just get his head to save the body for anyone here who wants him? Or is one snake not enough to bother? I'm leaving tomorrow around 8:00am and live in Westminster if anyone near by wants me to bring the snake back for them. Should I bring a cooler or something?

I'll take a free rattle snake if you get one, they are tasty. I would highly recommend cutting the head all the way off and burying it before you bring it back.
Cool, will do. What is the reason why you do that?
Should I just pack a cooler and throw it on ice? I'll let you know by tomorrow. We don't take I-25 on the way back though. Can I meet up with you on Sunday if I bag one?

If you accidentally get an appendage near the mouth you can still get a venomous bite, even after they are dead. Just a good safety step.
Yep cooler with ice would work, and Sunday should be good for me.

True, often times for hours after they are dead the head can still "bite", plus accidental scratching on the fangs can get you a good hit of venom.
I'm a bit concerned here though. Praire rattler hunting doesn't officially start until 15Jun. From the DOW website: (http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/SeasonDatesAndFees/SmallGameDatesandFees.htm)
Prairie rattlesnake......Dates: Jun. 15 - Aug. 15, 2009 andJun. 15 - Aug. 15, 2010......Area: Statewide
.
I'm not going out to hunt a bunch, just the one that has been hanging out under the compressor they are working on. So, since there is a rattle snake on our property, and I'm going to go kill it, hunting season or not.
I AM interested in a rattle snake hunt when the time comes, but I don't think that there are enough on the property to bother. I'm just going to dispatch this one that we know of.
Here are some buzzworms that I killed last year in Siebert Colorado. There were about 100 or so in a den that I dug up with an excavator. The largest was about 4.5'.. I ambushed about 15 or so just the other day in Goodland kansas.

I never harm a snake except for rattlers. Hunt it down and kill it Stu, landowners are allowed to shoot problem snakes without license or permit needed. Blast away.....
Speaking of blasting away, there is a certain rooster killing coyote who has a date with my 870 tonight. I'm blasting that son of a bitch if I have to stay up all night to do it.....

Used to hunt them. Never used a gun. Fashioned a makeshift snake pole out of an old "sturdy" fishing pole. Used it to beat the bushes while I walked. Like cowboykjohnson said, the ones I killed, I would cut the head off and bury it. I did bring some home alive, and kept them alive for a spell. Finally ended up eating them too. They are pretty tasty. Still have at least one skin, and a few rattles.
Had a good THICK pair of leather leggings back then. Even knowing you have them on, it can get your adrenalin going, if one strikes your leg. I was walking through a clearing where I had been throwing them, after I had cut off and buried their head. Heard one rattle and felt him strike my leg. Got my heart to pumping. With NO head, his accuracy was still there.
Hmmmm.
I was going to wear shorts tomorrow. I don't really have anything to protect myself. Good thing I'm not hunting them. I'll have to be extra careful. I'm hoping we see him out in the open like usual so I won't have to dig him out of anywhere. I've come across a rattle snake before while hiking, didn't even have a stick then though.

Oh good heavens. I thought you were going to offer to show us something else.[ROFL1]
Well, didn't see ole Ralph the Rattler today. I did get to shot my .22 with the new sight Bert put on for me (I hit what I was aiming at, so that was good) and had Gloria shoot the shotgun for the first time. Over all it was a good day. I also got sun burnt very badly and got a video of my grandpa operating his 1943(ish) Quickway and using a power grinder running off a generator in the middle of no where.
Oh yeah, and there were some antelope out there as well. One of them was pretty big IMO. I think his horns had like 4-6 points. Pretty cool day.
