My grandpa purchased this at an estate sale 30 years ago, thinking it was just the case. It turned out the actual unit is inside in almost like new condition. Does anybody know anything about this piece and if it were to have any kind of value, or a better place to ask? He is looking at getting rid of it but has no clue on what value would even be.

This is all I have really been able to find on it.

US Navy has a tendency to declare any missing or lost property theirs once it has been salvaged. I'd keep it under your hat, personally.

May have been a DRMO sale

Doesnt matter. The Navy wrote off an F4F Wildcat that went down in Georgia....50 years later, someone digs it up, pulls it out and restores it. About 3 days after the restoration is finished, the Navy shows up and says it is their property and loads it onto a truck and drive off with it, without giving a penny to the guys who recovered and restored it.

It does matter if it was sold through the DRMO type sale.

Well we found out what the actual sight is. It is a sperry gyroscope co 40 mm gun sight. If you google this bulletin #2 is the exact manual included. Its pretty neat he has original user manual, installation manual and inspection certificate from 1945. All in almost perfect condition.

Its the device to Account for leading your target for anti aircraft mounted to the 40mm gunner.
