My friend said "Half of the police persons that were killed, were killed with their own gun!" I do not think this is right but need some statistics to counter. Where can I find some statistics on this???

Thanks

Did he mean killed by someone or suicide and accidents included?

I found 2005 Stats:
122 police killed in the line of duty
67 were accidental

6 were killed with their own weapon

50 were shot
55 were killed intentionally
5 were killed by vehicles
34 while wearing body armor
42 were killed by handguns
5 were killed by shotguns
3 were killed by rifles

If it is anything like most previous years, the statistics play out like:
#1 car accident
#2 accidental discharge with service weapon
#3 suicide with service weapon
#4 perp supplies own weapon (handgun)
#5 perp supplies own weapon (knife)
#6 perp supplies own weapon (long gun)
#7 perp grabs service weapon

Cops are rarely killed, but it is usually their service weapons or their patrol vehicles doing the killing when it happens. I imagine this is because these are dangerous elements that are present in every accident or attack than an officer is involved in.

The stats look right, but he might need the source of the stats too. I know I would want that in his shoes.[Beer]

According to this data, of the 41 LEOs feloniously killed in 2008, 35 were killed with a firearm, and of those, only 4 were killed with their own firearm.
